BTW, does anyone know if I will be able to take advantage of the HD audio formats if I'm still only on a 5.1 AVR? I know that the Oppo will do the processing but I wasn't sure if those formats were limited to 7.1 encoded movies.

My AVR does have 5.1 inputs. I lose all functionality of the receiver though so hopefully the Oppo can control center and rear volume levels independent of the AVR.

Over the analog the Oppo can control Speaker setup. You will be able to enjoy HD audio over the analog multichannel inputs yes. Congrats on your purchase and enjoy.

The Oppo will downmix any 7.1 track to 5.1. Just be sure to turn off the back surround speakers in the set-up menu.

Good to finally see some reviews on this. Looks pretty promising so far.

This is definitely at the top of the list for my first Blu-ray player right now. I love that it offers SACD/DVD-A playback. Prior to this, the only BRP's that offered that cost upwards of 1500 dollars, which is out of my price range...

How much are you guys paying for them? I checked their website, but didn't see any prices on there. 600 is what I remember hearing a while back...don't know if that price still stands though.

Looks like the intro price is $499. Is anyone buying the 2 year extended warranty for $69?

499? That's even better. I was thinking it was a steal at 600...lol

This is most likely going to be my first Blu-ray player. I'm not in the market quite yet though.

Next year my HT setup is getting a massive overhaul. Everything aside from my speakers is getting upgraded.

I know a lot of you have the Pioneer Elite's...how does the BDP83 play with the SC-07's? Any issues so far? The SC-07 and BDP83 are likely going to be the front end of my HT setup after the overhaul.

How is the BDP83 for serious 2 channel listening?

That's what I'd like to know. I guess I'll buy one of these and then test it side-by-side with my Denon to see if I keep both.

One of the things to consider here...is that High End players will be less noticeably better on a smaller HD screen. The better the player the more visible the improvements on a larger screen. That's why I'm not that worried about upgrading my PS3....

But if you've got a high end plasma or projection going sure....not that the oppo is going to compete with units above 2K?

vs the Denon 2900, my buddy prefers the Oppo, not sure about the 39xx models. That's both 2 channel and MCH.

And therein lies the question as to how or if the DAC's and audio circuitry in this player can compete with a +$1,500 or $2k unit from several years ago. I'd be interested to know how this would stack up against Sony's $2k ES Blu Ray player and what would cause someone to spring with the extra $1,500 to get it.

I just got an email from Oppo, to be put on the shipment priority list for Jun 1- Jun 15th.

Do I need *another* DVD/BD player? lord knows I don't
Do I want one? Hell, yeah.

now, if it also play HD-DVD, I am in.

ps: still thinking about it though.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Anyone care to tackle the extended warranty question? How have previous Oppo players held up and is it worth the extra $69 bucks to get 2 extra years of coverage?

    I'm interested in that myself.

Personally, 2 ch. is where my main interests lie, which is why I'm in the middle of setting up a dedicated 2 ch. rig. I could never imagine spending 2000 dollars on a Blu-ray player.

As far as movie watching, the internal DAC's of the player aren't going to make any difference for sound quality are they? Assuming an HDMI connection is used anyway.

No personal experience here, but I've always heard pretty good things about Oppo as far as reliability goes.

Correct, for movie watching, the amp's DAC's would matter most (except in my case right now where I'm going to use the 5.1 inputs on my AVR until something better lands on my doorstep) ;). They would make a difference when using the separate 2-channel outputs on the back of the Oppo. I plan to use them for my 2-channel listening.

I own an Oppo DV-970HD, bought it new in 2006. It is still going strong, zero issues, and even the firmware update (which I did several times) were pretty flawless, provided you follow the instructions. I didn't buy the extended warranty on it.

If I were you, I would not buy an extended warranty. Having said that, if it would make you sleep better, go for it. I tend to draw the line whether to get extended warranty or not, based on price. Anything over $1500 would compelled me to get one. The one that pays off, as far as extended warranty: cars and laptop.

Its a great ALL-IN-ONE unit, but there is nothing WOW about it. Bluray performance pretty much the same as PS3 or any other non-cheap player, CD performance nothing outstanding, DVD upscaling is useless (at least to me, I have not watched a DVD in about 2 years), SACD........ah...I prefer 2 channel analog like most people in here

There's some WOW...maybe not OMG OMG OMG WOW....or OMFG WOW but specs are niiice...I personally don't go WOW at all myself. I was more like.....cool blueray.....cool usb.....cool some dac....its a bit of a homer simpson approach...but nonetheless....there's some WOW here dood. cmon give WOW credit where WOW credit is due.
