Not sure how you pulled that one off but congrats. I grew impatient and tried to order one before receiving an invitation and was told to wait for the email. Congrats though.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

Some initial thoughts:
Finally received the Oppo and got it installed and fired up. Some 1st impressions upon receiving and unpacking, is Oppo does a nice job with this player. Everything from packing( comes in a black cloth bag) to the accessories (packed in a black box) to match is very well done and a nice touch to the player itself.
After unpacking it and setting it up, install was a breeze with the initial install wizard on screen. This player is a tweakers dream as it supports everything one can think of. The menus are layed out very well and very easy to navigate. I set up the player to Bitstream to my SC-07, Deep Color Support Enabled, Full 1080p/24 Enabled and some other settings enabled according to my setup.
Upon power on the player boots up very fast, almost instantly to the splash screen. My Panasonic BD30 took a few seconds to achieve this, but to those who want a fast player this is really it, outside of the PS3. From disc loading to picture again very short wait, its almost like a standard DVD player, very fast.
Another characteristic I like with this player is remote response, commands are instant, everything from Eject to Fast Forward, no waiting. Ejecting the media does result in resume from where you left off if selected, another nice touch.
The player itself is very well built, heavy, solid and so far an excellent performer. Networking is very easy, simply plug and play since I have it wired in over my network switch. I did check for firmware update and as promised upon ordering, my unit already had the latest firmware installed.
Both SQ/PQ with this unit are very good, watching POC appeared very film-like over 1080p/24, a slight notch above my Panasonic BD30. More to come as I test more media. Paired up with my JVC RS-10 PQ is unrivaled, so for those of you with 1080p displays prepare to be amazed. This player truly demonstrates a spectacular image.
SQ is very dynamic over HDMI paired with the SC-07. I do notice more LFE with this player installed, not sure why that would be the case but it is very noticeable. One thing Oppo does mention is that in the menu the player does not affect Speaker Configuration via HDMI, but only over analog so for those with older receivers you're in luck.
The included backlit remote is very well laid out. I particularly like that when pressing the backlit it is very easy to read the commands in white lettering. In the past I have experienced where turning on the backlit still had me leaning towards my screen to see it, perhaps it's time for glasses, but no so when using the remote with the Oppo. Speaking of glasses, you may need them when reading the Oppo manual. I found the font to be very small, almost too small compared to some other user manuals I have. A small nit pick I know.
I have some SACDs on the way from Amazon and will report more on that as well.
Again 1st impressions are I think it is well worth the coin, this unit is a dream for those who like to tweak as there are adjustments for improving the image in every possible way . The image on 126" screen is very 3D-like. The black bars simply disappear into my "black" screen wall, that would be due to my projector, however I think this where I reach content.
For those of you on the fence, highly recommended. If there are additional thoughts or questions let me know.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

The video processing in this player is amazing. I'm testing Ratatouille now and playing with the video processing and it unreal. Adjusting the Detail Enhancement gives you that sharp Kuro like image, its almost scary. Though it no longer looks flim-like with the enhancement turned fully up, the chipset in this player is very good. This should prove usefu when viewing SD DVD content. Ok more watching, will post more later.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

How is the PQ compared to the PS3. I'm still on the fence. -
Finally got mine installed this weekend. My first impression is that it was worth the wait. It played every disc I threw at it flawlessly. BD, SACD and DVD-A. I have mine connected via 5.1 analog to Emo LMC-1/LPA-1 combo. Dolby TrueHD on Transformers had the Sub working overtime nearly the entire movie. Video connection is via hdmi directly to my 60" Sony SXRD. Playbck was smooth and colors were more vibrant than my A30 HD DVD player. Load times are super fast. Watched Wall-E with the kids, there is a "please wait while this disc loads...may take 2-3 minutes..." message on the screen from the disc. The 83 loaded in about 15 seconds. No regets so far.Proud SOPA Member since 2005!

PQ on this unit is very good, I've watched POC, Ratatouille, Taken, and now watching Valkyrie, the image is very sharp, no noise, etc. I am very impressed with this player. With load times right on par with your PS3, plus a ton of features added, I would spring for it.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

Thanks for the update guys. It's nice to hear good reports on new products.

