Now to drill pole pieces, hopefully without having to remove magnets....

Got so hot from drilling, that the top plate glue let go and it shifted on the other one....

Are you going to use the same glue / adhesive again?

MUCH easier to drill and chamfer without the pesky magnet attached. Think I'll go make a tweeter mag centering dowel...Now to find some new felt pads and lambs wool...

I used non-magnetic high impact brass for the removal and locating dowel and 7075 aluminum for the magnet removal base....
    Dowel ID.... 0.995
    Dowel OD..... 1.210
    Mag base ID..... 2.650
    Mag base OD....3.00"
Mag base length needs to be at least 2.00" in order to prevent the magnet from inadvertently pulling the pole piece back.

This mod is for TonyM. Fair warning, use a 45° max chamfering tool and don't go wider than 1.325" Total ID and ALL domes including the Wuhans will still seal/seat properly.

These are my testing frames/bezels for a few more mods I'll be doing. Heck, the new inset domes have better side clearance than the factory....

    Perfect! ;)

I didn't even think of using a chamfering tool / bit.

I wonder if my woodworking bits would work in my little drill press. Or should I just break out one of my routers or my router and table combo?

You've got my brain working again. B)

Maybe with a 45 degree router bit with a bearing attached...

I don't own or know of anybody with a milling machine or lathe BUT I do own a lot of router bits and routers... :p

Wuhan, wonder if they would be willing to spin off a few hundred with the same voice coil depth. Best I remember the voicemail itself was not as tall as the original.

Do you guys' SL2000s come with the paper spacers between faceplate and diaphragm?

I'm thinking of using 1mm thick PVA foam to ensure the backsides are truly seated and padded correctly.

The Wuhan domes sit rear of the faceplate, whereas factory set on the forward lip. Measuring mine, they engage the pole piece correctly.

I stopped by Wally World. Found the correct size felt pads, but no Lambs wool.
How close is Dacron to Lambs wool?

The higher the density, the better the sound absorption for a given thickness, and the lower frequencies will be absorbed better (so less of an issue here?). Anyway, the thicker the better, which is why in my Danish Peerless the wadding goes right up to the hole in the dome, I'm sure.

You technically don't want the felt ring touching the back-side of the dome correct? I'll have to machine a 7/16" hole punch so they end up like the ones modified in the How-to link.

And scratch the PVA foam as a backer. It causes too much gap between dome and bezel when 4 screws are snugged down.

I was listening to the Wuhans last night for awhile in my 5bs. One in plastic frame and one in the new billet frame with the new un-punched felts on pole-pieces and just the rear ports taped-off.... Upper mids cleaned up somewhat just from the new felts.

    I'm lost on Joe's clamp?

Here is one thread from 2010.

    https://forum.polkaudio.com/discussion/100092/joes-the-clamp/p1

The links to pictures are broken. Some people on the Forum have one. I seem to remember Toolfan66 made a few several years ago, and I remember "intellectual property" involved.

Anyone out there have a picture to post?

When I read that link it was not clear to me whether he kept the open cell foam *plug* in the pole vent and just added the wool ring or whether he got rid of the foam. The photos seem to indicate he got rid of it.

I would think that in tweeters without the pole piece vent mod, with only the hole in the dome (aperture tuning), that it would be ideal to shape the felt or wool with some fly tying scissors so that it is a dome shape but with some clearance. No touching, just like in the strip clubs lol.

PS - why can't the genius vanilla programmers fix all the links that they broke?

    These innernets get twisted...

I can't find your PM about the specialized copper used for binding posts now.

I think the Lambs wool in vent hole and stuffed in chamber would be best.

Oh that's the Tellurium Copper. Very machinable and has nearly the conductivity of Copper. I believe it is what Cardas uses.

Thought it was tellurium you mentioned.
It does not oxidize as easily or quickly as solid copper either.

I believe I have a couple ft. of it in 1" OD....
Will be perfect for the Eddy mods I'll be doing to these tweeters and some MWs...

One of the old Polk brochures you guys posted (mHardy perhaps) mentioned the early midwoofers' pole pieces were copper-plated to alleviate the Eddy currents. Some of the high end tweeters have the copper sleeves on their pole-pieces. I believe Polks new Legend Mids also have them.
One thing's for sure, this material machines out to a WAY better surface than the cast pole-pieces that leave the factory.

Hell yeah ! Glad you figured the felt deal out. Daddy was not much help. He has some dementia and did not remember much about even using felt. All he has was really old and way too small/ wrong size. The Shaff piano repair book was not much help either with the sizes they offered and shapes I am sure you could find it somewhere else much more suitable for less change.
