Well, my long exposure skills are rusty, but there were lots of fireflies ("lightning bugs", in Baltimore parlance) last night. I spent some time trying to document the scene -- with meh results. :|

I may try again tonight, depending on conditions.

My neighbor and I were out talking a few nights ago and saw 1 Lightning bug.

We haven't seen any for many years.

We used to have a lot of them 30 years ago.

Now this year is a year for Silk Spiders again. The webs are plentiful everywhere. :#

I was shocked at the first night in the current house 5 years ago.
Fireflies were everywhere. We back up to the woods.
So we see all sorts of critters too. we even have turtles out wandering
around the yard sometimes. I could live without the snakes though.

As usual, the piccies don't quite do justice to the display we were treated to last night. :|
I may have better photos that I haven't gotten through yet. I did take a bunch. :#

I have to admit the firefly pics are really cool Doc! We don't have them here. One thing I miss about rural Iowa is the warm summer rains, thunderstorms and fireflies.

one more from last night :) It was very windy last night. Not so many flittin' around. Probably past the peak now -- we'll see what tonight brings.

Longer exposure at large aperture -- the focus last night was a bit "off" :/

That cluster of light near the center of the image is in our raspberry patch. :)

I love seeing 'em and it's fun and somewhat challenging to photograph them, too.
The enzyme system ("luciferase") that powers their light converts biochemical energy (from adenosine triphosphate, the fuel that cells use for energy) to light. Seliger (who was one of my profs) & McElroy at Hopkins sorted out the biochemistry in the 'sixties. Today, lucifease is used as a tool in molecular biology. It's easy to find things if they light up as part of the assay! :)
