My cat is overdue for a nail clipping. In fact I just saw for the first time in my life, our cat bit one of it's nails and PULLED IT OFF!

You may have seen something normal. Google cat claw sheath. They pull them off often as part of grooming/nail renewal/sharpness.
My black cat of 17 years would let me turn him upside down in my lap to trim his nails without a fight because I made it about relaxed time together, not controlling him to do something unpleasant in a rush. Expect that there will be bumps in the road. Choose to not let them rattle you.

Speaking of which -- I have recently developed a theory about the cats of ancient Egypt.
The long-standing conjecture, I believe, is that cats belonging to aristocrats were sacrificed and mummified so as to spend eternity with their (erstwhile) masters when the time came.
My theory is that it may have been just the opposite. Kitteh kicks the bucket; time to off the erstwhile "master".
Everybody gets mummified!
I mean, it's not like there were mummy-cams in ancient Egypt, and I don't think radiocarbon dating could discern which croaked first, you know?
