First stage of the latest rack I am building...
    Legs from ambrosia maple:
    149381_10200480792371405_1385073469_n.jpg

After seeing the leg stock, I have decided on a slab of zebrawood for the shelves. The legs will be pinned using walnut dowels.

I use these VTI racks that I bought from racksandstands.com

I bought three racks and configured them into two taller ones. They are 24" W x 20" D, but I rotated them 90 degrees to fit. They are very sturdy and versatile. You can configure them anyway you want.
    Main System:
    Proton AA-1150 ~ Yamaha C-4 ~ Furman Elite-15 DMi ~ Sennheiser HD600 ~ Monitor Audio Silver RS8 & FB210 ~ Martin Logan Dynamo ~ Teac R-919X ~ Marantz CD5003 ~ Squeezebox Classic ~ Music Hall dac25.2 ~ Dual 1229/Acutex M312 III STR ~ Music Hall mmf-5.1/Goldring 1012GX ~ Music Hall Cruise Control 2.0

    Home Theater:
    Vizio V585-H11 ~ Yamaha RX-V800 ~ Furman Elite-15 DMi ~ Marantz DV6001 ~ EPI M90 ~ Polk Audio RT35i ~ CS400i ~ (2) Polk Audio PSW450

VTI's modularity was the basis of the stand I am currently building. I will start with one tall stand but shelves 3 and 4 will be removeable like yours are.

Google flexy rack. It doesn't get more customizable than DIY

Beautiful ZLTFUL, curious how you're going to make that like a VTI. Any stability problems with that tall VTI Carl? Great link Enders, very nice, kinda like a Sampson rack.

    Step 2...
    Zebrawood shelves

    603047_10200488314399451_395158627_n.jpg

So the plan is, similar in design to the Timbernation basic stands but with the modularity of the VTI. Basically, shelf 1 and 2 will be a single self contained unit.
Shelves 3 and up will be individual shelves with their own sets of isolation cones and divots in the tops of the legs below for those to rest in.
Each shelf unit should be in the neighborhood of 25-30 lbs.

The legs will be double screwed with "dummy" walnut dowels covering the screws to make it look like the whol thing is pinned. Glue will be used to reinforce the stability of each unit but with 2 very hard and dense woods making up the legs and shelves, the sheer volume should maintain stability just fine.

Excellent, I love zebrawood but I've never worked with it. That should be very nice with the isolation cones.

    Audio rack step 3:

Cut up wood into shapes that fit together and could hole audio gear...

    14978_10200580724829654_937788518_n.jpg

Got everything roughed together and seems like it will all play nice.

Just need my other 2 sets of isolation cones to show up and I am set to finish sand, assemble and then try and figure out what kind of finish I want to go with.

Right now, clear lacquer or tung oil are the front runners.

How did you attach the shelves, dados and glue or are they screwed together and glued? Looking great!

I like the "Flexi-Rack" design. Simple, easy to construct; adjustable, sturdy, and scalable/configuable. The shelves on this one are Baltic birch plywood, with an extra (and not necessarily required) reinforcement underneath.

avec and sans flash (sorry the photos aren't better and the temporary collection of gear thereupon isn't more neatly configured!)

The only other racks I have are decidedly "old school"...

Dados, glued, screwed. The screws will be recessed with half inch walnut dowels hiding the heads. The dowels will be flush cut and sanded smooth. They aren't attached yet but that is the plan.

I am sort of thinking about changing my original plan.
Originally, I was planning on this base and then stacking 2 single shelf units on top.
But the more I look at the first shelf set picture, the more I want to make 2 more just like it and then use 2 as a base, then the third bridging those 2. Then have a single DSW Micropro1000 in the gap underneath for my 2 channel system.

That's one of the problems is with building something from the confines of yer brain...the plans change. Hehe.

Yea Mhardy, I like that flexirack design as well, the Sampson racks use solid 11/4" rails, what thickness are the one's you show in the photos?
