You can use acoustic treatments behind an esl type speaker to subdue or cancel the rear wave and have them closer to rear wall. I did that with Innersound Mk II's for years before replacing them with the Salk SS8's.

New Monitor 7s in the house!
Picked up a super clean pair of Monitor 7s from Goodwill a few days ago with stands and some old apature speaker wire. I was impressed whoever made the stands even included inserts for spikes. Plugged in and tested them against the upgraded SDA-2BTLs and while they certainly don't sound as good they sound way better than I expected. It's tempting to upgrade the crossovers and tweeters as they might fit our smaller room a bit better than the SDAs until we get a larger space.

Sept. 5th on stone ledge of my home, early evening, west facing into sun.
It stayed in the same spot for almost two hours.
