Right now I am planning my next pair of speakers to be a pair of L600s ( which seem difficult to find) or a pair of SDA 2Bs or 3Cs. After a crossover upgrade on these would be my price limit. As far as non Polk speakers go, I would say Focal Aria Evo used or Usher Dancer mini 1 used of course.

I just moved a pair of L600s, in the boxes, to my house from my dad’s estate. Along with a bunch of other gear. Looking forward to getting it setup and being able to spend some quality time listening. This will be my secondary system located in my office.

A fair limit is when you can no longer hug your speakers.

It's hard to say, right now my mountain bike costs more than my speakers (even if purchased new). With teens taking over the basement I rarely get time to listen to anything or even watch something down there. I suppose when they get older I'll look into upgrading but I don't see a point upgrading something I don't use. So my extra cash goes towards bike parts not just for me but the family bikes.

I have a few hobby's myself that all cost a lot of money. Mountain biking I haven't been strongly into in a while but that could change, My Mountain bike is from 2004 and I would really like to get a new one. I like Specialized , Cannondale , GT and Trek. Santa Cruz bikes are nice, I kinda like all of them. Specialized seems very comfortable with the designs of their frames. I currently have a GT.

Shoot, you think audio is expensive, bikes and parts are nasty crazy. Bike tires almost the price if a car tire as an example

The guy that started GT bicycles was actually a professional drag racer named Gary Turner, his son Craig raced BMX and that's how the brand started. He used 4130 chromoly to build a BMX frame.

I use to work for a bike store back in 1982. I assembled bikes , made wheel repairs and sold them off the floor. I also was way into BMX back then and Gary Turner was a big deal back then. We also had a local track and a concrete curl for trick and the track was dirt racing. I had several GT bikes back then. Pro Performer, Mach 1 , I had the very first Pink Mach 1 when they hit the market. I had a Freestyle all GT bikes.

GT bikes isn't completely out of business, but to call it a shell of what it once was is an understatement.

It's sad. I used to drool over the Zaskar in the 90's...

Thankfully, you're spoiled for choice these days; Specialized, Transition, Trek, Santa Cruz, Ibis, Revel, Raaw...

My Transition Smuggler is just a silly good bike, mind-blowingly good if you're coming from a 2004'ish bike.

It's a hard pill to swallow when you spend $600+ on brakes for a MTB and really see what you're getting... :D :'(

Well, I guess, $8100. I still can't believe I spent that, but, they gave me $900 off on the speakers and $900 off on integrated, (all new in box). I am retiring this year and it is my "lifetime" system.

Home stereo gear yields the same irony as musical instruments: the older I get, the more $ I can afford to spend...but the worse I can hear/play to enjoy the equipment. That said, I have amassed a total of 9 Polk speakers over the years (see sig), almost all of which see daily use. I have attended a couple of (high-end) A/V shows since moving to Florida, and have actually seen/heard speakers that I would consider buying, but can't justify $20k+ (per pair) for speakers...so I continue to enjoy my (vintage) Polk Monitors.

    What's your limit on Speakers?

How far are you willing to go? Have you ever found a product that exceeded your expectations and then having you question IF you should go any further?

    Performance-wise I'm already there.

    Curious.

So Performance without limits, is based on decibels? Please do give context.

They are not only capable of more volume pressure levels than a human can tolerate, they also sound great with almost zero degradation & distoration as you crank them up. I've heard some owners say they are great for home theater but not so great for music. That hasn't been my experience. It takes some doing but once you get these things dialed-in, they are unbelievably awesome in either mode. Matthew Polk knew what he was doing when he decided to produce his ultimate flagship.

It can be tricky to get a modern AVR setup correctly with the SRT control centers. I run pre-amp RCA out to the subwoofer channels - not the sub output or LFE from the receiver. You want the full range going to the control center and let it dictate the cross-over.

Then the powered outputs (speaker wires) go to the high SDA section of the control center for the upper satellites. Contrary to what some may tell you, the speaker setting in the AVR should be set to "Large". If it is set to "Small" you lose all the midrange.

For music mode you only want to run stereo unless you have like a 5.1 Blu-Ray audio disc which I only have a couple. The audio mode in my Pioneer Elite ICE-powered AVR is set to "Extended Stereo" to provide 200 watts to each of the 4 front speakers.

The results are unbelievable. You have to be careful though. They sound so good you want to crank them up but if you aren't careful you can definitely damage your hearing.

My music listening setup uses 4 SRT speakers up front in stereo with dual PSW1200 subs (one at each side of the seating area). I was listening to Black Sabbath the other night with some friends. Totally-seismic!

My total SRT setup is as follows:
    • 4 SRT Main Speakers up front (2R & 2L) with 2 control centers
    • 2 SRT Center speakers
    • 4 f/x1000 surrounds (2 at the sides and 2 in the rear) - The side speakers are set to "Dipole" & The rears are set to "Bipole"
    • 2 PSW1200 subs at each side towards the rear

At least that's what the setup will be when I'm finished re-organizing everything. Right now I'm using the stereo setup. Movies still sound pretty-good in the stereo setup too but they are totally-awesome in the 10.2 surround setup. I'm building some speakers stands for the surrounds and a new cabinet for the center speakers as well as new wires since my room has changed. I may go in-wall with the wires too.

Just when I start talking smack I think I might have a "rattle" starting from one of my SRT subs. I'm going to have to dig a little deeper tomorrow but I may end-up removing one or two drivers again and see about getting some repair work done. It's been about 10-12 years since I last had them repaired by Polk. I don' think getting them repaired by Polk is an option anymore though.

I have a lot of NOS spare parts for these SRTs but sub drivers aren't one of them. They are very special 2 Ohm drivers and there isn't anything out there to replace them with that I know of. Repair is about the only option. They are definitely worth it though.

Well I think I dodged a bullet. After digging deeper into the "rattle" I was hearing from one of my SRTs I found it was coming from the upper satellite cabinet. One of the feet had come slightly unscrewed somehow and all I had to do was tighten it up and the rattle went away.

I found it by turning off the speakers on my AVR, since the SRT subs are connected to the pre-out RCAs on the AVR running through the SRT control panel I could listen to all of them with just the subs on. That helped me narrow it down.

These things are freakin' seismic man. They vibrate the entire house. In my previous house I had them in the basement with a carpeted concrete floor and didn't have near the amount of rattles as I do now. I heard one coming from a cabinet in the kitchen and had to move some dishes around that were vibrating against each other.

Everything is back to normal now though! Freeman E. Still's (Polk Audio) repair job he did to my drivers has held up great.

Always nice when you eliminate those rattles.

Bought new a pair of Kappa 8’s.
On some music, certain Enya songs, I’d hear a rattling from down at the woofer on the left speaker. Took the woofer out and found nothing.
Started looking at the crossover and one of my inductors only had one loose rivet connecting it to the crossover board.
A little metal set and the rattle was gone.

Came from the factory like that.
