Obviously that means we need an 18-wheeler, but bagged to give it a low center of gravity.

I'd love to see someone mack out and lower an 18-wheeler. That would be hilarious.
In 2006 our eldest daughter was a driving our (now deceased) 2003 Volvo XC90 (6-cyl, 7-seat, 6,000 lb model) which had superlative crash ratings. She was literally run over by semi with (empty) enclosed 42' trailer. That's probably 38,000 (instead of 80,000 pounds fully loaded), but the Volvo's passenger "cage" stayed intact and she had only minor physical injuries (but mentally she's still a bit tentative around semi's).

As I think about it, I guess that tends to support your theory that a well designed new tiny electric car can do OK when hit by a much larger SUV.

Meh, just food for thought. Like I said, I wouldn't drive a SmartCar either, they just seem dangerous to me, but with rollover dangers and the like, I just can't imagine SUVs are safer, especially for younger / inexperienced drivers. That said, I can't imagine having a kid on the road, and having to worry about them, and I doubt I'd be all that rational about it.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Yep, try 4 on the road (16, 18, 20 and 22), each in high school or college, living at home, and each driving a vehicle provided by my wife and I. I feel like a fleet owner with 6 vehicles.

Must be nice. Gas prices here in Canada are around $1.25 per liter. That's around $5.00 per gallon. And we are an oil exporting nation. Must be that "free" health care.

I read somewhere that the US imports more oil from Canada than anywhere else in the world. (please don't take us over). :)

There are a couple of "good" things about this (if you can allow the use of that word) that will come from $4, $5 and maybe eventually $7 per gallon 87 octane gasoline.

First, there are numerous old wells in the US already that are running dry, but are proven to have oil deeper. The have not been deepened due to the relatively high cost, but high prices at the pump will make it profitable.

Second, the massive oil-shale deposits, predominantly in Colorado and Utah, will become profitable at these high numbers.

In both cases, the profits will flow mostly to US based companies instead of overseas.

I'm not sure this is good or bad, but the majority of the oil-shale rich lands are owned by the Federal government and the rights have to be leased from the government. They'll get the lease funds up front and fuel taxes on the back end to help a tiny bit on the revenue end.

The bad part is, you can pretty much figure everything will skyrocket. I mean what can you think of in your home that does not contain petroleum derivatives, or depend upon fule to deliver it there?

    We are pretty much f'd.

All good points. Also most of our pensions/401k's probably have something somewhere invested in oil. Which if nothing else helps offset the losses from what the higher oil does do to the market. As much as it sucks as someone else has said there is not much we can do about the prices, even when the increases are out right driven by greed more than the excuses always given. It helps me deal with it by thinking of any of the benefits that come with the BS, along with buying a gas sipper for commuting to work, keeping my speed down (60mph highway), keeping the house colder than I like, increasing my homes efficiency when I can. All a drop in the bucket, but I keep a little more money in my pocket rather than handing it over to someone else.

Well, here we are at $3.75 a gallon for regular. Just as the news predicted. You don't want to know what they are predicting now. All I can say is start cutting back on things unless you have money in the bank.

I would say $4.00 for regular unleaded somewhere between Memorial Day and July Da Fourth. That's in MA; probably a little cheaper many other places -
Hmmm, let's see where you stand on your prediction......that said, I have no idea what you pay right now. Just curious as to whether you are above or below your prediction.....

Gas is down a couple of cents here (MA); about $3.50 right now most places in my environs.

$5.59 for regular unleaded which is what you had better want because that is all there is. And with the water added the octane rating is way up there.
On the empty side it takes about $150.00 to top it off.

Colorado (Denver) area is, currently, very inexpensive.

Everywhere else... it's a creepin' up. I posted this AM only because gas prices in Boston were the top story on the radio news when the alarm went off this AM...

Prices here are nipping at 5 bucks a gallon for premium.

Not to turn to political with this, but has anyone noticed when gas broke 3 bucks a gallon under the previous idiot, the media and Queen Nancy were all over it. Where the hell are they now I wonder?

How about asking your local oil company? Seriously what can the Government do? They have tried here and well... that's the price to play. Bitter? Yes... but it's the truth. No one likes it. Maybe I'm misinformed or things are different up here but it's all the same.

The US government has little effect on the price of gasoline.

It boggles my mind when people always blame the government here for what only those countries to the East have control over.

You are sadly mis-informed... there is more oil in the ground in North America than anywhere else on earth, but the restrictions placed on oil companies prevent them from getting to it. Combine this with the fact that refineries are running at full capacity to refine what we do have and you end up with a system that is pushed to the limit. Loose a refinery in Louisiana, and gas prices in Cleveland go up a dime.

We need the will to drill, and added refining capacity of 10.00 a gallon is not that far off. I would ratehr we provide jobs in this country with our hard earned dollars rather than sending the cash over to countries that use our money to educate and train the next generation of Mohammed Atta's.
