    Great photo of this storm.^^^^

My wife and were just talking about Irene being without lightning so far.

So far no lightning.... but it is dumping tons of rain still. Closing in on 2" so far in 17 hrs. I have a very quite older house and it has to pour to hear it in here. Well, I've heard it in here alot today and tonight.

This storm pales hugely to that of Hugo. About half the size. Regardless, stay safe, Polkies.

My father and my step-mom live on the Wye River on the Eastern Shore, and I just called to see if they were ready. Well, it turns out he is in the hospital in Easton with an infecton from a prostate biopsy, and she is there alone. It seems he is much better now, but upset he can't be home with her, which I can understand. However, she said she has a good supply of wine, and expects to be okay. I sure hope they both are okay.

If Hurricane Irene hits NYC dead center with category 2,
then the resultant storm will be significant.
Look at the interactive storm surge map URL below.
It appears that with cat 2, most of Manhattan would be underwater.

The NJ coastal areas would be hard hit also.
I know quite a few people with waterfront homes
    and/or boats in various marinas.

NYC has quite some preparation work to do.
(shutting down all the transportation systems,
    parking subway/rail cars underground,
evacuating the elderly/patients in nursing homes/hospitals
canceling 300 activity permits scheduled for Sunday,
making any repairs needed on Monday,
restoring transportation service once the storm is over)

NYC seems to be more organized than NJ
in terms of evacuation maps and plans.

If you would like to keep tabs on the
track Hurricane Irene is taking, see URLs below
Its current estimated track will bring it
right over NYC and Long Island.

I was enjoying a week on Long Beach Island. They began a mandatory evacuation at 8:00am. A handful of homeowners were staying. If Irene hits directly, I could see the whole island flooding. We're going to ride it out at home in East Brunswick. Should be over just in time to go back to work Monday.

You can now float down Carolina Bch Norths main street close to the marina side. It's just over the dunes from the ocean side too. It gets flooded easy when there is a new moon and the sun aligns with earth and a storm comes at us. Floods every time.

I am glad Irene slowed I don't wish anything like 1900,1912, or Ike on anyone

I hope the Hatteras and Jersey Shore etc are alright....wind damage is one thing....but flooding and storm surge damage is a much bigger mess....devestates water supply...the most important thing on earth

Raise your equipment high, stay inside at the storm's worst. Don't get too curious and go out, mother nature can be furious. I've been through a few storms like this, and I haven't seen anything yet. Stay safe, smart, somewhat sober and God bless.

Well I have one as long as i have electricity - I guess the thing I need is a generator, for when the electricity fails

This will be my first Hurricane here in beautiful Charlestown RI and hope for the best. We live real close to the ocean and up on a hill so we won't be flooded out by the sea but water can run into the bulkhead so I sealed it up tight. My biggest concern is a tree coming through the front bay window. My system is in that room and would do some damage to my SF Grand Pianos, Belles amp, Anthem PRE2L and MF A5 CDP Oh well maybe I should move it :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
    Good luck

Yeah, wouldn't want to potentially go a day or two without power in late August.

Man, we are going soft as a species.

I'm more worried about the tree in my backyard potentially dropping large branches or falling over on my house. It's a pretty big oak tree, about 100-120 feet tall and I can't put my arms around it more than 2/3rds of the way at best. It doesn't sway or anything either but there isn't any other tree near it so the Zoysia grass is the only thing reinforcing the root system. That and the growth is lopsided 'cause of a tree that USED to be on the other side.

Losing power would really suck too. Hot water heater would stop working 'cause while the burner and pilot light are gas, the thermostat is electric. I also have a bunch of food in the freeze that I've been waiting for nicer days to cook in my smoker and they just haven't materialized. But that'd be an expensive loss and major waste if the power went out.

...Here in our NATION"S Capitol it is very pleasant. Light breeze and a soft rain. The City is DEAD quiet. No traffic in my neighborhood. No bird chirps or insect noise.....kind of WEIRD !!! Only sounds are rain drops and wind. Everyone seems to be staying inside. I take it "all" are stocked up on the necessities for a "GOOD" time....one way or the other.

Enjoy the power of "doG" !! and mother "NATURE".

....It's amazing the TV coverage !!!! 24 hours straight. How much of an update can you give on a storm traveling at 14mph. That's like covering "GRANNY" driving to the market.
