I'd say that description better befits the Wollensak T-1500 and its kin!
They sold gazillions of these over a long period of time -- they're built like little tiny tanks, and they were not inexpensive.

(There was one of those in the basement for a long time, too... but it was in pretty sorry shape and I even abandoned the notion of harvesting the power amplifier out of it for something else).

I think just about every high school in America had a few of the Wollensaks in their audio/visual departments.

I can't say I remember a protracted Wollensak discussion before.
As @SeleniumFalcon notes - the Wollesaks were pretty ubiquitous in American education for quite some time. Crown bragged that their tape machines were "built missionary tough". Wollensaks were "built language lab tough"!
Since we find ourselves on the topic, now seems like a good time to note that the sturdy Wollensak cassette transport formed the mechanical heart (or is it just entrails) of both the Advent 201 cassette deck and a Heathkit cassette deck of roughly the same era.

I once found an Advent 201 at the dump, but all the rubber bits had transmogrified into sticky black goo, so I was loath to even attempt to rehabilitate it. I hate working on cassette transports!

Note that Heathkit wasn't as cheap as Henry Kloss, letting their customers have two meters!

Somehow I was aware of the Wollensak name in grade school because I can remember hearing the O'Jays song "She Used To Be My Girl" and rhyming or substituting it in a part of the song where they sang something similar.

Another Advent piece of trivia, Nakamichi built the Advent 200 cassette deck which was also the first deck to use Dolby B.

Nakamichi built a lot of early cassette decks. At least one early harman/kardon deck (CAD-4 and/or CAD-5) was (ostensibly) Nakamichi OEM.
