Great PQ and SQ on Episode IV. Opening sequence lasers were so dated....obviously, but still funny to see. Some scenes were a bit fuzzy. Pretty cool to watch an old movie in HD, though.

I'm watching the OT first, as the prequels are heavily predicated on you having seen the OT. Watched A New Hope and Empire... and man, did they do a great job with these! So far, the changes they've made haven't offended me, and it seems like they must have done a little work making the newer CGI stuff integrate better with the other material, 'cause it doesn't stand out to me like it did on DVD.

The sound on ANH is WAY better than I imagined it could be. Kudos to Ben Burtt and Matthew West for getting that right. I also previewed the pod race just to test surround use and LFE, and it was impressive! Glad I bought the whole shebang!

    DarbeeVision DVP5000 video processor

Interesting many of you think it's supposed to be watched 1-6. The contrast between the end of 3 and the beginning of 4 sort of jars one out of the movie series because too much stuff was added to 1-3 effects and plotwise to mesh them together smoothly. Seemed to make more sense to me in order of production 4-6, 1-3 when you could just watch each almost as separate stories. And the dated effects wouldn't be as obvious with the better effects last. But to each their own, I guess.

Videowise, I don't think 4-6 have ever looked better. Without CGI, you can really see the detail (and imperfections) on things like droids, costumes, and models. Maybe it's just because there's less green screen and more actual surfaces and textures that went through an actual camera lens, but I actually preferred the video presentation of 4-6 to 1-3 for the detail in the little things, like the weathering and lighting of the Jawa sand crawler. Of course, there's more going on in each effects scene in 1-3. But I think each individual element is less detailed when done in CGI.

Audio is outstanding. Seemed a little softer than other bombastic sound tracks until I pushed it near reference levels. And 4 sounds great for such an old source. But I think some of the best audio demo scenes are still in 1-3.

Spun up Episode I last night, and thought amazing PQ, audio was top notch throughout. One thing I noticed was during the pod races, how the people in the stands look fuzzy, but when it switches to the announcer of the race it smooths out. No really a complaint, but noticeable. Overall though, well worth the price. I ended up buying the box set locally. My Amazon order will take too long to arrive so I'll send it back.

Not to mention some scenes in the OT work better if you don't know some of the mush Lucas inserted later in the series.

    ***Spoiler***

Like Leia being Luke's sister. Turns some innocent banter between Han, Luke, and Leia into a slight ick factor with Luke being attracted to her in 4 and even sharing a passionate kiss in 5.

What he has done since the original films is make billions off their legacy by desecrating his classic work time and again, knowing that people will step up with thier money and buy it.

This only works if you never watch it. But then, you will at least have to go through the motions and pretend to enjoy it ... ;)

Welcome to the dark side ... it really hasn't looked or sounded better!

I know I'll be in the minority here... but when Vader screams no now in Jedi? Totally works for me. I was all prepared to be offended, but honestly, it made that scene better IMHO. And the Ewoks blinking definitely makes them less creepy. No buyer's remorse here!

+1, For me Vader's scream was him coming full circle back to Anikin , it compliments the scream at the end of episode three when truly becomes Darth Vader, I didn't think I'd go for it but the wife and I looked at each other and agreed. Kudos to Lucas for the fantastic job on the work on 4-6 as they can stand toe to toe with modern released movies and send some packing:biggrin: Now 1-3 may just put them at the top of the reference pile. We shall see!

Just spun up Ep 4 ANH. WOW, absolutely gorgeous PQ and SQ! The PQ is very deep and rich on my 50" Panny Plasma.

Of all of Lucas' tinkering over the years with the movies, I have to say one of the best shots he added is the Rebel fighters making that up close turn around the planet Yavin on their way to the Death Star. On Blu Ray, this sequence is simply stunning! When the fighters start banking around Yavin, they now have a very deep LFE rumble to their engines.

Second on my list of favorite additions is the overhead shot of the Millenium Falcon lifting off from Mos Eisley SpacePort during their escape from Tattoine. I love that overhead shot of it lifting off, then the deep LFE rumble of the engines kicking in.

Oh, the famous opening shot of Ep 4 has never looked better!

I know some sites were crying over the fact that the "scream" Obi Wan did when coming to save Luke from the Sandpeople was changed and sounded goofy. When I first heard it on the web, it did sound goofy. Hearing it now on the Blu Ray, it works for me. No problem on this end!
    No excuses!

I got my set and watched IV first - call me nostalgic.

Awesome PQ and SQ as well. Gonna watch ESB tonight.

Lots of folks on AVS complaining about audio drop outs and DTS 'bomb' - pretty sure it is all limited to those bitstreaming from their players to AVR - so it is an AVR issue (or bad Bluray mastering, imo).

H9: If you don't trust what you are hearing, then maybe you need to be less invested in a hobby which all the pleasure comes from listening to music.

I'm with you Erik. I had planned to watch 1-5 but once I got the set I had to watch them in release order. Just watched Empire last night, stunningly amazing PQ and SQ.

Watched Episode 3 last night, looked and sounded great:)! The opening battle scene kicks butt, I actually had to adjust subwoofer level in the avr menu down a full notch from what I had it when watching Episode 1 and 2. As for the DTS "bomb", I remember a few years back when I got my Yammy 663, I was on the AVS forum and there were people with Onkyo's complaining about it.

I have watched the first two, and started the third tonight. So far I have been very impressed, and happy, with both the picture and the audio. This is much better than the DVD. When this was announced around the beginning of the year, I held off on re-watching any episode. After waiting nine months to watch any episode, thanks to the Bluray edition, this is like watching something new. I hope everyone who bad mouthed this before it was released really feel like fools now.
