It's like... I want to be excited, but I know George is just gonna pre-compensate the audio for the THX rolloff the way they did on the Indy 4 Blu-ray, totally ruining the high-frequency details. But still, I'm keeping my fingers crossed, since having 1-3 in 1080p will be worth the price of this set.
Equipment list:
Onkyo TX-NR3010 9.2 AVR
Emotiva XPA-3 amp
Polk RTi70 mains, CSi40 center, RTi38 surrounds, RTi28 rears and heights
SVS 20-39CS+ subwoofer powered by Crown XLS1500
Oppo BDP-93 Blu-ray player
DarbeeVision DVP5000 video processor
Epson 8500UB 1080p projector
Elite Screens Sable 120" CineWhite screen

Yep, but still no remastered "Original versions" or "original versions" period will be included of course. His explanation of why does not make sense (to me) either. Gotta stick with the LD's of episodes 4, 5, and 6.

Thank God I have the original release versions on Laserdisc. I also have VHS box sets and dvds.... no original will ever come on Blu because he butchered the masters to make the obaminations we are left with.

I will not be getting the blurays, but I will rent a couple just to check them out.

Yeah, this is a day one buy for me. The digital changes, for the most part, don't bother me. It'll just be cool to watch these in 1080p with lossless audio crankin' (though I'm still concerned he'll pre-compensate the mix for the THX rolloff, which always sounds dull on my Audyssey'd system because it's already doing its own rolloff).

But at least I think it's fair to say that Blu-ray has hit critical mass as a format. Hell, if we can get those extended LOTR Blu-rays, I'll be set. ;)

Excellent! I personally don't care which version is released since this is what some would call the "holy grail" of Bluray's. The DVD version of Attack of the Clones is one of my favorite to give the system a good workout. Every channel gets used well.

Now only if they would release Ewoks: The Battle for Endor on Bluray, then we'd have a deal!

There's something about the potential of seeing an Ewok based movie in HiDef that would make it all worth....their cute fuzzy little b-tards!! :D

That sounds like a fantastic idea. I still have the non-updated VHS set of Ep.4-6, I might have to dig those out before they degrade any further. (need to transfer to DVD)

Didn't they come out with a DVD version last year or something that is the same as the originals?

edit: just checked, was released in 2006.

You should check out Adywan's A new hope re-edit.. it's quite amazing. It's in HD and has hundreds of corrections. I believe it was a frame by frame edit. He is also doing Empire and Return. Right now, he has released a HD Empire version that has simply been color corrected (amazing already)

I knew George was tinkering around with placing a **** character in the films, but I did not think he would do this to Vader... He will now be known in the Star Wars universe as Darthie.

For the life of me, I don't understand why some people hate the expanded versions of the original Star Wars movies. I really fail to see how it "ruins" anything. In my mind, all it does is make it better. Parts of the storyline make a lot more sense...for instance, the scene with Jabba by the Millenium Falcon. In the originals, we never really know precisely why Jabba is after Han in the first place. You get a rough idea...but you don't really get the whole picture. That's just one example.

That IS how George Lucas originally wanted the movies to be. The only reason those scenes weren't in the original movies was because the technology of the day didn't allow Lucas to make the scenes as well as he would have liked...and a few scenes were edited out for time.

Hopefully they take the time to do these Blu-rays the right way. I don't have a Blu-ray player yet...but when I get one, this box set will definitely be one of my first Blu-ray purchases.

The problem I have with the reworked films is that they messed with a film regarded by most as a classic. Imagine them going in and editing a few scenes of Gone With the Wind or The Wizard of Oz because technology allowed them to add scenes that the director wanted, but were not available....

That's a bit different. The director of both those movies is long since deceased. It's not as if someone else went in and changed Star Wars after Lucas's death or something like that...Lucas himself changed the movies to better suit the vision that he originally had for them.

So they made Mos Eisley look like something of actual significance, rather than a building and a dust storm? That's a bad thing? On the whole, they really added relatively little to the movies. I think it's something like a grand total of 5 minutes or so worth of new footage per movie...give or take.

    But, to each their own.

Just my opinion, but I think that the success of Lucas' efforts are inversely proportional to the amount of money and creative control he has over the movie. Star Wars worked because it was shot on a shoestring and he had to concentrate on story over all those special effects he couldn't do. So I'm fine with the originals and would like to see his tinkering less, not more as I think Lucas gets too distracted when he gets carte blanche. Again, just my opinion.

How would you guys introduce someone to the Star Wars movies? I mean someone that has never seen any of the movies (thinking a few years from now a kid or teenager that never saw them)?
Would you have them start with episode 1, or maybe episode 4?????

Some of the new stuff they added seemed hoakie to me, like it didn't visually flow with the original film footage. Also, when the original came out 30 or so years ago, and seeing the original close to 100 times I would guess, I never found myself questioning the storyline of why Jabba was tracking down Han. I see too many current flicks today where every little detail and nuance is verbally explained to viewers, as if the viewers are so stupid they can neither fill in the blanks or use their own imagination. Again, to each his own. I will end up buying the 6 movie set eventually anyways, and George Lucas could give a rat's **** of what we think either way.
