Mike, they are superb. Well worth seeking out.

Brock,
How would these be in a tube based DAC? You have certainly peaked my interest in them.

My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

I am sure they would be great!
There is a guy on Ebay right now selling (6) for $300. Do I hear a group buy?

CSM41, my gear is in my sig but I'll elaborate.
I use 2 pre-amps. I have the Adcom GFP-750 which is both active and passive at the flip of a switch. I use that for shorter listening sessions and movies, etc. This pre has a processor loop (for HT) that allows me to run the Dared Sl2000A straight through. The processor loop is staight pass through (no degredation) and can be activated by remote or at the pre. This works incredibly well because I don't always have to power the tubes on for music, dvd's or background music. So I have the flexibility of active/passive and tubes. I use Signal Cable Analog II I/C's to connect the Dared thru the processor loop. MIT Terminator II cables from the Adcom pre to the amp.
My source is (2) pieces, I use a Squeezebox Touch wireless music streamer which I bought an aftermarket linear power supply from Welborne Labs for, since the supplied walwart is a cheap switching power supply. I have all my music ripped in FLAC (lossless) format on a stand alone computer I use only as a music server. The digital output of the Squeezebox is fed into a heavily modded Adcom GDA 600 digital to analog converter via COAX, again Signal Cable Digital Cable. MIT Terminator II cables from the dac to the pre-amp
My amp is a Pass Labs Aleph 30 single ended Class A amp @ 30wpc. I use the single ended inputs because I think they sound a tad better than the balanced inputs. Speaker cables are MIT Terminator II.
I have a Marantz DVD player that is hooked to the Adcom DAC via coax and I use that for movies or in a pinch single cd's that I haven't ripped to my music server.
Speakers are modded Polk Audio SDA 1C's w/ rdo tweeters, Sonicaps and Mills resistors. Power cables are all MIT Z II

My bad. I missed your sig. Single ended class A says it all. I can see where you get the synergy. Nice gear, but where's your turntable?

No TT in the mix, maybe someday again.
For my office rig I have 3 tube integrated amps I swap out occasionally for fun
Dared VP-16 a 16 wpc 6V6/6SL7 integrated amp. I use 50's RCA gray glass black plate 6V6 power tubes and I have (4) pairs of 6SL7's I roll in and out. 1959 RCA "red base" 5691; 1948 Tung Sol 6SU7GTY brown base; 1954 Sylvania JAN CHS 6SL7WGT tall glass (chrome domes) 1964 Sylvania JAN CHS 6SL7WGT
Dared MP-5 a 15 wpc hybrid tube integrated. It uses ECC85/6AQ8 for the input and mosfet output. Very neat little amp. I have about 12 different pairs of ECC85/6AQ8 to roll. The Telefunkens and Valvo hamburg sound the best.
Norh SE9- 9 wpc single ended amp which uses (2) EL34's, (2) 12AX7's and (1) 5AR4 rectifier. I have 5 different pairs of EL34's, 4 different pairs of 12AX7 and the only 5AR4 worth anything is the Mullard and I have (3) of those......for back up
I have a lot of fun swapping and rolling, etc.

You seem to do things the way I do with gear. Experiment , mix, match, always looking for the best synergy of sound. I buy, sell, buy some more, switch, etc...you get the picture. I drive my wife nuts with it. Right now my obsession is with passive bi-amplification. Dared pre to Parasound HCA 1500 to the low end of my snells. I use the Parasound amplifier loop to my tube amp to the Snell's highs. My Dared's other output goes to the powered sub. The inputs go to my TT/phono pre and my GF DAC09 to my CDP.
Future ops include a squeezebox touch and access to a massive amount of .flac files in my HD. I also just picked up that Brimar you tipped me off on. Good stuff!#1 Pass F5/Dared Sl2000a/Nola Boxers/Basis Audio 1400/Audio Technica AT33EV Phono Cartridge/Cambridge Audio 640P-Hypno Modded/GF DAC09/CPU

I've actually had the Telefunken ECC81's in there for quite awhile. They give me the detail I'm looking for and the impressive soundstage. Actually I've been swaping the Valvo 6201's and TFK's.
These 5965's might become the new permanent tube. Although I do like to roll the others in now and gain for a little change.

Thanks for the explanation. This was also a question I had looking at your 'newer' signature with the Dared included! Actually, the price for those tubes doesn't seem that bad considering that they'll probably last a while. I just ordered a Jolida 50W x 2 in order to start the journey into tube products, myself (not a bad starter--I've heard a few of their products)--so reading about others' seasoned experiences is helpful. What is it that Ted says....? lol

I found this link for the Brimar rectifier.
http://www.r-type.org/exhib/aaq0024.htm.
From the picture you posted it looks like you have a black base, not brown as many models available on ebay. Is there writing on the glass or only on the base?
My new Dared should arrive this weekend. Looking to start with getting this new rectifier and then rolling some of your recommended tubes. Any help or information you could share on these older models would be helpful. -
From what I've gathered the older Brimar's are black base with writing on the base in orange (reddish) or yellow and they came from a couple different plants. Mine doesn't say Brimar on it, but it is. It's from the STC plant in Footscray. They have an arrow on the base. The military versions have CV1863 on the base. The one's I have are old as in late 40's w/ foil "D" getter and came in old style military packing.
As they get newer the writing is always on the glass not the base.
This is a photo around the same manufacturing date of a 6SL7 from the STC Footscray plant and the writing is the same only the base on my 5Z4G is black.

