He didn't look very good in that picture and only 46 years old. Unless that's from a movie and he was meant to look that old.

I dunno man. When you take the common man/woman who gets up every day and goes to a job they may or may not like 50 hours a week, who has to worry about losing that job, losing their HC coverage, losing their house, car repairs, schools, spending time with the kids, grocery shopping, never taking vacations, saving for retirement, dealing with their take home pay shrinking and costs of everything rising.....

I'd say yeah....these people have the world by the balls when you remove all those worries.

Sounds like he got a bad batch of heroin. Every now and then reports come in of heroin being mixed with other, more potent opioids. A casualty of the drug war IMO.

    RIP. Great actor.

Yes. One of the biggest problems with buying an illegal substance on the black market is you never know what you are really getting. Buyer beware.

After finally kicking the cigarette habit, I have no desire to try anything addictive again. However, maybe 10 years or so ago I had a knee operation that ended up being a bone transplant from one side of the knee to the other. When I woke up in the recovery section I mentioned that it really hurt, so they gave me some morphine. After a bit, I said it still hurts, and they gave me more morphine. At that point I was feeling pretty good, and thought no wonder people get addicted to this stuff.

Everyone's always looking for excuses. Just stop doing it.

I was "addicted" to caffeine and drank too many sodas every day. I thought it was not good for me, so I stopped. Now, I am not comparing drugs to soda, but what I am saying is these "addicts" tend to find whatever excuse they need to keep doing what they are doing without thinking of the consequences. In this case 3 young children losing a father. For what?

Obviously it is not easy, but JUST STOP.

We could fill another 20 pages on addiction. Funny how the 3 most addictive substances are legal and society has a hard enough time coping with that. Booze, tobacco, Sugar. I would think 75% of the entire population, if not more is addicted to one of those 3.

I feel for the guys family, but not him. He certainly had the means to get better if he wanted to and certainly had the support system around him.

Sure you felt good...like heaven...at first...trouble is after a while you are no longer doing it to feel good anymore...you need it just to feel normal...that is when you have that monkey on your back...getting to that euphoric state requires heavier doses..untill the body can't tolerate any longer....then you're gone!

He was one of my favorites - what a shame. Saw a piece on one of the news shows that indicated some heroin is now being mixed with fentanyl, which is on the order of 100 times more portent that morphine. Wonder if that's what he injected.

+1. The success rate of cold turkey success for opioid addicts is approximately zero. Even the long term success defined as 100% abstinence with medication assisted therapy is shockingly low.

Opioid addicts are more or less addicts for life and just happen to be in remission when they're not using. The FDA has been **** this up with new therapies, too. They considered a _reduction_ in opioid use as insufficient efficacy since very few subjects are able to get completely clean.

Addicts do what they do. If something doesn't happen, they continue to self destruct.
The difference is these guys have the means to keep going far past the breaking
point. Treatment only works if they are in the mental state of "enough is enough".
other than that, they keep going down the path. Booze, smoking, drugs, makes no difference.
The progression is the same. And there is no going back, or moderation. Once you're
there, there is no moderation option. It's stop or nothing.

Sorry, I never bought in to that and never will. The needles don't magically float in to your arm. You make a conscious decision and effort to buy, prep and use. The alcohol does not just appear in your mouth and down your throat. Cigarettes do not jump out of the box and land between your lips. Whatever the addiction is, you are the one making the choice to continue. Don't. Plain and simple.

People get angry when the "addiction" word is challenged. I just think it is a crutch people depend on, almost enabling whatever habit they have.

I am fully aware things such as alcoholism are technically classified as a disease, but it is a disease in which you have direct control of.

    Again, nothing personal.

Agreed. you just don't walk away from Heroin, etc. By the time you're hooked your ever increasing needs trap you in a vicious circle.

On another note. This has been a horrible weekend. I lost one of my closest relatives in the Old Country. Took me completely by surprise as I saw him in July and he looked OK. All this death and dying, and so much more ahead for all of us!

    RIP.

Does food jump into your stomach? Does air jump into your lungs?

A heroin addict doesn't "choose" to hurt himself and everyone around him. Will power only lasts so long with this disease. If you don't understand, you don't understand. And that's fine...

I wouldn't claim to be an authority on the subject either. But, I studied it in college quite a bit and spent some time in a 12-step meeting room or two for a project I worked on. Heroin is a 300 lb gorilla on one's back with a syringe in one hand and a loaded gun in the other.

No, they do not. I consume food because I need it to live. I breathe air because I need it to live.

If I use drugs or alcohol (to excess), that is a choice, not a need. Choose not to.
