I have the much older BDP-83. Has anyone compared how this fares against the newer 105?

I believe the The 95 was the model before the 105 and the 83 was the model before the 103, I love my 105 darbe and think it's the best purchase I have made in quite some time. I can only imagine the 105 fairs better than the BDP 83, perhaps someone who has stepped up from the 83 to the 105 will chime in.

I went from the BDP-83 to the BDP-93 to the BDP-103, and each one was better than the earlier model. This is soley for video since I have other gear for music.

Good to know, thanks. My 83 is a bit long in the tooth and so I'm considering the 105 as my next player.

If you have the 83-SE then the 105 is a pretty big upgrade. If you have the regular 83 then the 105 is a massive upgrade, not even close.

    This^^^^^^

I have a 95 and 105 and neither one will be leaving me any time soon. "If ever" both have been purchases that I never regretted..

Does the DAC in 105 stand against stand alone DACs? Is it best for the money or does it really come neck to neck with mid priced stand alone DACs (1500$ to 2500$) did any of you guys did a back to back comparison?.

I am currently using the Asus Xonar Essence sound card for D/A conversion to feed my Cary SLP05 thinking whether to wait and a take a bigger leap or get the Oppo 105 for the time being (If it is a considerable improvement)

Hmmm DAC has been and will be most difficult purchase (at least for me) too many things at play...

You can get reasonably close to the DAC quality of the 105 for less money as Skip mentioned. However, you can't really get a much better sounding DAC in the price range of the 105. You'd have to drop quite a bit more coin on something like the Hugo to get a materially better sounding DAC.

The DAC doesn't have to be a difficult decision. It's pretty simple, if all you need is a DAC then the 105 is probably overkill. If you can use the features of the 105 then it's a great option. If you have $1200 to burn I'd still recommend the 105 even if you don't think you'll use those features now. What you're NOT going to find is another $1200 option or standalone DAC that sounds much better than the 105.

Eh, not so sure pal. Used...maybe, new...You may be right. Still, for what the 105 offers aside from the dac alone makes it a no brainer. OPPO hit the sweet spot with this one.

I was referring to new, apples to apples comparison price with the Oppo. The used market obviously brings in a bunch of options, some of which would sound better.

I use my 105 in my 2 channel rig, no I have not used it as a pre amp.. Where did anyone say it sounds as good as a $70 sony player or did I misunderstand the question?

Well!... A 70$ don't decode himself the signal but send it to a pre-amp (or receiver) to decode. Voila! if i'am you, I use this player as a pre-amp, because he sound as good as a krell, ANTHEM or similar (after my reading in another forum, like AVS)

OK, you use a JOLIDA in your system but you send the signal decoded by your oppo via RCA!... Why? The oppo have a lot of input imself and a volume control! You're JOLIDA is useless and is a parasite! He need to be out of this system by all means!

I think he's asking why you run analog IC's from the Oppo to the Pre?

What is IS he smoking? His posts don't make sense.

When people talk about the sound of the Oppo 105 they are referring to the analog section. This has been upgraded over the 103 to be better audio. Any sound from the HDMI is what the AVR produces.

...and frankly, we can see why.

You assertions make no sense. Pre amps differ in sound characteristics too, to suggest an Oppo is as good as a Krell or Anthem merely suggests you have zero experience with either.

Running the analog outputs in the OPPO lets you use the decoding and dac in the OPPO, obviously it's strong points. The pre amp section in the Oppo is going to be the weakest link.
