    Mooney M-18 Mite
    Mooney M-18 Mite first flew on May 17, 1947, as a low-cost, single-seat general aviation aircraft designed by Al Mooney. The M-18 was a low-wing, single-seat monoplane. The aircraft was intended to be marketed towards fighter pilots returning from the war. A total of 283 M-18s of differing variants between factories in Wichita, Kansas, and Kerrville, Texas. Being that the M-18 was single-seat, the market proved to be slim.

    Mooney Porsche PFM
    In 1987 a prototype Porsche Mooney PFM (Porsche Flugmotoren) flew around the world on a proof-of-concept flight. The Mooney PFM was years ahead of its time starting with the overhead cam (OHC) 911 engine.

    The Porsche Mooney had a six-cylinder Porsche 911 engine rated at 217 bhp. That engine was 3.2 liters, which is about 195 cubic inches and would cruise at 158 knots using 10.6 gallons per hour. Porsche got more power out of a smaller engine by spinning it faster, 5300 rpm vs. 2700 for the Lycoming engine.

    Porsche decided to get out of the airplane business and said they wanted their engine back. Porsche gave the owners two choices. They would subsidize the conversion to a Continental aircraft engine or buy the plane back.

    In addition to Mooney, the engines were used in other makes including Cessna, Robin, Extra, Socata, and Airship Industries blimp. In total about 80 engines were produced. Porsche grabbed all the engines and spare parts they could and destroyed them.

    My wife saw some feathers falling from a tree at the back of our yard. She stepped in to tell me she was seeing a Hawk feeding by using our binaculars we keep on the back porch. I saw it too and got my camera to catch the gruesome scene.

    It was a Cooper's Hawk. We think it caught a rock dove. We always had 2 doves hanging together. A half hour later, we saw a lone dove under our feeders. We fear the worst. :'(
