I believe the calcium comment reflected the sort of fluffy, degraded appearance of the snail's shell -- which I hadn't even noticed when the photo was originally posted.

Maybe the owner has a VERY wide head and a tow in is not necessary?

It's just like snow tires -- all of 'em I've seen seem to be made out of some sort of rubberlike compound. I guess if they weren't, they'd melt in the summertime.
