Ok I'm dreaming. Local guy has an 834L Deluxe for sale. Not really in the market, but one can dream can he? :smile:

Yes I'm very happy with my VTL, it is by far the best preamp I've ever owned. I'm now a fan of the tube pre/SS power amp combo, as proclaimed on my other thread.

But as you all know, I'm wondering. It is a journey after all. Anyone have ears (pun intended) on this baby? I gotta say the chrome faceplate and gold knobs are, mesmerizing. Lots of raves on other sites for this beauty.

    Is that why you prefer Quik-Set to any other brand? They should turn that into a commercial for the Super Bowl... have a couple mob types mixing cement for a job they gotta do and a couple big guys lifting the job off his feet...

    Interesting insights Tony. I'm gonna hold out on my impressions (other than a star struck kid in a candy store) and spend some more time with both today.

    I just swapped out the stock JJ tubes in the VTL with some Russian Mullards.

    So I finally had a chance to pop the hood off this baby. Well built chassis, with a solid 3/8" thick steel faceplate. No wonder why this thing weighs so much for a smaller form factor unit. I measured about 10 lbs! :smile:

    Chassis is clean, with a tube compliment of 2 12AU7's, and a single 12AX7. As received, the 12AU7's are a Russian Electro-Harmonix, and a Yugoslavian Ei. Weird, different brands, but the getter shapes are different too. Gonna swap em out eventually for a matched pair.

    The 12AX7 is a Mullard. Looks to be a re-issue.

    Looks like a tube roll is in order!

    One thing that struck me was one corner of the PCB was unsupported. When either removing or installing a tube, the board deflected significantly. So I put my finger in the corner to help stabilize it.
