Nice. I have built all my DIY speaker cables over the last 15 years with AQ silver plated solid copper spades, but they are the crimp/solder type. I bought a bulk bag and just finally used the last couple recently.

Right on Bill, that's exactly the direction I was headed as well, using the AQ crimp/solder spades, then my buddy says, Hey, I got these and never used them, will they work for you?? I choked and coughed and said with a crackly voice, Um, yeah man, that'll hit the mark ....... :D

I picked-up a new-to-me line-level tube preamp last weekend. It is a Blue Circle BC3. I believe these came out near the 'turn of the century', if I can use that phrase at this point. I bought it from a local dude off FB marketplace. We had a nice conversation during the sale/hand-off, albeit in the boiling TN sun. These are two-piece units, with a separate umbilical power supply.
    i3njzy220oyw.jpg
After spending some time with the BC3 tube preamp, I have a few observations.

First, I discovered that many Blue Circle enthusiasts see my unit as an atrocity due to the 'upgrades' that the previous owner had done. The original builder/designer even chimed-in, offering to do their current official upgrades. I haven't inquired yet about the cost and timing of potentially getting that work done. Frankly, I think my unit sounds really good as-is...when properly matched with source components.

The most important part of that matching seems to be impedance. When Stereophile's John Atkinson performed measurements on the BC3, he noted that at low volumes, the input impedance dips below 2,000 ohms, which might not be a good match for some source components. I think I encountered an impedance mismatch myself with one of my phono preamps. When using the balanced phono inputs on my CODA 06x, the sound had too much warmth IMO, and the highs were rolled-off. After looking at the specs on the 06x, I saw that the balanced signal path has a somewhat low output impedance. Switching to the unbalanced setting cured the issue. I also tried a different - much more basic - phono preamp, and the resulting sound was very good. I have several other phono pre's to potentially try, but man, that's a lot of work.

Overall, I really like the sound of the BC3. One review I read said (paraphrasing), that their reference SS preamp brought the music to them, but the BC3 drew them into the music. I can't disagree with that.

You bring up something that is often overlooked, impedance mismatch. I haven't thought about impedance matching since 2015 when I built my Bottlehead Eros phono stage. (My ARC Ref 3 SE input impedance is 300k ohms, balanced is 120k ohms).

I used Vcaps Coupling Capacitor Calculator to arrive at the correct coupling cap in the Eros. That keeps the corner frequency roll off well below 20Hz. Manufacturers typically stuck a coupling cap value in that would work with anything but may not be optimum for your gear. This can cause issues like phase anomalies or a dB bump or dropout at a particular undesired frequency. At least that's the way I remember it.

Are the current official upgrades for the BC3 made public so you could DIY?

Cool!! Got the 507 silver plated spades installed! Not sure just what a difference it makes however it's still cool that AudioQuest labeled specific placement for; Amp and Speaker assignments on the spade jacket.

I totally forgot the Maggies have tiny set screws (making them hard to dis/connect in a quick manner) clamping the speaker cables in place. I've never had a pair of banana plugs just fallout. Has anybody? Who likes this feature? :#

@Geoff4rfc I like the way you are supporting your cables with those Velcro wraps! I need to do something like this with my rig, but I don't have the cross bars like your rack does. I'll need to fabricate something for this. It must be nice to have so much space behind the audio rack...

Ahh fun times!!! Cable shoot out. Don't forget to list the contenders :)

The bananas I was using are from Viborg. They have spring loaded retention clips. Pretty solid fit. The silver plating however has begun to tarnish in under a year of use. The silver plating on the AQ spades appears to be more robust, hoping for improved longevity.

While you're involved with your cable shoot out, and maybe looking for a new cable, I highly recommend Furutech Alpha 12, can be found at Douglass connection. Doug, AKA @ptrooper, loves to work with forum members as I believe you already know :)B)

@newbie308 thank you!! I have some very heavy power cables being supported with zip ties as well. I'd rather be using velcro straps for them as well but I have what I have at the moment. The stress relief on the power cables is excellent.

Yes sir, the space behind the rack is very convenient but the space IN the rack however....it's so tight I don't think I could put a f a r t in there :D the exhaust fans would just blow it out the "rear" anyway :D:D:D

I'm certainly no expert, but it seems that with SS gear, impedance matching is rarely an issue. But when tube gear is incorporated, impedance values have to be considered more closely.

