Just got back from watching the Rus Lat game. When Latvia scored that first goal, well, I think that was one of the more exciting moments of my life. Even the Russian fans were going nuts. It was GREAT!

    Swe Ger tomorrow!

Two interesting observations about the winter olympics: First came from the local ESPN radio. 1. I believe there is only one African American in the Olympics - Shani Jones (Speed skating). They had a big discussion on why that is, and why the winter sports didn't 'speak' to many minority races. I won't share the reasons, but some made sense. Observation 2: It seems to me that there are a few dangerous, perhaps suicidal events in the Winter Olympics: Luge (Obviously), Downhill skiing (Over 75 miles an hour on ice - wow), Snowboarding (Can easily break a neck - seen many broken bones in the X-Games), and I'm sure there are more. Are there ANY dangerous summer olympic events? I guess MAYBE wrestling...I guess you can get speared by a javelin - but Winter Olympics seems just more dangerous overall. Not to mention the random curling death.

    LOL! Funny James.

I would think pole vaulting, gymnastics of various kinds, hurdle racing, heavy weight lifting, boxing, that's all I can think of at the moment that could cause serious if not lethal injuries.

Not on the same level as pummeling down a mountain at 90 mph. I guess, in the winter olympics, you are being put in danger by nature, and man's tempation to dare death. In the summer, I guess you can pull a muscle lifting heavy weights, or get brain damage from boxing with gear on, but to me, there's a big difference.

Drop that weight on your head or land on your head in gymnastics and you've got a broken neck. However, going 90 mph down a mountain has them beat.

HUGE favor, shot in the dark, but i'm driving myself crazy here.

Cris Collinsworth interviewed Shaun White. I can't find the video of the interview online, and i mistakenly deleted it off the DVR.

Can anyone find that video? And here's the important part:

I need to know what song was used when they were showing off his private half-pipe. The tricky part is that there were no lyrics. But I NEED that song. Really. HALP.

This is the first year I actually watched a game. It actually looks pretty challenging.

I finally made my way down town and the energy is inexplicable. The buzz (and the booze) is intoxicating to say the least. I'm hooked on all things olympics now and I can stop watching!

The city is intense right now isn't it? The best way I can describe it to people is: picture Freemont St. in Vegas at about 11:00 pm, times 20. Unreal weather too! So glad I came.

If I had a gun, I'd shoot myself when Chris Collingsworth does Olympic commentary...he's bad enough for NFL in his psuedo-gravely voice. And...who does his hair???

Well I finally got back from my Olympic experience and being home sucks.
I wish I had more time to check out more of the cultural aspects, but after seeing 7 hockey games how can I complain?

    Random points:

Everything seemed really well organized and they had TONS of volunteers everywhere directing crowds, offering advice etc. The problems they have been having are unfortunate (throw out those "green" Olympia pieces of s!@# and use the tried, tested, and true Canadian Zamboni!).

    Things I didn't do:
Hold a medal (6 hour line to get into the Mint to see and hold them? No thanks)
Go to The Bay (2 block line to go shopping for Olympic clothing... No thanks)
Go to the Molson Pavilian (I heard it was 400 dollar cover during the Can-USA game)

Thank you USA for kicking our butts! It allowed me to see Canada play in the qualification vs Germany.

During the Norway - Swiss game, somebody brought in a 3' tall inflatable kangaroo and it started bouncing around the stand like a beach ball. The 4 sportscasters all got old of it and each took a picture with it, then one of them (forget who) whipped it over his shoulder nailing some poor guy behind him square in the face. Maybe it was the booze, but seeing a kangaroo bouncing around the crowd was HILARIOUS! Before the game, the event host interviewed Vikingstad's family, large family, who came from places all over the world. Watching him get a Hat-trick while seeing his kids waving a HUGE "Go DAD!" banner was special. The guy who threw Viking horns onto the ice instead of the standard cap has my respect. The guy who threw the hat after play had resumed can get a foot up his arse.

Nice information BeRad. All that we seem to get here in the states is how horribly organized the games have been. I think the LA Times had an article a few days back calling it the "Blunderful Games." Glad that it is much better than being reported.

By the way, I see that you are from Thunder Bay. I've been there several times on business. Scariest airport that I have ever flown into!

San Diego Lindberg Field has a good pucker factor, too.

...fly level with windows in the surrounding high-rise towers...come within 50ft of a parking structure....single short runway akin to a carrier landing....miss the #3 wire and you are off for another approach :D

I don't see how our airport could be scary. It is small, but we are only a city of 115,000. The runway is more than enough for anything that lands here, but they are extending it anyways (waste of bloody money).

I can only speak of my own experience but to me everything seemed to run smoothly. I never got to Whistler or Cypress so maybe things are worse out there. Then again, sometimes there are people that believe the only news worth reporting is bad news.

I flew in once during a big thunder storm. The plane was tossed all over the place. Most of the people on the plane were locals who seemed to think that it was "normal" to be tossed around like that (I'm not a fan of seeing lightening up close). I was crapping myself. I also flew in there in January 2009. I'm not sure if the plane hit a patch of ice, but we seemed to do some type of skid right after landing. Not as scary, but still got the heart going. In my life, I've been on two planes that had to make "emergency" landings, but still was never as scared as the night I flew into Thunder Bay during a thunder storm.

Just watched Joannie Rochette hit the podium in figure skating. That was probably the hardest anyone has ever had to fight to earn a bronze medal. I know I wouldn't have 1/10'th the strength she had to even compete, let alone win a medal.

For anyone who doesn't know the back story, her mother had a heart attack upon arriving in Vancouver on Sunday to watch her daughter skate, and passed away. It was impossible to not get choked up while watching Rochette break out in tears after her short program.
