First off I am going to come out and say that I have never used expensive cable.
After reading through most of this post, it seems maybe we arguing the wrong point. It seems to me that the point that should be argued is if spending 1k on speaker cables is a smart investment in you particular system. If I had 1k to spend on my sound system, i would like to think that more of a difference would be gained by purchasing a better amp or better quality speakers, or even improving the acoustics of a room. I would have to imagine that the quality gained from that kind of upgrade would be more noticeable.
Being the average joe that I am. I could not afford 1k in cable even if it made a world of difference. I have spent the last 4 or 5 years building my system quality level up to what i belive my rtiA5's deserve.
Those of you that have so much invested in you setup that high end cables are your weak link, then more power to you. As for me I will enjoy what I have and dream of a time when my setup is worth using 1k cables

Looking forward to trying a different speaker wire. Will there be a difference? Maybe. But that all depends on what my EARS hear. That's the only audience that needs to pass judgement. Cables should be the last thing to be implemented. I cheated however. But who cares?

    Just my opinion of course...

I've seen good cables go for very reasonable prices in the flea market.
I'd never buy a $1k cable, but $150 for a pair of Kimber 8tc speaker
cables is very affordable. This is the point we make. When's it time,
give it a try. Don't like it? That pair of Kimbers is going to resell in less than a day.

Good thinking on your part. If you do have an extra $1k laying around & want to improve your system, the best allocation of those funds would be in adding room treatments. The only thing gained by adding $1k of cabling would be a lighter wallet. It all starts with the room.

Phil brings up a good point, the room. Another saying we have around here is that "everything matters". Then again, like I said before, we all play on different levels in this hobby, we all enjoy music in our own way.
A thousand buck cable isn't going to magically transform your Monitor 70's into B&W 800d's. You may hear people proclaim as they move up in speakers and/or gear, "I heard things on that cd I never heard before ". As your gear gets better, it becomes more revealing, you'll hear smaller nuances in the music. This is where better cables come into play, as the smaller changes cables bring to the table become more apparent the more revealing your system becomes. Which is why I always get a kick out of someone who thinks buying 400 buck interconnects for his 300 buck receiver and TSI bookies will make a difference. Then they will post that cables don't make a difference, see, I tried them and heard zip. Gets played out here and on other forums as well.

I think as a forum, we have some pretty good sayings to guide most anyone who likes audio.

Let your ears be the judge
    Everything matters
    Try new things,
Upgrade elecronics as you upgrade speakers
    Properly power your speakers.....
..and of coarse, Tubes rule !!

I think if you follow these basic principles, your world of enjoyment from audio will increase 10 fold.