Sherard, aside from the load times, is there any improvement in picture quality or sound over the PS3? Also, is the DVD upscaling as good as people say it is? Noticeably better than the PS3?
I have my invite waiting so I'm on the fence as well. Especially since I can get a Panasonic BD 35 for $150 right now. I want the SACD playback though and people say the DVD playback on the Oppo 83 is second to none. Thinking of going the Panny route only because its much cheaper and it gets good reviews for what it does.
Let us know.
Thanks in advance.

More and more tempting....
For those with the 83 and SD-DVDs - what is your current experience with layer changes?
Some current BD players are said to have layer change delays of up to 2-3 seconds.
Do you notice any pause with the 83 during layer changes?
Anyone do any serious DAC comparisons for 2-channel music listening between the 83 and your AVR?
Thanks!

Falcon,
I personally don't own a PS3 so I can't really give you a report on comparing the two. I can tell you tha SD DVD conversion is better on the Oppo than my Panasonic BD-30. Then to top it off there are quite a few enhancements to make the SD image even better.
As for the cable in my setup, I moved it underneath my player, however it is simply an IR blaster that I use with my SpeakerCraft IR kit. All my components are installed in the rear of my room so with the kit I can point the remotes at the corner of my screen and still control everything without having to turn around or break my neck looking back.
Erik I haven't noticed any delay in layer changes when playing back SD DVD so far. I will be testing more SD DVD media tomorrow, as of today I only played Star Wars. I have a nice collection so I am definitely putting the Oppo to work.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

I was an early believer of Oppo in 2006, with their DV-970HD, still have it in fact, never had issue, alhough currently sitting unused.
Is this unit has a better video processing than a REON based unit like my Sammy BD-UP5000?I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -

Well I just tested this out for you and can confirm it will do at least three. Each one picking up where I left off, in various places in the movie. Not sure I will test up to 40 but you do get at least three. Hope that helpsShoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

I like the idea that this player pretty much plays everything you throw at it. Nice to hear all the positives about it so far also.
I do have a question...Can it output audio over bitstream and analog simultaneously? In other words can it output audio via digital and analog at once without the need for switching? This is one issue with the PS3 I don't like, also the PS3 doesn't have multi-channel analog outs.
Thanks
I'm not sure that this answers your question but, When I am playing a disc I can switch from DVD to multichannel to CD on my processor ithout touching the OPPO. So it is sending the signal to both digital and analog.....:DPio Elete Pro 520

Thanks. That is at least a 300% improvement.
When I talked to Oppo about it they told me it was due to the current generation of silicon, and the next chip would have a larger memory for keeping track of movies.
I rarely watch anything start to finish anymore, so this is an important feature for me. Over the weekend, I was watching in an interspersed manner, Band of Brothers, Star Wars - Episode 1, Underworld - Revenge of the Lycons, and Tenacious D - Pick of Destiny.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

does anyone knows if this new player has the same problem as the existing upscaling dvd's. I currently have a sony s350 and a pioneer 48av and whenever I play a regulaer dvd movie at one point or another it hangs for about a few seconds and then it continues. After I have patch the sony Blu ray the hang has become a very short pause but I can still notice the pause even if it is a second.

I would be interested to know if I buy the Oppo whether or not there would be any need for me to hang on to my Denon 3910. I'm quite impressed with the audio playback and video upscaling it offers. Can the $500 Oppo's components compete with a player that in its day sold for upwards of $1,500?____________________________________________________________

I could of got a 3910 brand new for 600.00 a year ago. Kick myself in the **** now for not snagging it when I had the chance. It was from an authorized dealer with full warranty.
Hence the reason for my question. It's a fantastic player and I would be hesitant to let it go, especially given that it would probably not bring that high of a price tag any more.____________________________________________________________

Denon 3910 is a solid machine. Having owned Denon DVD 3800 and all of its defects made me shy away from Denon DVD player. However, 3910 is da bomb. Even better, if you have it modded, then it becomes a high-end redbook/SACD player...

Thanks vmaxer...And yep, I have this same issue with my Yammie Universal. It defaults to multi-channel on hybrid SACD. I listen to SACD in 2 channel mostly and it's a slight inconvenience stopping the player then setting it to stereo mode. It starts back to the beginning of the track. Being that they're on different layers of the disc I doubt there's any firmware upgrade to fix this.
You can set the Oppo to default to either 2 channel or multichannel. I sometimes like to switch back and forth at a certain point so it is a bit of an issue for it to start over. Not the end of the world....:DPio Elete Pro 520
