Working on a 7.2 plus? Setup. Kind of debating if I should use the 702 or 703 for heights/Atmos, the others will end up being rears. Wut says yooz?

Look into SVS for rears, heights and others.... the fronts and center should all be matched ... the rest are secondary and the SVS stuff is solid....

What fits best in your room? Which speakers will be the easiest to place? 702's are wide but lower profile for wall mounting, but not very aim-able. 703's stick out further but narrower width may fit on a shelf better and/or using a wall mount bracket can more easily aim them toward the sweet spot.

I haven't hooked my 702 rears up yet and I don't have 703's but past experience with similarly laid out speakers suggests the 702's would have a wider more dispersed sound filed where the 703 would be more localized and direct. In my room dispersed is better as they're only about 6-8' behind and above my head. In a larger room where the rears are futher back it may help to have a more directed sound from a 703 tweeter pointing at you.

Ultimately, what others said, experiment. :)

Unfortunately expermentation requires holes in the walls. Probably the most practical thing to do is use the 703's for heights. I will have 702's for surrounds and rears, should be interesting.

Get creative. Use a couple ladders, tall furniture, something to place them roughly in the spots you want. No drilling necessary.

What do yooz say is the optimum height for 702's?

Tweeters at 2' above ear level.

No hard and fast rules with placement, rarely does a perfect room with no compromise exist. If they're somewhere behind and to the sides of you it will work, then let auto calibration do the rest. Don't overthink the surrounds. Worry more about your front stage placement. ;)

Surround placement can make or break the surround experience especially if there is more then one person listening.
So for the surround speakers Ideally the Tweeter should be as close to 72 inches off he floor as possible. This gives you the best overall experience with generations of movie soundtracks. Today Atmos tries to tell you just above ear level and at one point at ear level. Well that doesn't work at all as if someone on the left side close to the speaker their head blocks some of the sound. Who the hell wants that?
Surround back placement should be about 4 feet or so apart and at the exact same height as the surrounds. This gives you the best movement and realism. You can go wider depending on your room. The Dolby guides are close to right here.

No doubt, I got lucky, my speakers are in near perfect positions and I get to sit smack in the middle of them. It's amazing. Blows away every theater I've been in.

Afterburnt, if you're stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to placement you'll be forced to compromise somewhere. You'll either have to run wires in a difficult spot, rearrange the room, get different speakers, or put up with less than optimal placement and compromise with auto calibration. Pick the compromise that fits/sounds best. Otherwise build a room, longer than it is wide, and put the screen/front stage on the narrow end, and pre-wire for everything and then some. :D

But really, don't overthink it. ;)

Is there much detriment to raising the rears a bit higher, just so I don't bump into them with my shoulders and should the surrounds be at the same height?

I do not think so. My rears (JBL610) were placed at 7'5" on my back wall angled down.

The 702's don't lend themselves to aiming.

So if you need to aim them the 703 is your answer. :)

After staring at the ceiling for days, I now see that I have no choice but to use the 703's for heights, besides they probably won't stay there anyway. Kind of a waste of 703's.
