Well, my Sammy BD-UP5000 gave out a message to update the firmware as soon as I plopped the BD disc.

Now I can't wait for the Oppo to be done.

My Oppo BDP-83 didn't require an update, but my Best Buy made a point of saying "just so you know a firmware update may be required," when I was at the register.

Anyways, the PQ is amazing on the PJ and the sound is as well. I'm no expert, but I have a feeling even this bare bones Blu-Ray will be demo material on both levels....

yeah, i posted nevermind earlier because i got myself confused. i'm looking forward to viewing this. i popped it in on my bluray attached to my rptv 65" 1080i and it looked superb. i'll look forward to watching it in 1080p on the projector. just waiting for the sun to go down completely.

i shouldn't have canceled my purchase on amazon as it just had to spend $4 to rent this thing and just now bought it anyway via amazon. they also have the dark knight bluray for under $10 shipped.

I wonder how many BD players out there need to be updated. My Sammy was disco 2 years ago and this is the first BD that requires firmware update. No more firmware update, the last one was OCT '08. I rented quite a few BDs from BB, this movie must have a very specific technology to play properly. Oh well, planned obsolescence in a true sense.

I just finished this, STUNNING! Hands down there is no better looking or sounding Blu-ray right now, none. This movie is simply amazing from a technical standpoint and for the creation of a seriously fantastic fantasy world. James truly is "the king of the world", at least in the film world.

Just went to Wally World about 2 hours ago and much to my surprise it is still $18.99 the day after it dropped. Usually the sale prices are only good for the date of release. Oh well, I'm not complaining, I'll check it out tonight probably on the trusty PS3 and report back.

+1, I forgot that it had the regular DVD in it as well for $18.99!! The DVD was the same price, so I basically got the Blu Ray for free, lol.

I played the regular DVD last night. It has great transfer and detailed too. Avatar has really re-defined resolution level, even for standard definition.

This is starting to be the norm for some studios (like Disney). When they have new releases this low, sort of makes it an easy dicision to get the blu-ray.

Sitting 7' away from my 96" screen with my Epson 1080UB shooting the 1080p image I could not see what you did. But then again, this goes back to the age old comment, never, ever trust what you see on a display in a store, everyone knows better, well, almost everyone.

Watched it earlier. Video was amazing. Audio... Y'know, I hate when THX pre-compensates the mix for near-field listening, because those of us using Audyssey are kinda' screwed by that. THX applies the Re-EQ rolloff before encoding and remixes the surround levels, and then when Audyssey's rolloff comes into play, the highs sound dull. It doesn't sound BAD by any stretch, but it doesn't sound as good as if they had just put the archive-quality theatrical mix on the damn disc. I was impressed by how cohesive the surround was (and running DPL-IIz Height on top of the DTS-MA track made it SO immersive), but it just lacked the sparkling crisp highs I'm used to hearing on non-THX discs, especially where the score is concerned. I was hoping that practice of THX re-mixes would die with DVD, but... guess not.

Still... amazing picture quality. Definitely worth the purchase.
