Now, anyone here have one of the previous generation of top-end Pioneer 'prosumer' decks? E.g., an RT-1022?
I do not (although I wouldn't mind havin' one...) :-(

That TASCAM (to which, I presume, you refer) is a nice deck -- more of a 'prosumer' deck than the Pioneer; a bit beefier.
In terms of meters... ever see one of the previous generation of "good" Pioneer reel to reel decks...?

(not the best quality scan but it'll give you an idea of the best Pioneers of a couple of years before the 701/707/901/909) -
Thats totally insane. Thats ^^^^ awesome. My wife would shot me..

Since we're on a tape deck appendix today ;-)
Here's one that passed through the ol' homestead for a while some years back. I gave it to a fellow hifi nut who lives in VT... very pretty but in need for full rehab (not something I was up for at the time).

Here's my 1976 Sony TA-8650 V-FET Integrated amplifier. Delivers 80 watts per channel @ 0.1% THD both channels driven... The amp weighs a substantial 50 lbs. V-FETs were known for their tube-like sound and from what I understand, Sony did not make any money on these units.
I had it overhauled by Glen McDonald (Echowars) of Audiokarma when I got it. Shipping it to/from Hawaii was expensive, about $500 round trip via 2nd Day air, plus a few hundred for repairs as it was not working properly when I picked it up. The common issue with the V-FET amps were that the diodes would go bad so I had them replaced, also he replaced all the thermal pads for the transistors with thermal paste, replaced some other bad components as well as resoldered some cold joints. The only thing I hate about the amp is the terrible speaker connectors.

That ^^^^ is one beautiful Sony. When i opened the pic up-i said ''OH'' id be like one of those guys in pic looking that over n saying ''OH MY'' ... Ya dont see too many Sony's like that..
-
I don't think I've ever heard one of the V-FET Sony amplifiers... I'd love to have the opportunity, sometime. They're certainly not common.
EDIT: Man -- dat ding was built like a cast aluminum outhouse, man! :-) (and I do mean that in a good way!)
I think that your estimate of the era of that TEAC (A-1500U) is about right, Randy.
EDIT: heh, found it (well, the next model down, the A-1200U) in the 1971 "Allied Radio Shack" catalog*

Here's some pics of a Pioneer SX-780 I rescued at a garage sale for $5. Good think I didn't turn it on until I opened it up - I wonder if it would have started on fire from all the dust in there!
Note the 3rd 'clean' pic is not mine - from the web. I can't find a clean pic of my personal 780 for some reason, though I insist it looked mint!
It worked perfectly (and sounded great) after a cleaning. I traded it for a set of refoamed Boston A100s.HT System:

holy cow, looks like they forgot to clean the lint trap! :-O
Time to call one of those ductwork cleaning/remediation services for that clean-up job! ;-) -
Geez, that looks dangerous,(before the cleaning, lol) great find and trade! Boston Acoustics makes some nice equipment.

The irony of my TA-8650 has gone full circle... I bought a TA-8650 in 1976 and used it with a pair of Magnepan I or IIs... Can't remember which model exactly. I loved the system but the speakers had no bass. Subwoofers back then were non-existent. I am now using my current TA-8650 with a pair of Magnepan 1.6QRs and a Polk MM1240 subwoofer...
The photo shows a Polk RT55i with the MM1240 subwoofer when I took the picture. The Magnepans replaced the Polks.
On a sidenote, I am currently building a dual driver MM1240 subwoofer. The box alone weighs about a 100 lbs with nothing installed. I will post info when it is completed. -
My Sony STR-7045. Maybe I posted this before? Anyways, I had this for a while and liked it. Really smooth sound. I had an STR-7065 before that I thought sounded sharper, but had a bad cap along the way somewhere and developed a hum. The 7045 was pure buttah, and nice to look at.HT System:

I think that on this unit the volume started at 12:00. But I also do remember that it would get louder much more progressively than some receivers - where you're already at high levels in a few degrees of travel...Polkie2009 wrote: »Gorgeous Sony! After almost 33 years of marriage, the wife and I long ago came to an understanding where I don't need to sneak gear past her. Same here, my wife's no help. She says "Bill" go ahead and buy it. What I need sometimes is the voice of reason.
I don't need any help being irresponsible. I've been able to do that alone for a long long time now. LOL

You'd think a guy could get a break from his wife considering that it was just his B-day?
I've really slowed my buying down. Have enough vintage stuff around to rotate things in and out for days! lol And my wife just thinks it's a "useless" and "unbelievably unproductive" hobby! lol
I can't quite understand the obsession with old R-2-Rs. They seem a pain to repair and the only people who would use them are vinyl guys who want to do a "mix" tape of favorites so that they don't have to play a dozen LPs but still have good audio quality. At least that's what we used them for when I was in H.S. Of course they look totally "cool" and "retro". And if you have one that will do 15 ips speed and can find a "Master Studio" tape, well then you DO have something. But those are few and far between!
A Sony noise noise reduction adapter? Really? What a strange little thing! Didn't even know those existed.
Enjoy!
