It also helps them transition people over to Blu-ray players. The more they do these dual-disc releases with the DVD and BD in the package, the more you're going to see people buying it for the DVD ending up buying a Blu-ray player at some point in the future.

I don't care for the extra dvd either. I think it could have been put to better use as an extras/behind the scenes disc about the making of the film.

Wait... that would be the director's cut that will come out at christmas time so I can get soaked for another 30 buck's.

I think Disney leads the way on this, often providing a blu-ray, DVD, and a digital copy in the same package. Sort of makes sense since kids need to be entertained on a variety of systems. They even include blu-rays in their 'DVD' versions. So it can be confusing (or irrelevant) which version you buy.

They don't necessarily charge more either. Disney has been pretty consistent in releasing their classic animations with coupons and promotions that take 10 bucks off the price. So on release day, the blu-rays have gone for near 10 bucks if you used all the promotions properly. If you don't like paying a lot, just time your purchase right (use promotions and/or skip the day of release and wait on Amazon) and you can sometimes get blu-rays as cheap or cheaper than their DVD counterparts even with the extra copies. 18 bucks and change is pretty cheap for a Blu-ray and a DVD for a movie like Avatar. And that was a day of release promotion.

I see them doing the BD/DVD combo for two reasons. One, for the transition like Kunta said. The other, not really for traveling, but for secondary systems. I'm sure there are several DVD players in the average home, and only one BD player (if that) in the main watching area. At least this way you can still get the BD AND be able to watch it in a different room.
    +1

I wish all the blu-rays came this way. I have one player in my house but the other 4 TV's in the house all have DVD players connected to them. I wold prefer to watch everything on blu-ray, but if they do not come with a DVD copy - I can only get the things I want to watch on blu-ray. If it is a movie my wife or kids would like to watch (and they often like to watch in their bedroom while playing, folding clothes or just before going to bed) I end up having to get the DVD version instead. Believe it or not, somtimes people don't want to revel in immersive surround sound or cinimatic detail, but just want to watch a movie.... (Yeah, I think it's wierd to)

Just last night my wife wanted to watch the proposal upstairs and couldn't (blu-ray only) and asked why I had purchased the blu-ray copy when we could only watch it downstairs..... I could just need to be on the lookout for a cheap blu-ray player for our bedroom, but I would rather replace the one on my main system and bring my old main DVD (a nice but basic Sony BDP-350) up to the bedroom. What I would like to purchase is wireless and would stream netflix movies for me - but that would put the price up around $400 still and that is just more money that I care to spend at the current time. Until then, I would gladly pay and extra Dollar or two to get a DVD copy bundled in with the blu-ray version.

I do wish they would have provided a digital copy as well. I know you can still rip it off the DVD but the digital copy is a lot easier for me.

I have yet to do anything with any digital copy of a DVD. That one I just don't understand.

Just watched the UP blu-ray, hit the menu button at startup and it took me straight to the main menu. Are you talking about something that happened only on DVDs? If the kids have to sit through some previews, I'll still take the bundled dvds.

I was curious, so I popped in the UP DVD too. Menu button still skipped all the previews and went straight to the main menu. So I guess they don't force you to watch the previews anymore?

I didn't mean to make this such a big deal about giving too much credit to Disney for 'inventing' the idea. It's just a fact that they often bundle the blu-ray, DVD, and a digital copy together, for a pretty good promotional price. And were among the first blu-ray studios to do so. Can we leave it at that?

Picked up the Avatar BR combo today. Watched the DVD version and was fairly impressed. I do not have a BR player at the moment but plan on getting one before to long. The BR version with DVD was only $5 more than the DVD only version. Hopefully I will be upgrading to BR pretty soon.

Easy fix, go buy it and enjoy it. When the other copy comes in take it back and refund your purchase. I've done this a few times waiting on movies to show up.

I have read and listened to so many people say this movie isn't really that good without 3d. It's what made the movie , the story was weak and all that crap.

Well, I gotta say I loved it. The story was solid. Yes it was typical of what you would expect of a story like this one , but I still liked loved it.
Video quality was top notch , clear fully detailed and excellent color.
Audio was one of the very best Blu ray or anything I have ever heard. My god I didn't realize how good my system could be until now. I'm fully impressed. I don't have external subs as I use the internal subs of the Mythos ST's and they landed so many knock out punches for a lifetime of fights.

I'm so glad I went and picked it up , it's my new Demo disk on all my jobs now.

One problem with using the free shipping option with Amazon is they take their time shipping your order. I didn't get the shippinmg email until Thursday afternoon, and I was hoping it would be here by today.

It's a roll of the dice. Amazon ships from origin points all over the US. Cross country is slow, but if it's close, you probably would have gotten it by now. Release dates are kind of arbitrary anyways. Now you've got a movie for this weekend and next. I never mind waiting.

My Denon DV 2500 BTCI ( originall FW) has no problem playing the Avatar BR disk.

Few folkd over Audiogon complaint abt their Oppo 83 and the Pio Elie BDP51 could not play the disk. I will check on my Onkyo BR, Pio BDP95 and BDP51 BR this week-end if these complaints are for real. Otherwise, SQ and PQ are amazingly good.

I just finished watching the movie.
The sound ROCKED! The movie took my SRT system to a whole new level.
The image was the best seen on my Panasonic plasma.
Overall, I was pleased with the movie. The weak part was the story.

I just finished playing through the whole movie and WOW. I think this is the best BD I have seen to date besides Baraka. My only regard is that they continue to release titles with such a great transfer. Now that we know the studios have the potential to release such good transfers let's hope they can carry on. I've seen some BD titles that are equal to DVD quality.

Perdictable story and the bass was appropriate with the audio mix. The special effects was the standout and I would watch it again.

This is a very true statement. Many people complain about the video quality of blu-ray compared to DVD upconversion or not being able to hear the difference between lossless and vanilla DD or DTS.

Fact is, studios often go back to poor quality masters to get the video and almost all movie tracks, even with lossless encodes, don't approach the maximum audio quality possible (which exceeds the capabilities of audiophile multichannel DVD-audio music disks).

I could also care less about having supplemental material on a disk if it means a lower quality transfer.

I bought and watched with the family for the first time last night. The DTS Master audio was awesome....I wish more more movies used this format vs. Dolby Digital. Video was impressive also. Now to the story....ehhh...good, but Star Wars was better IMO. Overall, worth buying though.

What a spectacular audio track. This was the first bluray movie I actually found myself turn the sub down. Great LFE content from start to finish. This a an amazing demo movie for anyone wanting to test a audio or video source. The story its self could of been better but it was never boring. I could already tell Avatar 2 will be made by this ending.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie because of the technical achievements. I was very pleased with the sound and PQ on my system. I will echo what all have said in that the story was a little better than good. Overall the PQ and SQ were 5 / 5 but the story was a solid 3 / 5. I will watch it again but the story wasn't so deep that there may be hidden gems to find in the story line. The characters were all pretty well developed. With the movie being almost 3 hours long I think the screen play could have delved more into some of the sub plots much better. For example they could have gone deeper into the assimilation phase for the main character as well as explored Sigourney Weavers character and her history with the Navi (sp).
I'm not sure of the subliminal messages that are being discussed concerning the military aspect and how it relates to current events and all that. There have been many films over the years that explored violent exploitation of indigenous societies, so I won't allow myself to go there, just enjoy the film and keep the politics out. FWIW have fun....
