He was an occasional pot smoker, but not a problem one... He went to a party, got a little buzzed then took a dare to shoot this **** and nothing was the same afterwards. Last I knew he was still alive but has no clue what planet he's on or even what month it is. My mom was involved with following up on him and his case through Ramsey County Social Services. He has something like 15 kids to 13 different women and does not know the names of any of them. And as mentioned elsewhere in the thread, he was Native American/Cherokee.

Sounds like fertility clinics should start using heroin. I'm just kidding!

I want to share a story that someone told me, that I find hard to believe, so maybe someone here may know if this is true or not. I was talking to a girl and she told me she went to high school with a guy that was in jail for cooking meth. While in jail, he was given an opportunity for an early release if he agreed to enlist in the army. This was when we were short on troops and she told me that recruiters were going to prisons in search of people with non violent criminal records. Has anyone heard of this? I just find this hard to believe, I think of the military as being the best of the best.

You never heard of "join the Marine Corps or go to jail?
That used to be pretty common back in the 70's.
Knew a number of guys given that line in court for smaller offenses.
    As Springsteen put it

I was born in the U.S.A.
    Born in the U.S.A.
Got in a little hometown jam so they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land to go and kill the yellow man

As far as recruiting people in jail. I doubt that ever happened.
That's a whole other thing. I doubt a meth-cooker is going to get
    into the service.

That last verse really stinks. I don't think Springsteen's final released version of that song had it in there. You must have an earlier, unreleased cut - might be worth some big buck$!

    Sure it's in there.
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

Mods.... If you see this, the first word in this post should be amended to "He" instead of "I". I am proudly one of the few that has never touched illegal drugs of any kind.

Well, from what I read and hear the military has changed some from when I was in (69-73) since it is now voluntary, and no draft. However, then, at least in the Navy, it was fairly representative of society; some really sharp, some really clueless, and most just ordinary. I doubt if it is much different now.

You are probably right. My hope is that they at least leave the military a better person than when they entered. They'll always have my respect for what they do. A lot of restaurants give free meals to veterans on Veterans Day, I think they should get a free meal every day.

The Marines make big changes in recruits. Those guys that went there
instead of jail either changed big time or went down in flames.
Coin flip on a lot of them. What modern footage I've seen of them in action in
Afghanistan or Iraq makes me proud.
So many can't get a decent job and fall into drug and alcohol abuse.
30 years ago, that wouldn't of been the case. I know the place I worked
after getting out actively sought out and hired servicemen.
    Now it's pretty rare.

    Oh my!!!

Remove head from butt hole and see the light.

The military, pot or our way of life has nothing to do with Seymour killing himself. For what ever reason he decided to kill himself.

It was a decision he made no one else.

    PERIOD

I'm going to repeat this because it seems many of you, especially mudboy, still don't understand. You're all looking at this as a physical thing, it's not. The use of drugs, alcohol, gambling, etc. are MEAR SYMPTOMS of the disease of addition. It is an insidious mental disease just like any other mental disease.

Someone that has stopped using or gambling still suffers from the disease. One is never fully cured, but one can learn to cope with it and lead a "normal, productive life."

28 years here and at the start, in no small part to the 12 step programs. I also know a helluva lot of folks that used it and made it because, and this is key, they knew something was wrong and wanted to change. The programs give one the foundation and tools required to bring that change about.
Congrats Jesse. I've had my own battles with benzodiazepines, due to panic attacks and generalized anxiety disorder since my teens. Regarding 12 step programs, one of my oldest and dearest friends has been sober over 25 years, and he works the program every day. He is an inspiration to me, and through him I met many who live and work the 12 step program. It's not for everyone, especially those who are atheists, or agnostic. There are secular programs that are effective as well. The main thing is the desire to quit. You're not going to quit because of a court order or a promise to a loved one. It has to come from your own head.

Addiction is a mean mo fo monkey on your back. OK, more like King Kong on your back. As has already been said you and only you can make the choice to quit. You also have to find another addiction to take its place. I see I am not the only one who has chosen audio.

As for Phillip Seymour Hoffman I was shocked to see we shared more than the same last name, he was also the same age as me. It is sad that he looked more like 66 than 46. Most people put me at late 20's to early 30's.
