Finally got to watch the whole thing, and on my TV the picture was superb, and sonically it is easily the best BluRay I currently have.... simply amazing. The story does still suck, but I could watch it several times over and still enjoy the imagery and sound. I could not be happier I bough the film.

Is it just me or does Neytiri get hotter each time you watch the film or not.:p

Met James Cameron tonight - he gave an incredible, insightful panel discussion on the science and thinking going on behind Avatar.

Thinking behind Avatar? Easy. I'll take the creatures from the latest Star Wars, mix in the ships from Aliens, splice in the plot of dancing with wolves and dash in the characters from titanic. Yes it's a good movie but the hype is waaaaay over done for this rehashed out movie because he made it all flash. Glad I didn't see it in the theater and used a free rental at blockbuster to see it tonight.

But I do gotta say the pq/aq were pretty damn impressive.

It was a largely technical/scientific talk (held at CaltecH), and I was impressed at Cameron's deep grasp of technical details.

You could pretty much take any handful of movies and do a similar comparison.

That being said, yes, the storyline behind Avatar was about as basic as they come, but other then that, the visuals were amazing and the 3D, by far the best I've ever seen.
    If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent.

I'm glad I saw it in the theater. I only regret not seeing it in 3d in an IMAX..

Pretty much. Glad I bought it, but compared to my other purchase for the week, Minority Report, it doesn't stand up as a great science fiction story. I'm sure Minority Report will get way more play for me. Still, for sheer "Oh my Gandhi, check this out" value, there is nothing better out there.

I received the BR within a day or so of the official release date from Amazon. My local "Mom & Pop" video rental store had the regular DVD three or four days before the official release date.

About this BR: Plays flawlessly on my mainstream, "nothing to write home about" BR player. The picture and sound quality is superb!

What are the odds if I buy a cheap brand new Blu ray player that it will play Avatar?

My friend has the BR version and let me borrow the dvd (since I obiously don't have br with my analog tv). It looked and sounded great, the movie however was too much for me to handle. So many cliches it made me sick. If you're watching for the visual and sound effects, its a good buy... But there are much, much better movies that have a similar story (dances with wolves, last samarui).

On a side note, my buddy had me watch the first 10 min of the BR version and it looks amazing, almost 3d like. Sooner or later I'll finally be able to afford HDTV:(
