If I had to pick my favorite at the moment, it'd be Gentle Giant - The House, The Street, The Room.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMqn9fr-GTs

It really is three songs in one... and all of them kick ****. It will damn near knock my house apart when cranked on the SDA's with the Adcom's instantaneous distortion alert lights a' blinkin'.

+1...I guess a lot of this depends on how 'old' you are! Because a lot of the songs listed are OK but they're not 'Originary'. Much of the music mentioned is 'derivative' of the CLASSIC period...which is most definitely the 60s and perhaps early 70s!

I can't decide my favorite song from my favorite artists, much less the best of all time. Fun to consider though. Great thread.

I heard a song the other day that I haven't heard in a long time. I always liked it okay, but never would have considered it great. After hearing it the other day, I'm really liking it. "House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals.

the era I was thinking of was mid 70's to mid 80's

so whatever you call that era.. what is the best song? I tend to like 70's classic rock. not much into 60's classic rock. unless it's something like the Beatles or the like.
    PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I got you but! Stones, Zeppelin, Hendrix..Pink Floyd and lots more all started rocking in the 60s! The Beatles ignited a fire of classic rock that was popping up all over by the late 60s and early 70s.

I'm listening to some Hendrix right now...and the number of songs and artists he, alone, influenced above is voluminous.

IMO, it would have to be "Close to the Edge" by YES.

"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Anything by the Doors...like say "Love Me Two Times".

Props to Chuck Berry for Johnny B. Goode who literally defined what Rock guitar was to become. Years after this song players were coping Chucks licks on guitar! The intro is just tooo cool!!

I can't really pick a fav because there are just too many.

I just snagged that album a week or so ago...I gave it a listen for the first time today...some excellent cuts on here!! The Black Dog on there is awesome!!

Best rock song ever? As others have mentioned, Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode has to be ranked among the top few. The guitar in that song went a very long way towards shaping the way guitars have sounded ever since.

Another one that needs to be mentioned, is Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone". To me...this song encompasses everything that rock and roll is all about, and really defined a generation/lifestyle for a lot of people.

The Best ever though? I don't really think such a thing exists. When you factor in everyones own personal tastes, and consider the fact that certain songs can mean a LOT more to one person than they do to another...it's really hard to come up with a clear cut "best ever". It's essentially impossible to name a "best ever" regarding anything with music though IMO. This is a topic that has far too much bias to name anything like that.

Curt, if you haven't listened to it yet, be sure to check out the live version of "Bring it on Home", the last song on Disc 3 of HTWWW. There's a great section of interplay between Plant on harmonica, Bonzo on drums and Page on guitar where they are kind of dueling with one another in a completely improvisational and very bluesy and jazzy manner (from the 3min 50sec mark to the 7min mark) Probably one of my favorite rock moments (alongside that funky jam that comprises the last 4 minutes of "Echoes (Part I)" on Pink Floyd's Live at Pompeii DVD.

I'm hoping Led Zeppelin will eventually release the counterpart of the '72 LA and Long Beach shows captured on HTWWW with a live CD entitled "How the East is Won," covering the Oosaka and Tokyo shows from Sept. 1971 one day.
