i had a Sansui G2200 or 2000 & i had it paired with some Monitor 5's with Peerless tweets & it was so sweet. I sure miss that little system. Things we do in this hobby

I finally broke down, got a couple of cheap generic NAB adaptors off eBAY and pulled my half-track, high-speed A77 (which rose from the ashes of a total of three A77 organ donors!) out of hiding.

As I type this, I am listening to a rather fascinating rock artifact -- an aircheck of an early 1971 (apparently) interview with Bob Weir of the Dead -- conducted by some guys from Harvard's WHRB-FM in, of course, Cambridge ("our fair city"), MA.

The interview was recorded in New York in early 1971 -- it's interesting to hear Weir (and some snippets of others as well) when they were young -- pretty much unedited.

Ok. So its a cheesy Technics SU Z1 integraded amp & its hooked to R/Shack little metal box speakers. So **** what ya say. Ozzy sounds pretty good on it. Hellraiser

I would call a piece like that Technics small but sincere; what's not to like about it!? I mean, it's got meters and everything... looks fine to me.

Classic Technics Gear 1983 the SUV 909 euro model was the biggest Integrated Technics ever made correct me if I'm wrong its got to weigh at least 40lbs I know it ran 2 pair of my buddies 901s without breaking a sweat we had the barracks shaking that weekend it runs a pair of AR 58s and a pair of AR 18s no problem at all. The rest of the Technics gear is good stuff made before the late 80s crap they started putting out for the mainstream.

The only newbie to the group is the Cambridge Tuner my Technics tuner is somewhere just not sure it will show up under the steps I think. If I wasn't so lazy I would pop the top on the integrated will do someday and post a picture of the innards, its was serviced last year and is in tip top shape.

All of the AR-18 family are OK in my book; I am personally most favorably disposed to the original AR-18 of ca. 1977... but they were all good little loudspeakers.

I agree the 18's 28's the 38's and the 58's were all decent in their heyday, I almost bought a pair of 28's off craigslist to add to the collection but they were pretty beat up and smelt like smoke.

I picked up a pair of AR-28's that needed new foam for $5. Re-foamed the woofers and was overall very disappointed with their sound. Sold them for what I had in them.

Seems like all__ of those old AR's needed refoaming after decades of service, very__ fine sounding speakers(at least the ones from the late 60's to mid 70's) as I recall. Seems like the company went through some changes in the late 70's ,ended up m&a with Teledyne? Wasn't there another brand Superscope that m&a with Marantz about the same time?

Teledyne bought AR in (EDIT) 1967. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acoustic_Research
1968. Many fine AR products (mostly loudspeakers) were designed, produced, and sold while the company was "Teledyne Acoustic Research". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acoustic_Research

Superscope bought and bailed out Marantz in (EDIT) 1964. Poor Saul Marantz couldn't make a go of the hifi business despite his superb designers/engineers and the components they begat (e.g., the 8B amplifier). It is said that the low profit margin and high support (e.g., warranty service) costs associated with the Marantz 10 and subsequent 10B tuners were the straw that broke the camel's back.
Post-Superscope Marantz products, by and large, are hardly a shadow of the real Marantz components.

SQ just didn't do for me. My 2 favs are far as vintage bookshelves speakers were Polk Monitor 7 and Boston Acoustics A70. Sold both to make room for diff. stuff. If I kept everything I'd need a warehouse LOL.

Neat-o. Superscope also distributed Sony's products for quite a while -- some "Superscope" branded equipment was Sony-made, some Marantz made (in Japan -- I think Automatic Radio was the OEM... but don't quote me on that!).

I remember those receivers and I'd love to find one. As far as the lighted panel. Was it the bulbs or paper like the blue in the Marantz receiver that made it that color ??

I don't know; I doubt that the bulbs were tinted pink, though.
I don't think there's a single Superscope-branded piece here... I don't... think...

I had receiver (which brand, I don't remember) that had tinted bulbs. I replaced them with non-colored bulbs. Just wasn't the same.

Oh -- KA-3500; d'oh! I was thinking "KT-5300" (the companion tuner for the KA-3500).

The KA-3500 was next to the bottom of the line at the time (ca. 1977) and pretty inexpensive for a 40 wpc amp in its day. I don't recall them sounding subdued... but I haven't seen nor heard one for a long time...


The best sounding tuner I've ever heard with my own personal ears (in case anyone is interested) was an HH Scott 310E owned by one of the Northern New England vacuum tube hifi gurus. It was astounding.

I stumbled across photos of the two ReVox A77s I bought, years ago, on CL that ultimately gave their lives (along with a third organ donor A77) to beget the nice high-speed, half-track A77 that is now ensconced in my hifi room...