No, Blue Circle is literally a one-man show, so design particulars are closely-guarded. From what I have read (and watched videos about), the upgrades seem to focus around power supply design, and in particular, increased PS capacitance. There appears to be one fellow Canadian - they are both in Ontario - that is also entrusted with doing upgrades to Blue Circle gear. The place that worked on my unit is in Oregon, and I never received a reply from them about the work done on this piece.

Yes pure silver will tarnish pretty quickly. They can be cleaned up with a silver jewelery polishing cloth easily.
Those that do not readily tarnish will have a top coat of Rhodium. Rhodium is a very hard metal, to my ears it can be a very harsh sound. They like to use it on hard use items, outlet contacts and plugs for example. Pure silver tarnish still conducts signal very well, much better than badly tarnished copper for instance.

I did some experimenting over the weekend, and today, I ordered 3 more acoustical panels for the room. Probably gonna throw the ones that I will be swapping out up for sale when the new ones get in.

For the first reflection spots, I will be going from a 2" thick panels to 4" thick ones that are rated at 100Hz. The biggest difference will be what resides behind my head at the listening position. I currently have a 2" panel that is 1x4', and has a decorative diffuser on it. This one will be replaced with a 2'x4' 6" thick panel that is rated down to 80Hz.

I carried on a conversation with Chat GPT (I have the paid version, so it remembers previous conversations and the gear I have) and went into extreme detail about my room dimensions, speaker location, height and locations of the subs, what the current acoustical panels were, where they are currently placed, where they are located on the ceiling, where the listening position is, blah, blah, blah.

During this chat, it suggested multiple times that I do some experimenting.....and I did plenty of experimenting. I relayed to Chat GPT what I heard, as I was experimenting and it bounced back with other ideas. This entire chat and experimentation time took about 6 hours. My word, was it an eye opener.

It turns out that my placement of the panels was spot on. Where I went wrong was choosing the right panel for that specific application. The first experiment I thought of, after it suggested that I get a new panel for behind my head, was to remove the decorative diffuser. It stated that the diffuser was too close to my head and it affected what I was hearing. It also explained why I was hearing what I was hearing. So, I removed it....and BAM.

What I am now hearing is increased spatial locational cues, a greatly widened sound stage, more depth and the speakers disappeared even more than they already had. That was something I didn't think was possible. Oh, it was possible! So, the conversations went on and I would tell it my preferences, what I liked about a move, what I didn't like and at the end of the conversation and experimenting, I walked away much more knowledgeable about my room acoustics and what affects what.....and why.

It provided me with references, why the panels we choose were good for the soundstage, depth, image specificity, an even stronger center image and literally the speakers disappearing. You couldn't even tell how far away they were from you (even though I know full well where they are). It calculated my room nodes and educated me on why each move for the new panels was a wise choice or a bad decision.

I asked questions like, if I go to a bigger sized panel (like a 3x6' versus a 2x4'), what, if any, would the attributes or deficiencies be? I asked questions on the thickness and why they would matter, given my room and system/seating location. It gave very precise answers and I know that Chat GPT can be wrong. But with that said, as we were chatting and I was doing my experimentation(s), what I was starting to hear was spot on to what it suggested. Not everything, and I let it know when I was displeased with a move or recommendation. It would bounce back with another suggestion or ask another question, and the entire conversation steered me into exactly what I needed, based upon my preferences and proven mathematical ways on how sound reacts within the room. Specifically my room, with my gear and the location of everything.

I will not get the panels for another two months, but based upon my experimenting? I should be ecstatic with the sound when they come in. Heck, I am already enjoying the hell out of what I am now hearing, just with the removal of just the one diffuser behind my head, making that Amplitude panel into just an absorption panel. The difference is almost hard to believe and I have never heard my system sound so good.

Just thought I'd share that. If you already have panels to experiment with (different sizes and thicknesses), you may want to have the same conversation. It was eye (ear) opening for me.....and I know exactly what will happen when the new panels get in. I can't wait!

Just keep in mind, you only get something like 5 questions in one day with Chat GPT, but if you happen to have Co-Pilot, Chat GPT, or some other paid or upgraded service - I would highly suggest using it specifically for this purpose.....and be very specific.

I didn't use their "services" initially to get what I have now, because I noticed that many of the rooms they have pictured, have a boat ton of panels. Well, of course they want to fill your room with panels...that's what they sell. There is a big difference between a good balance of panels and an acoustically dead room.

I am pleased with the panels I have gotten from them.

