New horn speakers are in!

Building a GM70 amp is a scary proposition. One of the local gurus is building/has built one - he knows how to deal with the lethal voltages (and currents) involved - HV high enough that regular old hookup wire isn't adequate, nor are regular old resistors. Stuff like that just makes me edgy.
-
It's a lot of voltage to throw around, that's for sure. I would never consider building one myself, but well designed ones can be very safe.

... but well designed ones can be very safe.

805 tubes scare me the most as they have the same high voltages, but a top plate cap which exposes the element.
It is pretty awesome to see almost 100w PP out of two tubes though... -
Probably a good idea to use a dedicated 20 amp line for those GM70 amps lol. Wonder if they'll trip the breaker on a standard line that's shared with other components?
-
I've read those monos are $5k which is a great deal. For about $1k, that same company make an SE EL34 (or 6L6) integrated with external power supply. Uses 6N1P input tubes and looks like a nice little amp.

Zingo this little 12W gem is what Russman used on the LSiM 705 at LSAF
It beat out Raven Audio's integrated 35w in a late night shoot out by a mile

Jake,
Pretty neat. I'm not sure why they decided to go with the 6N1P driver tube though. There is only one type from Russia. So no tube rolling for the driver. -

It may accept a 6922/ECC88/6DJ8/6N23P as those variants use a lower heater current than the 6N1P, but who knows. As far as 6N1Ps go, I probably have about 5 quad of them currently in my garage, so plenty of tube rolling with various years and factories.
-
Really? I had no idea they were produced by different factories. I've always thought there was only one. That's good news.
Some units that use 6N1P will kill the 6922/6DJ8 rather quickly like BAT. But some are more friendly.
That Minute gear looks awesome. Must be pretty quiet with that external power supply. You have so many amps to choose from. Which one are you thinking of so far? -

Sorry for misleading you, I have 7 quads of them. Date ranges from '64-'92, Voskhod, Orzep, and Nevz plants, some with EV designation or CCCP stamps, chrome and steel pins, different plate configurations and colors, different glass, and different getters. Now, these changes aren't going to sound as dramatic as rolling Chinese verses Russian 12AX7s, but it does provide a lot of variety and options. Every tube pictured belongs to a quad, and all tubes are different in some way to allow hours of rolling pleasure.
And if you are interested in the the Russian 6N23P (the electrical brother of the 6922), don't even get my started...

I'n heavily considering the Minute amp as it has a headphone circuit as well, but I have a few questions out to the company on a few details. I believe retail is $850, and head-fi has some great reviews on it. -
Sounds good. The headphone circuit is also a plus if you're into cans. $850 retail is not bad. Price would probably be much higher if they were made outside of Thailand.
Ha ha, that's awesome. Looks like you have a lifetime supply of those 6N1P. In the right circuit, the Russian military tubes usually have very long life as well. Thanks for sharing the pics.
lol about the 6N23P. I still have mine from Russman. One of my favorite box too! The other side of the box say USSR.

Thought I'd add this to your list. If you want to get very intimate with some nice vocals, this is a great amp (as well as other stuff I've tried from ASL). It's only 3.2w/ch but it's a DHT tube. Also accepts 45 tubes.
I had the previous generation of the Tulip and sold it when I was short on cash. I'm thinking about trying this new version.
The only hard part is getting the right robust pre amp to go with it. Or a source with a buffer if you want to use a passive pre because the Tulip has input transformers as well. Pretty cool.
This pic is taken from their site. More info... http://divertech.com/asltulip.html

Those are too funny. I have some very nice quads of 6N23Ps; one being early 80's, chrome pins, thick glass, EV and CCCP designation. Interestingly, their structure is VERY similar to the new Gold Lion 6922s, and they are some of the heaviest tubes of their size I've seen; I got them from Germany and never seen the same ones anywhere else.
-
Interesting. Now I know it's not just in my head. I noticed that some Russian tubes (NOS and current production) have very thick glass. I wonder how they compare to the Gold Lion.
Sounds like you have some rare 6N23P's. -
I think those 6N23P-EV do sound the same as the Gold Lion 6922s, but are very rare and about the same price. I'll snap some pictures...

Why is not this a stickey yet?
Love it guys -
Also got an email today from the guys at Soniphase about a some new, custom woofers they have designed for their bass horns. I'll be calling them tomorrow and test out a pair in my corner horns. He thinks they will be an upgrade from my current woofers, and who's going to argue with the designer? I'm sure my ears can help me decide...
-
wow, that is cool... speaker guys sending you free custom woofers...

Well, they won't be free, but I'll probably have the woofers before full implementation in their speaker lines. I'll snap some pictures when I get them. -
Sweet! I just love it when I see those older Russian military tubes and see CCCP or USSR stamped on them. Thanks for sharing the pic.
Interesting about the woofers. Are they letting you keep them? -
Picking up the woofers this morning. If I like them, he ask that I pay what they cost him; more than fair.
-
Woofers are a custom build for a sealed back chamber bass horn. They only have a few hours of tests on them from Soniphase, so I'm excited to break them in and hear how they might be an improvement.
-
looks like a champ....
wonder how much their cost is? -
I don't think they will be selling the woofers individually; probably just in their speakers and as replacements for current models.
-
Well get to crankin' Jake
Enquiring minds want to know
Cheers
