Got mine today, the benefit of living close to the manufacturer
Larry, I ordered a set for my 2Bs and ended up with 3 passives, 5 mids, and no tweeters??"The secret of happiness is freedom. The secret of freedom is courage." Thucydides -

OK, just got done with the first speaker. Here's what I did:
As you can see in the photos, I clamped the template in place so it would not move. I drilled some test holes in a spare piece of mdf so I could get the right size holes. I wanted a really snug fit. I think 9/32 would have been the right size but the closest I had was 17/64 so that's what I used and then I just routered the holes out a little after I drilled them. Not the ideal approach but it worked and I didn't want to run 20 min back to town for the right drill bit.
Before drilling, I put a piece of cardboard under the holes to catch the sawdust - made cleanup a lot easier. As soon as the holes were just big enough, I put the ring in place and used the c clamp to press the rings all the way in. A little bit at a time under alternating posts and it gave a nice tight fit.
The first mid went in really easy, the flat side goes towards midline where the brace is on a 2B. Unfortunately, the brace was off center and the 2nd ring wouldn't fit  Nothing a few seconds on the bench grinder can't cure. Which I don't have:( What i do have is a file, a vise, and plenty of time on my hands so after a little sweat I get the ring filed down enough to fit. This isn't Larry's fault, he's got the flat side cut off about as far as it can go. If he didn't do that, it would have taken me a LOT longer.
I took off the old mortite, which came off pretty easily, and applied new. I don't think this is strictly necessary but I wanted the pleasure of cranking the drivers down It was great tightening the drivers down without worrying about stripping the mdf.
Well worth the effort, and the price. A big Thank You to Larry for doing this and giving us such a great deal on the cost.
This also gave me the opportunity to correct a known problem. I did my crossovers without knowing that I shouldn't have hot glued my resistors. The last picture shows what can happen if the resistor doesn't get enough heat dissipation. I had a new cap and resistor in hand so I replaced those while I was at it.
Off to do the second speaker, I hope its cross brace is better centered!"The secret of happiness is freedom. The secret of freedom is courage." Thucydides -
Off center?? That sucks my 1C's went right in. Hummm I'm guessing this will come up again.. The 1C's and 2A/2B ect. Should be the only ones that come up with this problem. I want to know people..Polk Audio SDA 2.3tl Fully Hot Rodded. 😎

Well Doug aka Joseph A. I am truely glad you cleared that up.:D My mother was the only person who called me Joseph A. and it was beginning to spook me :eek:as she has passed on a few years ago.
Seriously I kept wondering if Larry was referring to me.;) -
Just wanted to follow up with some quick impressions. I was out of the house most of the rest of the weekend after I installed the rings so I haven't had a chance to spend some quality listening time. However, it was immediately apparent that the addition of the rings had a pasitive impact on the sound.
The mids and bass had much improved presence and clarity. This was even noticed immediately and commented on by my wife when she heard them. The additional clamping ability provided by the rings, along with the mortite, coupled the drivers to the cabinet much better than using the woods screws and mortite.
The amount of improvement heard may be dependent on how tightly cinched your drivers are with the screws versus how tight they are with the rings. For me, the difference is significant and I am extremely pleased with this tweak."The secret of happiness is freedom. The secret of freedom is courage." Thucydides -
Larry,
I put payment in the mail today.

LOL, My Dad was a Joseph too, hence always go by my middle name. I'm sure your Mother is listening to all the heavenly sounds up there with a smile on her face, because she is listening to a far better system than you or any of us could come up with!

I noticed the same thing but didn't want to say anything till some of you guys got yours. The nice thing is no worries when you need to pull a driver with the wood splitting..Polk Audio SDA 2.3tl Fully Hot Rodded. 😎

So are the rings mortited to the cabinet and then the driver mortited to the rings? My guess is that would be overkill, but I had to ask. I assume the rings go inside the cabinet behind.

I reread some of this thread and they do indeed go *inside*, I knew that but I had to ask. Anyone gluing the rings in place?"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. H9
The ring goes in from the inside of the cabinet with the posts sticking partially through the drilled holes. I only used mortite on the driver. I never even considered using it for the rings. I'm with you, I think that would be overkill and of dubious benefit. The driver isn't mortited to the ring, it's still mortited to the cabinet and then screwed on to the ring.
I didn't glue mine, they were plenty snug as is and as long as it took me to do it the way I did it, my hot glue would have been cold glue by the time I got them in place. It could be easier/just as good to make the post holes bigger so they slide in easier and glue it in place, I don't know."The secret of happiness is freedom. The secret of freedom is courage." They go in snug if you take your time, But I did put a little hot glue on the side of the ring to the cabinet.. Yes it would be overkill IMO with the mortite...Polk Audio SDA 2.3tl Fully Hot Rodded. 😎
