Re: Polk Monitor 12
You should never, ever use silicone to seal the inside of a speaker cabinet. Silicone releases an acidic gas as it cures, which can damage exposed metal parts, steel, copper etc., on the drivers and crossover. In addition, silicone doesn't really adhere well to wood or wood products. You sould always use either a water based caulk, or construction adhesive. Solvent based construction adhesives will work as well, but the adhesive must be fully cured, and cabinet must be fully ventilated before installing all the drivers, and buttoning it up.I have a pair of monitor 12's. was able to curb some of the boomyness by resealing the box with silicone, anding internal bracing to stiffen the cabinet. added more stuffing. mortite caulking cord for the drivers. recapping the crossovers helped a ton. On the sealing of the cabinet, the mw have a vented dust cap so you will never have a truly sealed box. I use these for the mains in my HT set up. I like the clarity of the midrange and high's I get from these speakers. (the recaping helped with that alot, before the recap they where a little muddy in the midrange).

Re: 1937 Philco Radios
It's very important to determine if the radio has a "hot" chassis:

Re: Review: Benchmark AHB2 Amp
Although I haven't asked Benchmark it appears the AHB2 is a fully balanced differential amp design, meaning not going to run Polk L800 speakers. The design is what makes it have such a good S/N ratio.
Yes it is a fully balanced differential amp. Too bad it's not a good match for the L800's. That would have been awesome!
As far as the design goes I believe it was an 8yr project with THX & Benchmark engineers. All I can say is that they nailed it!!

Re: 1937 Philco Radios
I think Jesse made some recommendations in my thread about my tube stereo console as to how to clean those. I’d go check it out.

Re: Review: Benchmark AHB2 Amp
I understand the number of gain detents (clicks) to be about the same with the T/5X and the S/812. Around 40 if I remember right but mine are usually somewhere between one quarter and one third only. I remember I had to drop the gain on mine quite a bit during the break in period which was a bit annoying when the system would sound slightly off every week for the first three months.
It is a nice feature to have on the AHB2 to provide for different gain and a professional recording studio focused feature. Parasound tends to have a continuous gain knob on their two channel amps with the best setting at full on. That's kind of a relic from their original custom installer focus.
You are correct about the Parasound, the A21+ has gain settings for both channels. I found that the highest setting was what I preferred. The AHB2 has 3 settings (low, med, hi). Benchmark recommends the low setting for RCA, med for XLR & hi for upstream pro gear. Talking with Rory at Benchmark he recommended the med setting for the best match with my pre & AVR. He also said to experiment with all 3 to see what worked best. The recommended med setting was spot on.
I know 3 clicks of volume decrease on a REL might seem like a lot but that decrease really dialed it in perfectly. I don't run it hot at all, just enough to fill in the bottom end without drawing attention to it's self.

Re: Post a picture.....any picture...part deux...
Speaking of rescue, we rescued this cute little kitty the 18th. I'm returning from the mail box around 7:30pm, its dark out, 10f degrees, and it latches onto me in the garage. It scared me.
Called non emergency police, they notified animal control who picked it up. It had a chip and the owners were notified and they picked it up.

Re: You’re doing it wrong…
Heck most of the apartments I lived in as a young fellow had basements and I had access to them. My second apartment in 77 I turned the basement into my first man cave-listening room. It was a walk in basement complete with a beer fridge, Marantz receiver with large Advents, exercise equipment and a spot for my motorcycle and all my tools.
We did live in a place for a couple years later on that was on a slab. Those floors being ice cold in the winter was one of my least favorite memories of that place.
