Whats with all the talk about Oppo BDP-83 ?

Congrats...I think it's a toss up on whether you prefer the 3910 for 2 channel or not. There are those on both side of that fence from what I've read. I did some 2 channel listening last night, player to Luxman pre to amp. The 2 channel DACs output a higher voltage than the MCH. I'm not clear on what that does, but I notice quite a bit more kick at lower volumes. Bass is extremely punchy and at 9:30 on the gain, my drivers and PRs are dancing. Used to go to 11 or 11:30 to get that kind of response, though the volume isn't as loud. I'm probably somewhere in the low 90s. Frankly, I'm not sure if I don't prefer 2 channel from the MCH outs though it could have been the material I was playing. Still, both are very good.YES! The wife gave me one today for Father's Day / Wedding Anniversary. Breaking it in now with Prince Caspian in 7.1 DTS Master Audio. Fantastic picture and sound!
I haven't done 2-channel audio yet with it but right now the Denon 3910 is not in the rack and it may not make it back in there......I guess only time will tell.

SD DVDs will be upscaled to the resolution you have the TV and player set too. That's 1080p for me, but it's not at 24fps, it's 60hz. TV is not effected at all. If you have a 5.1 setup, then use 5.1 not 7.1. If you have a 7.1 rig, keep it set at 7.1...you won't lose anything if you're correctly configured. If you have a 5.1 setup and you do have the Oppo set to 7.1 and you happen to play a disk that's encoded 7.1 (very few) then you might be losing the back 2 channels. If you have a 7.1 setup and you play a 5.1 encoded disk, then the back to channels are downmixed by the Oppo...no worries.
I have my Oppo hooked up to a Pioneer SC-05 reciever, all through HDMI wiring. This reciever also has the option to let you set it to 1080p or Auto. Which should I set the Oppo and SC-05 to get the best picture quality from tv/sports and movies? -

I suggest you set it to your displays native resolution. So I would set it to 1080p, and if your set supports 24hz then turn that on as well.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

I was wrong...if your display supports 24hz then DVD or BDs will be fine. Set it to Auto, if it doesn't display then you'll need to check another option. As far as the Pio AVR, I don't know the setup nomenclature, but my choice would be a direct pass through from the player, no conversion at the AVR. It's likely a higher end chipset that's doing upconversion on the Oppo and you don't want another layer of processing in the signal. Let it go native, 1080p/auto.

So set both the Oppo and Pioneer reciever both to 'Auto' and it will upconvert regular dvd's to 1080i or 1080p and show the full affects of BD's as well? So 'Auto' is the optimum setting to get the most out of dvd's and BD's?
The Pioneer SC-05 has a Faroudja DCDi video processor provides the deinterlacing and scaling of analog inputs. Pioneer decided not to process any HDMI signals, instead these signals are passed through the unit untouched. The composite, S-video, and component inputs can be transcoded to HDMI and output at resolutions up to 1080p/60, which means you only have to run one cable from the AVR to the display
My display is a Pioneer Elite Kuro Pro-111fd plasma. -
If you have the Oppo hooked up to the SC-05, the Pioneer will pass it through untouched via HDMI as you mentioned, so set the Oppo to do 1080p, turn 24hz option on for BD. For SD DVD I have the 24hz option turned off. For SD DVD you will want to set the Oppo to do 1080p also. From there you should be fine, this is how I have mine paired up with the SC-07 and JVC RS10 projector.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

I contacted Oppo about this topic to see what they say and they responded back with:
"We would recommend setting the player to 1080p and ensuring that HDMI is set to "Bit Stream" (Audio Setup). These will be the optimal settings for your BDP-83.

I now know where to set the Oppo thanks to you guys and Oppo customer service, I'm still just a little confused about where to set the SC-05 reciever to, it has the option to be set to 'Auto' or '1080p' as well. -

Why the confusion? The SC-05 will pass any signal via HDMI untouched, so it set it to Auto or 1080p, doesnt matter.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

I would set the SC-05 to "pass through". Let the Oppo do the processing. -

This has an network interface on the back so you can connect it directly to your home network. If you have DHCP enabled, the player will grab an IP address automatically and be connected to the Internet. Thanks for the info. I would rather not fuss with hooking it up to my network. Not to mention the possibility of malware at some point.

Can someone speak to whether or not this player would truly be vulnerable to malware? It is Java based so surely the capability is not out of the realm of possibility but if it is on a private network behind a firewall, it is not directly pingable from the outside. If the player is designed to only grab firmware updates from the mothership, it seems to me that the only two methods someone has of hacking the unit is to be on the private network and know the IP of the player or to hack Oppo's download site and place a hacked firmware update in place of the real update.____________________________________________________________

That's a good question. I'd take it to Oppo or to the EAP thread at AVS. I'm sure neuromancer or wmmclain can answer. They've done most of the troubleshooting posts in that 15K+ post thread.

I pulled the trigger and ordered mine from Oppo directly...should be here early next week!
I plan on doing some serious comparisons of the BD83 and my Cambridge 640C V2, and AVR for best DAC performance for CDs....maybe the BD83 will be my 'do everything' player - as I can even dabble w/ SACDs!
Let the sonic goodness begin....:p

I'd be interested in that comparison. MCH is very good through my HK in 6/8 Channel Direct mode. 2 channel is too, but it's much better when I take the HK out of the loop and use my Luxman pre. Also, I prefer 2 channel through the MCH outputs over the dedicated 2 channel outs on the player. That just could be me. The dedicated 2 channel outs have an upgraded DAC and associated OP amps, resistors, etc., but the higher output voltage isn't playing as nice with the Luxman...not noisy, just sounds over(d)amped. Bass hits astoundinly hard and sounds out of balance. I suppose I could just turn it downErik Tracy wrote: »I pulled the trigger and ordered mine from Oppo directly...should be here early next week!

For those that already have the Oppo BD83.....how warm/hot does it run?
I have a spot in my AV cabinet, but can also put it on top for full open air circulation - if it does run hot.
Does it run hotter when upconverting DVDs?
Thanks,

My unit runs quite cool. I would say lukewarm at best. I do currently have a few inches of clearance on top of it and it also sets on a shelf directly above the AVR.____________________________________________________________

I've read posts all over the place on this question. There's been more than one complaint about fan noise and excessive heat. I've never had the fan kick on with mine and it's normally cool, but I did notice some heat after a full day/night of music and BDs I think it varies with your situation, in a hot room, with poor ventilation...heat...if you're setup like me or dpowell...not so much.
