I mentioned in a for-sale thread about a month ago that I was waiting on the delivery of a SonoruS ATR10 R2R and that I would provide some details and pictures once it arrived. Well, it has now been in my system for about two weeks. When I first received it, I had it sitting on a temporary rack in front of the two racks while I went through setup, testing, and trials. I'm happy to report that it now has a permanent home on top of the first rack.
This source is amazing.
The level of detail, imaging, and texture I'm hearing from the ATR10 are not something I have heard in my system to date.
With the purchase, I was also able to secure several premium titles on 15 IPS tape. My goal was to get a broad spectrum of music so I could evaluate what works and sounds best on the format. The initial titles were:
• Pink Floyd — The Wall
• Pink Floyd — Dark Side of the Moon
• Pink Floyd — Wish You Were Here
• Pink Floyd — Animals
• The Beatles — Abbey Road
• Grover Washington Jr. — Winelight
• Nirvana — Unplugged
• Michael Jackson — Thriller
• Nine Inch Nails — Pretty Hate Machine
• Kraftwerk — Minimum-Maximum
I then ordered three additional titles from Rhino High Fidelity:
• Fleetwood Mac — Fleetwood Mac
• ZZ Top — Tres Hombres
• Yes — Yes
I've now listened to every tape, with several getting multiple spins. There have been some real standouts. Winelight, Animals, Thriller, Minimum-Maximum, The Wall, and Pretty Hate Machine have all been particularly impressive.
Thriller is a great example. That album is already a fantastic production, but hearing it on the ATR10 is something else.
Minimum-Maximum was another one that really surprised me. The sense of space and imaging was excellent.
Overall, I am extremely happy with the purchase and with what I'm hearing from the ATR10. It has definitely become a serious source in my system, and I plan to continue expanding my tape catalog in the future.

I can’t remember what Pink Floyd title we listened to at SWAF, but it was unreal. I’m not a big fan of NIN, but what we heard at SWAF was just absolutely fantastic. Since I’m very familiar with your integrated, somewhat familiar with your speakers, and have heard your source, I know you are in audio nirvana. So I sit down to listen tonight... I think this counts. Anyway, the best improvement I have made in the past couple weeks is killing off the damn cricket that has been messing with me for the past week or so. Tonight, the little basterd was hopping all across the soundstage in plain sight, daring me to take him out. I obliged him with a thick, heavy book and still he tried to get away. It took several more drops before I was able to subdue him but finally there will be no more unwanted frequencies injected into my listening session.The Gear... @SCompRacer - I had it hooked up to my NAS. I was still under 2 TB.
Did you every try it with an internal drive? When I used to run one, I found internal sounded slightly better than external. -

I’m really enjoying it. Have not played a record since I got it. Need to get back to the turntable! Listening to Kraftwerk now. Very interesting tape. While most may be going to digital, if you look at some of the best recordings even of more recent work, some of the very best are still recorded to tape. @Geoff4rfc That Polk Forum Snake River Audio cable demo enlightened me to just how significant of an impact a quality power cable can make. To be completely honest, before I heard it with my own ears, I doubted the impact a PC could make. The AQ storm series is quite good. I'm using the Blizzard PC on my power conditioner, preamp, subwoofer, and power amp. The SQ difference from the Pangea power cables was significant.Enjoying the journey while never attaining the destination.

I don't doubt that. I have a Pangea cord and it has never....well, let's just say that it sounded horrible in every application I have ever used it in. I do not get why people buy from this brand. It was a complete waste of time and money for me.
I am not surprised at all on that one. The difference between that and the SRA PC should have been significant for you.

I can tell you with complete certainty that almost every single PC I have can make a subtle, to horrendous, to stunning difference in the sound. You don't need to take my word for it. All you have to do is listen to the folks that tried it.
I now have the Takshaka's from Jonny. The demo cable was only a portion of what I am experiencing now (in comparison). Now that most of the most critical paths are Takshaka's? This makes the PC even more noticeable.
I have boxes of PC's. This isn't spoken from conjecture. This is spoken from experience. If you want, I can send you the Pangea free of charge (you cover shipping) and you can see/hear for yourself. TBT, it wouldn't even be worth the cost of shipping.

One other thing, Bill. It depends on the system's caliber, what it offers, how it is set up, dialed in and most importantly, the room acoustics. Being under the influence has NOTHING to do with it. This is based upon years/decades of listening, both stone cold sober, and under the influence.
I didn't appreciate the insinuation on that one, to be completely honest.

@newbie308 yeah man, I was in the same camp as you...."it's a power cable, it transfers electricity from the wall to your gear, go blow smoke up someone else's skirt" lol. I've never had the caliber of gear to be able to make a distinction between cables, and this DAC??? I was also running Pangea, love em! Had the AC-14XL MKII XL from the DAC to the AVP, great shielding in that cable. Then, put in the Monsoon and now, I'm the smoke blower lol.
Sounds like you have the Blizzard in the right places!! I'm running Pangea AC 9SE MKII Signature on my amps and power conditioner. My next move is to put the Niagara 5000 in primarily for the 2ch set up, then, I'll look at the Blizzard for the XPA-DR2 to get that last bit of refinement. Right now, the 9SE is doing a great job plugged into the PQ 707, the 5000 is where the difference is going to be!!! IF....you get tired of one of those Blizzard PC's...well.....

I have a pretty modest system by Tom standards, if not most of the members here, but the Snake River demo opened my eyes to what power cables can do. Get your read on in that thread. I did not bite, but I was enlightened by participating. One of my top 2 or 3 experiences since joining this forum.