I received that Brimar rectifier in the mail today. Plugged it in and...it does sound as nice as advertised. The funny thing is that the GE rectifier it replaced was no slouch. Anyway, it is breaking in as we speak. My initial impressions are highly favorable. I was blown away as well once I started rolling different rectifiers. In some instances I believe it has even more effect than the signal tubes. Although changing both the rectifier and signal tubes takes it to an even higher level.
The thing is there aren't a lot of NOS 5Z4G's to choose from. I've tried all different 5V4G and GT models and they did sound good and I even used the Bendix 6106 (5Y3) and the Brimar by far sounds the best.
Glad it makes a difference for you.
In another amp switching from a Sovtek 5AR4 to a Mullard 5AR4 was night and day. The Mullard 5AR4 rectifier is superb, especially the famed f31 coded model.

Glad to hear you've found the sound you're looking for.
You've had time to put a few hours on them now.
How are they sounding now? I've been waiting for a follow up after some listening.
Impressions after some substantial listening time are key for me.
I'm always impressed by a good looking Tele with all the scripts intact still.
I do so love a good looking vintage Euro tube.
NICE! -
Harry, I have to say the initial impressions are the same. The true test will come when I switch back to my familiar favorite. I had atleast 6-8 really good listening sessions, but now I'm moving so everything is packed up.
So this means a new listening environment, etc. My impressions may change simply because I will be in a completely different house, although the set-up and location will be similar. I'll keep this thread updated after I get moved and settled.

I already have my 3 favorite tube types so I wasn't going to spend an arm and a leg to try another type when I was unsure about how it would sound. I finally found a triple for sale here in the US from a seller I felt comfortable dealing withwhat do you use in the rest of your system? I know you have the Dared pre. I ask because IMHO, system/tube synergy makes a difference.

This thread got me started searching for a pair of the Telefunken 6201's, but as usual, I got side-tracked in a tube buying trance
First, I picked up a bunch of my favorite (12AT7 variant) NOS Mullard (Shield Logo) CV4024/M8162 tubes.
Also, I use 5965's (a 47 mu variant of the 60 mu 12AT7) in a couple spots in my gear and I came across a closely matched pair (125/122 & 127/129 on my rebuilt and calibrated Eico 667) of date-matched Westinghouse 5965's with long gray plates and Gold Pins.
I paid a ridiculously low price delivered to my front porch so I'm guessing they will sound like a$$, but I couldn't resist gold pins at that price just to try them out.

H9 - This thread inspired me to pick up my own Dared SL-2000a. I received it today and have been listening to it for the past few hours with my SDA-SRS's. WOW!!! Besides just a general warming/smoothing of the sound, it added an extra amount of bass slam that I wasn't expecting. And that's with the stock tubes that aren't even burned in yet. I look forward to the changes in the coming days and then I'll start some tube rolling!....... Rollin' rollin' rollin', get them tubes a rollin'... Rawhide!....... Sorry, "Blues Brothers" flashback.
I recently picked up a Yaqin CD-2 tube buffer also. While that made a noticable improvement also, it wasn't as much as the SL-2000a - especially in the bass department. I can only imagine that the SL-2000a (which is 4x the money, btw) will stomp the Yaqin with the right NOS tubes. So, I guess the Yaqin goes to my bedroom rig. The SL-2000a needs to stay downstairs where I listen to music most...
This forum just keeps costing me more and more money. LOL  -

H9, I think you are the one to ask about adding a pre- amp & amp. If you have a 7.2 Ht
with an AVR 100w per channel how does fit into the system and what does in do?
Does the AVR need per- amps out?
ThanksClarajack -
Received my Dared SL2000A yesterday. This is used and 2009 vintage in mint condition. It is the newer version with two channels of input and output RCA connections.
This newer versions come with a generic "Farad" brand coupling capacitor vs. Auricap. It appears to be .22uf and 400v. There is not a lot of room in this case. The PCB mounting holes are 1" spread and there is about 0.875" clearance from PCB to cover plate.
Thinking about replacing these generic caps with the Rel Cap TFTs. Here http://www.partsconnexion.com/PDF/relcap.pdf. I believe these should fit in and shouldn't be that hard to install. Any opinions on these caps for preamp input coupling?
This unit also came with a pair of Mullard ECC81 Black Sable tubes. I found these at Tube Depot and they appear to be a specialty Cryo product.
My analog source is out being modded, so I can't try this out yet. This will give me some time to pick up two or three of the recommended tube choices to roll. -
Greg, I have a pair of Sylvania, Gold Brand 6201 that I swear by as one of the best I've rolled. I lucked out on this pair awhile back and scored 'em both for 13.00 plus shipping. I have a few Sylvania 12AT7 variants and all are great tubes that won't break the bank. The GB 6201 is exceptional tho.
http://www.upscaleaudio.com/review/product/list/id/172/category/37/
Thanks Mike. That's a coincidence that I have Sylvania Gold Brand 5965's (that I think are very good) in the V4 and V8 spots in my pre that are the tubes I'm looking to roll.
I have 2 Mullard CV4024/M8162's that I want to try there (a tube I'm already familiar with) and then these Westinghouse Gold Pin 5965's that I bought for a song.
I've never tried Slvania Gold Brand 6201's, but bet they are very close to the 5965's I have and I'll grab some if I ever see a deal.
The 5965's are 47 mu gain and that's what Conrad Johnson designed for, but I don't think going up to 60 mu will hurt anything, although on paper it is a 28% increase in gain.
There are sooooo many good 12AT7 variants to roll out there it can drive you crazy :biggrin:VTL ST50 w/mods / RCA6L6GC / TlfnknECC801S
