Just found this SE integrated amp that looks interesting: TK2A3/50S-I-REF by Tektron
It uses two 6SN7 for the input and one 5Z3 to rectify, but the key is the amp can use a pair of 2A3 OR 45 OR 50 OR 300B because it has a multi-tap selectable filament voltage knob. 6 Moons gave it a good review, and it looks like a tube rollers DHT dream!

... or build Gary Kaufman's "Ragtop" convertible (45/46/300B) amp. I can vouch for this one...

Is that yours? Looks very interesting. DHT triodes is whole different world.

-
Also eyeing the Transcendent Sound Single-Ended OTL amp. Similar power ball park of the 45 at 1.5wpc, but a totally different amp, and seems to be priced reasonably.
-
That particular, profoundly flea-powered OTL is just wicked tempting, isn't it? :-)
-
that's a nice looking amp
-
It is great looking, I just wish I could get my ears on one as I hate unknowns in my stereo.
-
Very cool amp. I'd love to hear an OTL design day.
-
Madmax told me that the SE OTL sounds very detailed, and very neutral; not the usual midrange bloom and such that most people are used to with SE(T) amps. With my speakers sounded very detailed, but not warm to begin with, I think I'm going to try a DHT SET amp with them first, then decide whether the SE OTL amp is worth the risk.
-
Thanks Zingo. That's kind of what I thought OTL's would sound like.
DHT is going to sound fantastic on your speakers. Only hard part would be deciding which triode tube to go with:cheesygrin:. Jazz with female vocals on DHT SET is to die for. Keep us posted on what route you decide to go on. -
-
It's a build from one of the guys at the audio shop I go to. They do custom builds and repairs as well.
I get 5w/ch with the 34's strapped in triode. Input tube is 6SN7 and the rectifier is a 5U4G. I like this amp as much as my 300B amp and a 2A3 I used to own. The EL34 is a completely different animal in triode.
-
Wow, that is a great looking amp! I'd love to hear a well done SE EL34 amp like that. There are a few cheap ones on ebay from China, but it's always a gamble and I'm not sure how good $300 in amp can sound.
-
Thanks. I really like the sound of this amp. It has many sound characteristics that makes it sound close to DHT's.
As for the Chinese gear on ebay, some are great sounding. But yeah, it's always a gamble unless you know what brands to look for.
But I think the most bang for your $ would be to have one built by a good tube tech. If you spend about $1k on a good build, the end product can usually compete against $2.5-3k retail of the big brand name company.
Are you still planning to get your next amp built by the local guy? You're at a very interesting and exciting phase in your home system. Finding that right amp to get your preferred tonal balance:). -
I found a few links on the local amp builder, but the reviews weren't good on customer service or build quality. Glad I found out that info now.
Any ideas on where to source a good SE EL34 amp? -

If I were amp shopping for a SE EL34 triode connected, I would probably take a look at the offering from Decware... http://www.decware.com/newsite/SE34I.htm I've never heard Steve's stuff but he does have a solid reputation and offers a 30 day money back guarantee.
The amp on your link does look interesting. The thing to keep in mind however, when an amp is capable of taking multiple types of tubes like EL34 and KT88, they are sometimes optimized for only one type or none of them at all. The up side is that you can do more tube rolling. But it will probably leave you thinking if you're getting the most from the tubes you're running.
Since you have an interest in single ended, you may find these articles interesting....

And of course, Steve's articles: http://www.decware.com/newsite/articles.html -
That Decware SE EL34 amp looks great, and just what I'd be looking in that type of amplification. I shot Steve an email, so we'll chat about the options. I'd looked at their amps, but some how missed that one. If I'm getting a second amp, I really like the idea that it uses the same tubes that my current amp already uses.

Sounds great. Let us know how it goes. That amp is beautiful.

Sounds great. Let us know how it goes. That amp is beautiful."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche

I kind of agree. It could look good, but seeing it in person would probably look different than the picture.

Anyone compared single ended to single ended parallel? I know they are very similar circuits, but just wondering how the extra tube and extra power changes the SE sound?
-
They look great on that pic. That's how I like my flea power amps. Simple.
I've never tried parallel single ended. I only see it as something to look into if using a low powered SET does not provide sufficient power, and you don't want to go push pull.
If I needed more power, personally I'd stick to single ended but would look at the more high powered tubes. The 6C3CC in single ended sounds like a SET amp on steroids (but without the delicacy and organic quality of a real DHT SET) http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue24/almarro_318B.htm. I had a pair of mono blocks using them. Very powerful sound. The tube basically has 2 plates connected together and two heaters.
Attachment not found. -
Those 6C33C are cool tubes, but never heard them. I did own an 845 SET amp for a while, but sold it before I got my new speakers. I'd be interest in something similar again, but GM70 tubes are so much cheaper. However, GM70 amps seem to be few and far between, and expensive at that.

SE 211 is a nice place to be...
Scroll down the page a bit at the link below to see photos taken back in 2003 of Gary Kaufman's SE211 amp; it has been his daily driver ever since and it is just superb on Altec A-5s equipped with 1505 horns, 288 drivers, and Hiraga XOs. Just superb.

Wow! Those GM70's looks serious. Very nice bright glow too.
The 211 Mrh suggested is interesting. You can get up to 30w in single ended:eek:.
The 6C33C is probably the most neutral sounding power tube I've used. But it gives you a lot of dynamics, clarity and slam. Those are the exact same tubes from the military that the Russian Migs used.
Isn't shopping for a new amp exciting? So many tubes to try and an endless amount of amplifier designs to choose from. -
