Cathy - sorry to hear that. Hang in there. You have to approach it with the attitude that you already have a new job, and that new job is looking for a job. Have you thought about job retraining? If you've been there for 28 yrs and are now laid off (hopefully they wrote it as your position was eliminated) there are programs that will allow you to collect unemployment and go back to school. Check into them.

Take a few days or a week to think about what you're really good at, how that may be communicated in a number of different ways to get different types of jobs, and figure what you really enjoy doing. The intersection of what you're good at and what you enjoy is a sweet spot to focus on.

Cathy, lots of us are in positions of hiring or referals, tell us a little about what you've done and want to do. In these times, we need to use every avenue to advance our careers and maybe, just maybe, someone here can point you towards an opportunity.

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Hang in there Cathy. I just started a temp position 3 months ago after 9 months of being unemployed. I used the time to take some classes, do some work around the house, and of course job hunt. Not sure how things are in your area, but there has been a little change for the better here, hope it's real and extends your way.

Sorry to hear this Cathy. Curious though as to the reason they gave you. Alot of companies are useing the economy to drive out the older higher paid employees for the younger cheap ones that they know they can abuse for awhile. Hope that wasn't your case and best wishes for a new job.

That's awful! But as Brock says...no one is 'safe'. I'm over here in China and among my temporary colleagues are people with MBAs, Law Degrees, Ph.D.s, Engineering degress, etc. Most of them are Canadian or Americans who were having trouble finding work--so they're employed here. I'm simply 'visiting' on my sabbatical year! But what a group of 'talented' people we have over here!

The U.S. is still not generating those jobs and I have no doubt that tonyb is right! Us older, let's say middle-aged folks, COST TOO MUCH. No matter that we have tons of experience and can often do the work of 2 or 3 youngsters.
It's a real shame. I hope something comes up soon!

the us economy and job market is going down hill for sure. sorry to hear of your woes. ill say its good you held onto your job this long. it speaks miles about you. ill let a short story, of a friend, that was interesting to me. in beaverton oregon there is a manufacturing facility for intel. my brother in law is an engineer there. he has a collegue thats was doing some preemptive lay off research and applied as a technition/engineer at a local water treatment facility. after running the numbers(like all brain buckets like to do) he figured he had a 1 in 80 chance of applicants and he figured hed be in the top 10 % of those 80. he was sadly mistaken. keep in mind this is a sewage treatment facility not a .003 micron, silicone chip, clean room. he found himself in a pool of 500+ applicants...50% bachlorette(some had masters degrees). we are in trouble there is no doubt. best wishes ,dan

Sorry to hear that. I hope they gave you a considerable severance. There are definitely companies taking "advantage" of the company to save a buck and using the economy as an excuse. It really is low. I don't know why companies still celebrate and honor people with years-of-service awards when in a quick change of mind they have no problem getting rid of the more loyal people.

I hope you find something soon. Unfortunately it's easier to find something if you are willing to move.

I'll wish you luck, Ms. Cfrizz, but you won't need any luck; you have your stuff together and good opportunities will come your way. They may be a little different than what you're used to and what you expect, but .... it's all good if you let it.

Sorry to hear that cfizz...I've been there many times in my young life!

I started my current job in 2008, just before the budget crisis and before schools lost millions of dollars of funding.

My job was on the fence, and I didn't find out I would be staying till my LAST day at 3:55pm (I get off work at 4).

With your experience and work history, I'm sure you'll be able to find something worthwhile. You might have to be willing to do some traveling though.

Thanks, but no I have no interest in picking up & moving to CT. I made out well in the severance dept most of us did since we were there for so long. The majority of us got 52weeks of severance which is the maximum that they will give.

And I'm still a relative youngster there with only 28 years. One woman who was let go was there over 35 yrs! Needless to say, she is happy to be gone & she is just a year or 2 away from being able to retire.
