Scary virus outbreak in China

This is from researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology and the University of Delhi:

"We found 4 insertions in the spike glycoprotein (S) which are unique to the 2019-nCoV and are not present in other coronaviruses. Importantly, amino acid residues in all the 4 inserts have identity or similarity to those in the HIV-1 gp120 or HIV-1 Gag. ... The finding of 4 unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV, all of which have identity/similarity to amino acid residues in key structural proteins of HIV-1 is unlikely to be fortuitous in nature"

This was published online at biorxiv.org.

Aside from these four inserts, the sequence of the nCoV virus was strikingly similar to the SARS virus. If this research is accurate, nCoV may be a genetic hybrid between SARS and HIV, and it's unlikely to have occurred naturally. In other words, it may be an engineered virus. Adding fuel to this speculation is the fact that many of those who have recovered from the initial symptoms may still test positive for the virus, indicating that the virus may remain active even after the symptoms are gone.

Imagine a virus as destructive as HIV that can spread from one person to another as easily as the cold or flu. Sounds like it would make a very effective biological weapon.

Another interesting fact... There is a virus research laboratory in Wuhan - the Wuhan Virology Institute. It is the only biosafety level 4 certified lab in China. When the lab was being certified in 2017 there were a number of scientists in the west that expressed concern that the lab might not adhere to established protocols, as a lab in Beijing had allowed the SARS virus to escape multiple times.

A final fact... China has begun using HIV drugs to treat the coronavirus.

The above are simply data points, but if there actual lines connecting them then it would certainly explain the extreme measures China has gone to in order to try to contain this virus.

    From the link itself -

Thailand Sees Good Result from Using Drug Mixture on Coronavirus

"Thailand found good results after using a mix of two antiviral drugs on a Chinese patient who was in a serious condition with the novel coronavirus, according to a health ministry briefing.

The patient’s condition significantly improved within 48 hours after the medical team decided to use antiviral drugs originally used for HIV and influenza in his treatment, Kriangsak Attipornwanich, a doctor at the state-owned Rajavithi Hospital who is treating the patient, told reporters at the Public Health Ministry briefing Sunday. The patient’s test result also turned negative, the doctor said.

Thailand has 19 confirmed cases for coronavirus infection - 11 are still hospitalized and the rest have returned home. The nation is also monitoring 311 possible cases in hospitals as of Sunday, according to a health ministry statement.

Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Chanvirakul said Sunday that the nation will repatriate more than 100 people from Wuhan on Feb. 4 after they pass medical screening in China. They will then be quarantined for 14 days after returning to Thailand.
    "

This was all that was written when I clicked onto the link. How did the aforementioned go from the virus to Politics?

To me, it seems the news from China is getting worse about this disease. However, it doesn’t seem to be affecting the rest of the world in either a medical or economical manner. I wonder if this is a temporary effect for the world, and at some point it is going to explode in other countries as it has in China.

Something like 90% of 1.3 billion people live on one side of China. These images put it into perspective. I imagine it would be much harder to contain something in this scenario. When I was in Japan, we went into an 8 story mall where people were shoulder to shoulder, couple thousand people packed into this mall, as an example.

Family friend just got back from visiting her family in China. She said they were isolated to just staying indoors at her family’s house. She got on the last plane allowed to leave before more restrictions were put in place that would have kept her there for a long while. I think that was Saturday or Sunday. Her boss called her Sunday night and said do not come into work and to work from home and call him next Monday.

Well, those with common sense knew this from the get go. Now it's just confirmed. Oh boy...

Chinese scientists take the virus from Canada, bring it to China and the first known case happened at a market only 20 miles from the level 4 bio-hazard where the strain was stored/mutated/researched? Yeah, I ain't buying the bat or snake theory.

I was just going to post the Taiwan News article about it.

    https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3871594

Also, @BlueFox this outbreak is not just a month old. China, of course, is saying different but sources outside China are saying that they first saw cases and deaths back in October/November. Ground zero is in a more rural area where healthcare is sparse and hard to get to.

Additionally, this coronavirus isn't new. It's been out there for a long time. Decades, at least. It was previously only seen in certain animals. In recent months, not only has it turned humans into a transmission vector but it's also changed infection vectors making it easier to propagate within the environment.

There two reasons that China is going hardcore on the quarantine. One is that they are likely fudging numbers and being dishonest about the infection rate and length of the outbreak but two, they are likely covering things up like they have in the past for whatever world stage political reason.

All I know is that I have to fly to Kentucky next week and back and I really don't want to be anywhere near an airport.

The Chinese doctor who tried to warn others about coronavirus has died. He is thought to be 34.

Probably for the best. He went against the state and if he would have survived more than likely he would have been "Re-Educated" or "Terminated"

    Natural causes?

Well if you call the coronavirus natural causes then yes we'll go with that.

Probably a grammatical error. as in Naturally, he died. As opposed to he died naturally. ;) (lost in translation perhaps)

This one is not from nature and genetically modified due to the pShuttle vector found in it's genome. This molecular method is used in a lab so that the virus can transfer between different host cell types.
