Popping noise from Monitor 70s

i just picked up a set of used Monitor 70s in good condition from grimmace19.
i hooked them up to my Brand new Denon 2311ci into my front channel. i used the same speaker wires i had hooked up on my Monitor 50. i moved the M50 to the rear.

i played a movie and watch some tv (Direct TV) and noticed a popping noise coming from my speakers. i did a lil trouble shooting and noticed it was the M70s. i unhooked all my other speakers just to make sure. i swapped the M50 back as there were before and no popping from them.

i tried different wires and still get the popping from the M70s. i swapped them from left to right and still the same thing.

i contacted grimmace19 just to make sure he did not have the same issues and he did not. he stated the boxes were in good condition and the foam was too.

the boxes came a lil beat up and the foam did not look good.

now both speakers are making the same popping noise at higher volume, so make it could be from my Denon?

any input please????

    The Denon may not have the grunt needed to drive the speakers properly. Not only are the drivers larger, there 2 additional drivers per cabinet. What did grimmace19 power them with?

    I had them on a Yamaha 565 nothing substantial but also never had any issues. I might not have been driving them hard compared to mole' either... not sure.

    -80.5 to + 7.5 dB is the volume on my AVR

    anything above -10.0 is when it starts to pop

    Guess I never drove the yamaha that far. Anything above -20 got to a volume I didn't care to listen at. How many watts is the denon you are using?

    That's too high, turn it down.

    Yeah, right. It's rated at 105wpc and I guarantee it's not even close to that. A big clue is that it only weights 24lbs, which means it doesn't have a beefy power supply. Hell, I've got a CDP that weighs over twice that.

    Even if it did put out a real super clean 105wpc with your 89dB efficient speakers, theoretically...

    89dB = 1 watt
    91dB = 2 watts
    94dB = 4 watts
    97dB = 8 watts
    100dB = 16 watts
    103dB = 32 watts
    105dB = 64 watts
    108dB = 128 watts

    In reality, I doubt you'll get an SLP level higher than 105dB before clipping.

    The good news is that your AVR has pre amp outputs, which means you can add an external power amp, if you so desired.

    mole', which DirecTv box do you have?

    Some of those have had some audio issues in the past. How is it connected to your Denon? (Digital coax, optical, HDMI, etc.)

    Next question, does it do this when watching/listening to another source? (cd, dvd, etc.)

    its the new Direct TV HD/DVR boxes. the front is like a touch screen.

    i have everything hooked up to the Denon VIA gold tipped HDMI cables.

    so far i think it has only been from watching DTV, also when watching DTV the volume will cutout for a few seconds and then come back.

    I'm assuming you are running the audio through HDMI, yes?

    If you have an optical audio cable around,(if not, pick one up tomorrow) try one of those for the audio. Leave the HDMI in place for the video though. Don't forget to enable the optical out in the menu settings of your DTV receiver. I'm thinking this is likely an HDMI issue. (fingers crossed)

    By using the optical for the DTV box, you won't be degrading the sound quality by bypassing the HDMI cable.

    im only using the HDMIs at this point. ill pick up an optical cable and see if that helps. should i try using another HDMI cable?

    BTW

    Only source that causes this is the DirecTv box, via HDMI? Yeah I'd try different sources and I'd also run a coaxial or optical digital signal out of the DTV box for sound. My guess is that it isn't the speakers or the receiver's amps.

    Two Channel Setup:

    Speakers: Wharfedale Opus 2-3
    Integrated Amp: Krell S-300i
    DAC: Arcam irDac
    Source: iMac
    Remote Control: iPad Mini

    3.2 Home Theater Setup:

    Fronts: Klipsch RP-160M
    Center: Klipsch RP-160M
    Subwoofer: SVS PB12NSD (X 2)
    AVR: Yamaha Aventage RX-A2030
    Blu Ray: Sony BDP-S790
    TV Source: DirecTV Genie

    How did we get from the volume level being too high to cables? If you don't get the popping with the M50's, it's not a cable/DirecTv box issue.