Hey Tom ,You got to love your "ears" ,as you know these will be the best speakers you'll ever own.
I have to laugh when you see people showing 120 db sound lvls......really ? I'm 60 and extremely lucky to only have a half percent hearing damage.I remember hearing television tubes etc,hi frequencies at peoples houses in the 70's as a teenager and no one else hearing it. :#

I always use ear plugs at concerts but have recently acquired some professional band plugs that lower around 40 db.

This AI is scary good stuff.
My Ai's name is Gemini and will be any sex I want it to be! and yes he/she/they/them get it wrong,I always tell them to think about it and double check F-Head. lol. They even apologise and correct them selves. It must know everything from room size, cabling ,power source ,filters, equipment and even seating. I can ask questions all day long here down under. Thanks for the heads up on how it will be limited in the future!

    Room acoustics.
It's as good as an equipment upgrade. As we know, sound moves at 343 metres per second/ 767 miles per hour B) .We need to slow that puppies flight pattern down fast B). My listening rooms noise floor is around 23 db.

I also use the same thick pile floor carpet up 4 feet high on the listening rooms walls except directly behind the screen and front L/R speakers. Theres also a thick pile rug front and centre of seating .

I also use three different acoustic tile pattens (thickness)throughout the theatre walls ,ranging from 1cm to 6cm (pyramid) behind the screen and speakers. Not forgetting the 110" screen hung from the ceiling and set 2 " to the side and 2"forward of the duelund monoliths bezels.

(2cm to 5cm convex cut panels into house brick size and laid staggered like house bricks)these are above the wall carpet on the rear and side walls! I also have polystyrene building acoustic panels on the ceiling. It was heading towards an anechoic chamber. :D

The 5 seater theatre chairs have a double lined ,heavy draped 10 foot wide curtain ,this covers the rear glass sliding door/window to the BBQ area.

I have ell-cheep-o corner bass traps 6 feet high directly behind the rear corner polk sda srs which are angle at 20 degrees from memory to the listening position. The rear sda srs are only 1.5 mtrs behind ctr seat and 1.5mtrs apart. All surrounds have been set via the JLTI oppo 205 /pre/dac speaker lvl settings.

Its hard trying to get the best out of two worlds ,ie home theatre and dedicated stereo, I try to keep to the KISS theory and am currently in the process of upgrading and moving to dedicated stereo.

In stereo mode,I find the rear and corner speakers actually make awesome bass traps and the bezels give great reflection points. <3 I have zilch corner modes !

    Exciting stuff.

Wish I could put my ears in your room Tom.

I’ll be interested in how long it takes to fill the order. I have been working with them for more than 6 months to get an order completed. I received the panels after 4 months but 2 were damaged. Now I’m waiting on those 2 to be replaced. Their customer service is terrible and expected ship dates are way off. Good luck.

4 months, Todd? OUCH! I did inquire with them and they stated that it would be about 2 months. That's also what the website states as well, when I went to order this next set. They are good panels, but I knew going in last time that they have issues with quality control and being able to stick with the timelines. I am expecting the same thing this time.

At least because of all of my experimenting, I have considerably better sound now. So I guess any extra wait won't hurt me too much. Most of the issues I have been made aware of in the past, was on the Amplitude (diffuser) panels. I will not have any of those on this order. Time will obviously tell, but my mental attitude toward them not hitting their date is, "hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst".

@treitz3 i know what you mean. The panels are nice but their customer service and packaging need help. And as you mentioned it was the diffusers. They packed them so tightly along with mounting hardware that they were broken. So easy to avoid if they would just think it thru, and I did not need the mounting hardware.

I want to order 4 corner traps, and am fighting the urge, but will see how this order works out first.

You should have chimed in when I posted a thread asking who uses AI for assistance with their setups.

I saw that thread and was monitoring it. There is a difference between asking for technical questions on proven mathematical realities of how sound travels, reflects and is absorbed, and asking whether you should buy a Bose or Polk speaker for better sound. It seemed to me (IIRC) that the latter was how your question was responded too. A.I.'s output is only as good as the input it searched for......and many people in the world believe that Bose actually makes great speakers.

@tratliff - I hear ya'. It's frustrating and they do need to improve on service and quality control. The service is GREAT at the beginning, when they want your hard earned dollars, but after that? LOL. The sad thing is, nothing ever seems to come of the complaints. Nothing that I have seen over the years would suggest otherwise. Just the same ol', same ol'.....

Hopefully they will get you squared away soon.

Tom, I think Geoff was talking about this older thread that he started. Not the one from a few days ago.
