Whats with all the talk about Oppo BDP-83 ?

As has been stated before, people are excited about this Oppo mostly because:

1. It's a "universal" player (plays every format out there, besides HD-DVD).
2. The boot times on Blu-rays (Dark Knight for example) are <10 seconds for most discs.
3. Oppo is known to be VERY smart when it comes to pricing.
4: Incredible up-scaling of regular dvd's.

I'm no expert, but if you were to look at another player with all the options the Oppo is going to have and compared prices...I think you'd find the Oppo at least $100 cheaper.

There's actually another universal player announced that would be cheaper than the Oppo....but no by much. I forget the brand but I started a thread about it here. However, the brand is a newcomer and not known like Oppo. Otherwise, the next step up from the Oppo BDP-83 will be the universal players from Denon and Marantz....and those cost thousands more than the Oppo.

Hmmm...I'll have to keep my eye on this one.

I plan on going with a dedicated CDP for my redbook CDs, but am in the hunt for a new BD player that I'll connect just HDMI to my avr for DVDs and BD movies.

Has Oppo released a date yet for when the final product will be ready to buy?

I also read the Oppo BDP-83 will have direct DSD over HDMI and DSD to analog without going through a PCM conversion. I'm not familiar with which other players offer that feature, maybe it's mainstream now and most do that too?

I'm up in the air between this Oppo and the new Pioneer Elite BPD-23fd. Pioneer has pushed back the release date to end of May. I'll wait for both to come out and read the reviews of both before I buy.

Only time will tell how good or bad the new Oppo will be but if it is anything like it's predecessors it will be an outstanding player at it's price point. Sure there are audio and video snobs out there who will tell you if it isnt made out of solid billet cut aluminum and highly polished and weighs at least 40lbs and costs thousands it's crap.

The reality is that most people cant afford several stand alone mega dollar players nor do they want a rack 8 feet high filled with these things


So for those of us who want a universal player at a reasonable price it most likely will fit the bill.

The customer service is outstanding also, try sending an email to other companies regarding a player that you paid a few hundred dollars for and see how long it takes to get a response, with oppo it is usally within a few hours max if not within minutes :cool: also firmware upgrades are done quickly and easily.

They have developed quite a reputation in the few years they have been making audio/video products and for good reason, I cant see them developing a crappy player at this time. Just the fact they sent out a few hundred players for testing at reduced prices shows they are very serious about this being the best player for the $$ involved.

Pioneer's first universal player, the 563, will do direct DSD>>>analog if it was in 2 channel mode. Same with its successor, the 578. I've also heard that all Sony SACD-capable players can do DSD>>>analog in 2 channel mode.

Of course, this was before HDMI can support DSD transmission.

After reading the Beta tester reviews it seems there are some quirks that need to be fixed and tweaked before the Oppo 83 is released. Oppo should hit the nail on the head before it's released so the customers don't have to download all sorts of firmware updates to fix the bugs.

Perhaps? but I think they have a small staff here in the US, but they are very efficent at answering emails 10 well trained people can do the work of 50 poorly trained inefficent ones I know when I ordered mine on dec 21 I was sure that it would be new years before it arrived, surprise surprise it was at my po box on dec 24th and the one time i sent an email asking about the different outputs it was answered within 15 mins and I have heard the same type of story from countless people.

Yes that is one of the things that is impressive about this young company is that they are actually taking the time to test there product before releasing it. Smart if you ask me because once you build up a reputation you sell a lot more product.

Release of the BDP-83 seems to be soon, based on comments made by the early testers. DVD-A playback is confirmed and Oppo has also acknowledged that on its webpage for the BDP-83.

Rumored list price is $500.00

Are there any other players to consider when looking for entering the world of Blu Ray? it seems that this Oppo and the Pioneer Elite to come are the favored players on this forum. I already have a great SACD player so I'm mainly concerned about video quality. A good pre or AVR like the Pioneer SC series would do the best audio processing.

If youre considering the SC05, then definitely check out the Oppo or new Elite. I'm not sure which route I'm going, but I will be buying one or the other.

$500 is too much for a blu-ray player nowadays, even with all the added options and perks.

I agree that this is going to be an amazing player, but $500? I love blu-ray, but I simply can't afford that kind of money (MOST people can't in this economy).

Drop it below $300, and I might be able to scrounge up enough money. God knows I need a new player (mine is getting long in the tooth).

While I agree that a lower price would be far more attractive, $500 is still a great value if you need the universal function. I can probably sell my 2 players for ~ $300, so the hit won't be too great. I'll stick with what I have for a few months, then adopt the new Oppo after the kinks are worked out.

i figure i have an older $400 DVD-A/SACD player and a $300 Blu ray so $500 isn't bad considering i don't have a receiver/pre-amp that has hdmi (just not ready to dive in yet) and am unable to get the HD audio formats due to my DVD-A/SACD player taking up the multi ch input. the oppo is what i have been waiting for

beside we all have i justifiable expenses

The website shows the list price of $599 right below the special pre order price of $499. It suggests a price increase but doesn't come right out and say it.

I have been waiting for this player but I just realized it is $499 plus $82 shipping to Toronto. With the current exchange rate at roughly 1.25% it comes out to roughly $690 CAN and that's WITHOUT duty or any other taxes I may get hit with. Looks like I'll have to keep using the PS3 for a while until either the price comes down or I find a used one which I doubt will happen for a while.

Also, from a pricing standpoint, too low of a price would compete with their other product lines. From my point of view I'm thinking of replacing 2 units with this one. This seems to make sense to me. A Denon 2910 and Samsung 1400. :rolleyes:
