I saw this cat walking down the sidewalk about 20 minutes afo and went over to pet it. It was purring and rolling on its back and all of a sudden it sent crazy and tried to bite me. I got my hand out of the way but I did not see its other paw coming for me right forearm. Now I have a big swollen scratch on my arm. If I ever see this cat again I am getting out my Bow and it is gonna get it good. Nice big broadhead through its body. Sorry to the cat lovers out there, but it is gonna happen.

So, you're going to kill a cat that you didn't know because you got a scratch from it? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Don't be a frickin jerk. Cats almost always bite when they get on their backs if you try to pet them. Even my cat at home that I've had for 7 years does this. Cats get defensive when they are on their backs. Just leave that thing alone and be glad that its keeping the rodent population under control!

i agree with madmax. The cat was obviously planning this for a long time and intended to lure him in the whole time so that he could attack at the perfect moment. Luckily Mike's catlike reflexes are better than the cats. It is safe to safe that Mike is in fact a real puss!:D

Ok, after all the negative posts I have decided to leave the cat alone, I was just suprised at it's behavior change that is all. I am not not a bad person, just got caught off guard is all.

Not all replies were completely negative, some were more a gentle kick to the nads to get you back in line! ;) Sounds like you found a remedy though. Heck it may even calm the cat down.

Yeah - cats can get defensive/playful on their backs. If you're not expecting it, they can startle you with a bite.

Cats are pretty smart when it comes to biting you. They normally don't bite as hard as they can. You may think the cat is biting hard but in the cat's mind, they are "backing off."

I know because I have worked with some shelter cats. You would not believe how hard they can bite you. After that, when my cat bit me I realized he was taking it easy on me!

    Some fun facts about cats:
Last animal domesticated by man - closest to their wild roots
Only non-pack and non-herding animal domesticated by man
Only animals domesticated that were lone hunters in the wild
Genetically identical to the African wildcat

    That's pretty funny, man. ;)

I used to let the neighbors cat in the house and it would lounge around. I could pet it or whatever, no problem. At some point I was picking on it, and the cat took it for awhile then walked away. Awhile later I was walking by and it attacked my leg, now he was picking on me! The funny part is you could tell it decided right away to walk away normally and get me back later. Before that I never thought cats would plan things out.

My neighbors recently acquired a couple of chickens (cute little chicks...). They ran around their yard at first, but their dog apparently annoyed them, so they've decided to hang where the dog can't go... my yard (invisible fence). Long story, short - They're roosters now and they spent the afternoon pooping on my deck! Would it be OK to kill these? How long would it take to get them grill-ready? :D

my older cat will come and nudge my leg, then lay on her back and begin attacking and scratching my feet.. unprovoked too. then I toss her outside.. which is what she wanted in the first place, but that's just her way of saying, let me out.

Even though I have two cats I personally did not take offense at your threat to kill the cat. If you do decide to hunt the cat down and kill it in your neighborhood, please post a description of the event. ;)

That should have been enough to leave them alone in their wilderness. Can they be hunted and are they good to eat? BBQued maybe :p

OK, a little additional history here. We didn't pick cats, they picked us. Mankind started out as hunter gatherers so dogs, as our hunter companions, were on the scene a long time ago. Later we got into livestock and other animals were domesticated.

Eventually mankind got into farming and stocking grain. 'Bout 9000 BC. With the grain came mice. With the mice came, guess what? cats. Somewhere along the line cats decided they liked us and vice versa. The rest is, as they say, is history.

Yes, cats can be hunted. However in many cases cats have formed a bond for life with a human so expect a solid azz thumping from said human if you hunt one of those cats. Yes, they can be barbecued but, ugh, not really sure why you would want to do that.

As I posted earlier, cats are essentially wild animals, only recently domesticated. If you don't like 'em, leave 'em alone.

Forming a bond with a cat is more difficult than other pets. But once it's there, it's very special. :o:o

+1 on this. Another point, do you have a dog? If the cat smelled the dog that also may have triggered the attack.

Mike, keep an eye on that scratch, it could easily become infected. If it does, get to the hospital ASAP so they can give you antibiotics & clean up the scratch.

You have now learned a valuable lesson.

Let me get this straight, you went up to a strange animal that you're not familiar with and are upset that it injured you?

reminds me of my old neighbor's cat. She would come up and nuzzle your leg when she wanted you to pet her, then start to claw and bit. Gently at first, but working up to all out rage if she did not receive her required treatment after a period of time.
