cloudy here all last night, so no aurora
pine siskin on the left and indigo bunting on the right
Fun fact about indigo buntings. They are not actually blue. They just look like they are.
https://abcbirds.org/bird/indigo-bunting/A male Indigo Bunting in breeding plumage is a glorious symphony of shimmering blues, turquoises, and purples. But these beautiful colors are illusory: Like the iridescence of hummingbirds and the blue plumage of other species such as Eastern Bluebird, the male Indigo Bunting owes its glorious appearance to an optical trick — the diffraction of light through its feathers. In poor lighting, the bunting's glorious colors disappear and it becomes a plain, dark-colored finch.
Trickery.

@BlueBirdMusic @PSOVLSK - are these photos of Auroras? Did you guys know about this? I just saw an article that said this is a thing happening right now, talking about visibility as far south as Alabama.I disabled signatures. -

Yes, it is. I knew nothing about it either. We just happened to be sitting outside last night or we would have missed it. I thought it was much cooler than the eclipse…and lasted a lot longer.Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.-John Wooden -
^^^^ I was in Auburn Maine last night & the sky was clear & I looked to the west/s.west (over your way) & I could see the light rays. It was cool. Had it been clearer over your way I may have seen quite the show. Iirc it was around 10pm & 2am when I viewed it. I enjoyed what I did seeRandy-Maine

That is their new location. I think the company was sold years ago and the name changed to modernize. They used to be located on Danville Corner Road in Auburn. We knew the former owner.
Here is where they were located for decades:

My bricks that I built my house came from Danville. I was across the road at the truck stop last night. You know the area I take itRandy-Maine

Actually, I haven't been there since the late 70s.

Those are auroras.
Several days ago the sun had a Coronal Mass Ejection that blew $- hit mega tons of plasma our way
Supposed to have been the biggest CME in the last 75 (?)
years with the equivalent energy of something like a Billion atomic bombs.
.....that's a lot btw for those using the metric systemSal Palooza -
Woh woh woh, this is supposed to be a family friendly forum! You can't just go around talking about CMEs.
And since when did you acquire interest, skills, and knowledge in sients?

@msg - The solar storm that caused the auroras has been in news stories for a week or so. I read and listened to several of them and knew it was going to happen, but not the extent of what occurred. Tennessee was thought to be the most southern state where visible.
I have known about the Northern Lights for most of my life and never expected to see anything like them. In Georgia, the auroras occurred all around north Georgia and all the way southeast to Tybe Island close to Savannah.
Those pictures I posted were taken by my cousin about 50 miles west of Atlanta away from the city lights, and in the country. As a kid, I used to enjoy the sky not bothered by city or town lights."Sometimes you have to look to the past to understand where you are going in the future"

I first heard of Jackie Stewart by looking at Aurora® slot car sets in the local Zayre® store as a child.

Northern Lights (NL) 2 nights ago....really awesome! Couple of years ago I visited my son/DIL when they were stationed at Fairbanks, AK, and never saw the light show. Had to wait until the "NL's 2024 North American Tour...Lower 48". LOL
Inland PNW. We used a light pollution map to find an area 20 minutes outside of our city for the best view. https://www.lightpollutionmap.info/#zoom=5.66&lat=47.4681&lon=-118.3720&state=eyJiYXNlbWFwIjoiTGF5ZXJCaW5nUm9hZCIsIm92ZXJsYXkiOiJ3YV8yMDE1Iiwib3ZlcmxheWNvbG9yIjpmYWxzZSwib3ZlcmxheW9wYWNpdHkiOjYwLCJmZWF0dXJlc29wYWNpdHkiOjg1fQ==
Quick stop by Dairy Queen for Blizzards and off to see the show. Used my Samsung phone camera in manual mode where I was able to adjust aperture and shutter speed. Best pics taken when I laid on the ground facing up, rested the phone on the brim of my hat and right up next to my forehead. Used hands and brim as a tripod. Quite the funny sight I was.
Hopefully, the animated GIF's upload properly and you can see them.....

Photo from the fairly recent Munich hifi show.
I have a funny feeling this link won't make it through Vanilla-filtration, but I'm game to try.
