Are cassettes really making a comeback?

My little Nak BX-125 served me well. Still have it, but needs belts and a good dusting and cleaning.
    w5hmac866gay.jpg

There's a BX-125 in silver down in the basement. It works properly but it's a pretty bare-bones machine. I kept it because I found it (at the ol' Harvard town dump) in its original packaging, which is nice.

A somewhat shabbier BX-100 passed through, too (same provenance -- of course :) ). I have a photo handy of the BX-100, so I'll share it here.

This was a pretty nice, late(r) Nakamichi 2-head deck. Same provenance as above -- this one I gave to one of the local hifi gurus who had a good use for it (as opposed to havin' it sit on a shelf here). He had a bunch of cassette tapes from his early 1980s "New Wave" band that he wanted to retrieve -- for a reunion with his old bandmates :)

(I think there was a three-head variant of this deck, as well)

The 125 was pretty bare bones, but did everything I needed it to do. I used the TDK SAs, and had great results.

found a (bad) photo of the aforementioned other cheap Nak here. It's not a BX-125, is it? :p I can't read the model number -- I'll have to drag my r-ump downstairs & look to see what it is :p

    EDIT: it's a BX-1. As bare-bones as a Nakamichi ever got.

Coming back? I don't think so in all reality so far as mainstream is concerned. Nostalgia comes into play here. My first real nice deck, and last, was an Onkyo Integra TA-2600. A very good machine especially with metal tapes. Many times I thought I should have kept it, just because...

Here's my Onkyo TA-2600, gets used a couple of times a year, I've been happy with it over the years. I also like my TEAC V-909RX (w/dbx), JVC KD-V6, and Sony TC-RX606ES (w/Dolby S) decks.

Onkyo made (or at least sold, i.e., they may have been made by others) a slew of nice-quality decks.

Probably worth noting that, especially in the early days of hifi cassette decks, a lot of companies' decks were Nakamichi OEM -- a lot of those were Nakamichi 500s :) That's not a bad thing.

I have a (slightly newer, I think) Radio Shack "Optimus" branded morph of a similar Pioneer dual well, dual auto-reverse deck (dump find). It is well behaved, dependable and makes a good enough cassette tape. When I actually use cassettes (usually to tape something off the radio -- how's that for retro?), this is the deck I use for it.

For good brands, at least (TDK, Maxell, e.g.) -- indefinite (decades).

Some back-coated reel to reel tapes have suffered over the decades (the so-called "sticky shed syndrome") and early reel tapes made with acetate medium (which turns brittle with the release of acetic acid over time) haven't aged well... but most cassette tape formulations have been immune to such bugaboos (at least IMO and IME).
