Good idea! Was thinking something like a threaded stand off, but I like your idea. Just seems like they should've secured it better. By contrast, the VTL sockets are rock solid.

Yesterday I had a chance to swap out the tubes on this baby. I replaced the 12AU7's with the Russian Mullards. After further inspection, the 12AX7 is what looks to be a NOS Mullard, made in England, so I kept it in place. More listening time needed of course, but I noticed an immediate improvement.

Still scratching my head as to why the previous owner had a mis-match of 12AU7's in there. Oh well, onward!

With the new 12AU7's, I noticed more detail, wider soundstage, and the bass dug a bit deeper than before. Very excited and happy about this particular tube roll!

Next step after some time I've got some other sets of vintage 12AU7's. Tube rolling is kinda fun!

Not only a tube mismatch but the previous owners fingers are in there! :o

So I finally had a chance to pop the hood off this baby. Well built chassis, with a solid 3/8" thick steel faceplate. No wonder why this thing weighs so much for a smaller form factor unit. I measured about 10 lbs!

    l1mskjbuophs.jpg
    y6o0pzokl3rx.jpg

Chassis is clean, with a tube compliment of 2 12AU7's, and a single 12AX7. As received, the 12AU7's are a Russian Electro-Harmonix, and a Yugoslavian Ei. Weird, different brands, but the getter shapes are different too. Gonna swap em out eventually for a matched pair.

The 12AX7 is a Mullard. Looks to be a re-issue.

Looks like a tube roll is in order!

One thing that struck me was one corner of the PCB was unsupported. When either removing or installing a tube, the board deflected significantly. So I put my finger in the corner to help stabilize it.

Back side of the piece. Now time to button it up and take her for a spin!

Hehe! I had to support the PCB because there was a lot of deflection when manipulating the tubes!

I'm glad you're digging the Russian Mullards. They are vastly different than the REAL Mullards made in Great Britain. The Russian Tubes all seem to be hit or miss, mostly miss in my experience.

i would go ahead and replace the nos mullard as you don't know how much wear and tear is on it. after listening to the reissue for a while then put the nos back in and see how you like it.

Yep. After I rolled in the 1950's CBS 5814's from @heiney9 this thing really came alive! Dramatic improvement in performance.

The Russian Mullards will be used for troubleshooting in the future, being that they are a known working tube.

More tube drama at Verb's house!

Got home from a hard day at work. Looking forward to playing the office rig. Turn the system on, and, nothing! WTH!

Visually check the usual, just to see if everything is in order. Yep the power light on the EAR comes on.

Switch to a different source (CD player), nothing. Aw man! Gotta be the pre.

All right, time to pull the EAR out. Luckily, I have at my disposal (sitting right on my desk!) a cute little Schitt SYS passive pre. Bought right here on the forum! Never plugged it in, but now is the time. Okay, connected the NS DAC, Amps, oh yeah, no power cord on the SYS!

Hey I'm getting sound! Great. For sure it's the pre. Not so great.

Time to open the hood. Okay, since now I have some experience, first thought is it's gotta be one or all of the tubes!

Pop the hood, swap out with known good tubes. This time I finally had a chance to use the Golden Lions 12AU7's from @joecoulson, and I have a Mullard re-issue 12AX7 that I purchased a while ago.

Downstairs on the secondary rig. I gotta tell ya, it's nice to have a second rig set up, just for troubleshooting purposes!

Swap all the tubes out, and voila! Everything seems to be working! Gonna let it play for a while downstairs, and rule out exactly which tube went bad.

Tube drama solved in less than an hour! And hardly any anxiety this time! I'm getting better at this! :)

And, I'll be able to do a head to head comparison between the EAR and the Schitt! Yeah I know, not even gonna be close! :)

Trust me unless you had something catastrophic it's never ALL the tubes. Do you know which tube came out of which socket to be able to better trouble shoot later? Your better approach I would think would have been to take top off when you had time and switch out each tube one at a time after it had been on a few minutes. Turning it off each time off course. Do not ask how I know that yanking out a tube under power makes that loud awful sound....you never want to hear. Did they all have a glow to them?

    Good luck Dave

Thanks Ivan. I'm gonna do some troubleshooting this weekend. I just wanted to ensure nothing else was wrong. Anxiety ya know! My plan is to swap back in the originals, one at a time, to identify the culprit! Bad tube! ;)
