    That is a cute one!

The soiled state Sherwoods, like their vacuum tube predecessors, were very nice little receivers -- then (and even still now) totally off the marketplace's radar. They sound good and they have remarkable tuner sections.

In fairness, I don't know about the little S-7010, but the ones I've owned and/or heard are pretty remarkable little hidden gems. They're cute, too.

This is an S-7210 that I passed along, some years back, to our dear, departed friend George Grand. I'm not even sure that he wanted it, but he got it! :)

... and an S-7100A that passed through a while back.

(these photos are probably re-runs in this thread... sorry!)

  • I had the top Sherwood in the 70's. Got it at Sears.

One big ss Sherwood passed through here; an S-7910. I probably should've kept it... but I actually sold that one some years back.

Mark that s7210 is very similar to the s7010. From what i read up the small Sherwoods were pretty reasonable priced & still having the appearance of the vintage era. It is light as a feather but operates & sounds pretty decent for i think it was around 15wpc. I will send it offf on its way for someone else to enjoy.

I poke a lot of fun @ the Superscope-era Marantz receivers... but the 2270 is actually a very special piece of solid state equipment. It's one of the truly good ones.

I agree, the 2270 is a 40lbs beauty beast! Sounds better than most people would expect from an old piece of equipment with 70 watts, 7Hz to 50kHz and a 0.3% total harmonic distortion.

The Marantz1060 it's equally nice, this little 30W amp sound different from the 2270 but are really pleasing to my ears as well...

I don't remember if I posted about the Boston Acoustics A200's I picked up in February. So far I refoamed the woofers and tackled updating my 1st larger crossover. That was the easy part. The cabinets were a terrible mess. I filled in all the damaged areas and sanded them down. I was unable to get sharp corners so I finally decided to paint them but I couldn't find any black paint LOL. I was in a small local shop where the woman did painted furniture and she used chalk paint and then a wax designed to go over the paint. It was a very nice finish. So I picked up a small bottle of copper metallic and the wax. For the front I bought a black carbon fiber wannabe. Here's a couple of pics.

At this point in my life, I can usually resist middlin', massmarket 1970s soiled state hifi hardware.

    Usually.

This one followed me home from NEARC a week ago -- finally got around to trying it today.

I've always admired the aesthetics of these (and most Luxman hardware, right up to the present day).

Speaking of gear following you home. B)

I won this at an auction yesterday and picked it up this afternoon. I ordered a new belt and still need to see if the cartridge ohm's out. The stylus was busted off.

I have a nice pair of very vintage JBL 275 compression drivers mounted on H5040 horns (the "Metregon" horns) that I found on the swap pile at the Harvard (MA) town dump on a beautiful Fourth of July morning, years ago.

I (finally) dug 'em out last night and substituted them for the Fostex T90A supertweeters atop the Duplexes (using the same nominally ca. 10 kHz first order, padded XO).

No tuning has yet occurred, but initial results were very promising indeed.

Nothing but the finest, cryo-treated, OFC clipleads, of course.

Why the fug is it that no two hifi components have the same type of connectors on 'em? These utterly massive and (otherwise) beautifully made JBL drivers have little spring-loaded connectors that would have looked at home on a mid-1970s Radio Shack 'monkey coffin'. Thus the clipleads.

I think he's already well surpassed me in the 1970s hifi department... except for the little Yamaha ghetto, my collection of '70s stuff is mostly junk.

I wont say whats in my closets :) .. I played around with the Heresy's & i am enjoying them on tubes right now on some classical music-its not to bad at all. They seem to sound a bit better than the 5a w/peerless at lower/mid volumes than im use to. Threw the Marantz on the 5a's & what a power horse of a Marantz. Its got a different sound IMO from the 2252b model. Not power wise because the 2240 is powerful enough. It just seems to me the 2252b has a better sound quality. No idea but my ears notice a difference

I've never seen a JBL that looks like that! Has such drivers? Seems like it's a home version of the JBL 216 Pro (different woofer and I believe tweeter as well). Some of those home versions were OK. The most infamous being the JBL L/t series. I own a set of JBL L80ts that are permanently on tubes, home versions of the STUDIO 4410 or 4410a? You'd be surprised how good these sound on a tube integrated. I know JBL doesn't get a lot of love around here, and frankly, they have produced a lot of consumer garbage in their day, but not all of it.

I took some old JBL bookies and replaced the dead Titanium drivers with some soft dome Vifas from PExpress, gave them to my daughter for her dorm along with a cheap Sherwood receiver to power them. And now all her classmates can say is "where did you get THOSE speakers!" Even I am surprised by how much they sound like AJs Pioneers-not exactly, but very nice warm detailed highs and good low end for a two way 5". Of course they probably retailed for more than a couple of hundred back in the late '80s, early '90s?

I think your brother will have fun with those, Randy!

We now return you to our regularly scheduled and far less prolix programming! Everyone breathes a sigh of relief as cnh exits the building! lol

Great that your daughter is enjoying them Cnh. You can do alot to some speakers & make them sound great for a few modifications that dont break the wallet. I come across alot of weird items from storage units & i get my fair share of listening to a variety of vintage audio. I have set up all 3 kiddos & all my neices & nephews & bros & sisters. It brings me happiness to make audio more enjoyable to them & when i visit i get to see & hear it again :)
