That's the point Dan, you can hop in every thread and bash Windows all you want, just don't get upset when someone steps in your thread and does the same thing to Mac. You can't dish it out and then take it personally when someone hands it back to you, it doesn't work that way...
I have a wife, parents, nieces and nephews, cousing, and grandparents. Between friends and family, I support about 15 machines in all, on machines that I've built. Everyone else either has a Dell or a Mac, neither of which I can help much on. On those machines that I've built, all except 2 are Windows (I have 5 machines at home and two of them are Linux).
I really don't have any issues with any of the machines any longer. I did early on, but in the last 5 or 6 years I've really had no major issues.
I have a really simple setup that's worked for me, goes something like this:
1 - Install and configure OS, data and user folder like My Documents go on a separate partition on the drive.
2 - A good AV and firewall program are installed, I prefer the ESET suite.
3 - PC gets imaged using True Image, and I hand them a boot disc with the computer.
4 - Before any significant upgrades (anything that's going to be a big software or driver install) I load up a fresh image and do the upgrade on top of that - I've only had a couple upgrades though in the past few years that have required this.
5 - If a problem ever crops up and I don't want to take alot of time to fix it, the image gets reloaded, the data drive gets a virus check, and a script gets run to map the folders back over to that drive.
It may sound more complicated than it is, it's really a very simple process that's never failed me. It's basically a system restore, but a) you don't lose your data and b) you actually restore to a pre-configured state that you want vs a Dell or HP preset.
The funny thing is, I don't even do this for a living. My time at work is split between data analysis, process improvement, and working in a SQL Server environment basically writing queries and jobs. I'm not an IT guy. -
Heh.MacOS isn't really UNIX. MacOS is based on Linux
Just an FYI. Mac is nothing to do with Linux nor is it based on it. Mac OS X was based off of NeXT OS that was recompiled by Steve Job and crew when he was booted from Apple years ago; later renamed Darwin by apple. NeXT was a branch of NetBSD UNIX from Berkley. There is more to it than that, but this gets you the general idea.
Linux on the other hand is was created by Linus Torvalds in Finland, though it is similar in some respect to BSD/UNIX, it is not the same.Testing

Holy crap people. 6 to one half a dozen to another. They're all unix based.
OSX is just as much Unix as Solaris is. -
First off I wanna thank you for your classy comments. Nice language.
So here's how it goes. I have every single right to bash Windows. I have owned every single offering up to Vista. Then I threw in the towel. DO YOU HAVE KIDS AND A WIFE? Do you have to fix there computers for them?
Whatever , I like all my Apple products. Just like polk products , some really love there stuff , SDA rules and all that , Are they sucking stuff 2?
This thread is dead.
I'm glad you liked it. Seemed the only way to drive the point home.
I could care less what you like. You have every right to **** about and love whatever you want, but that isn't the issue. The issue is you intentionally say things to get a reaction and act all bewildered when someone reacts.
I don't even know where you're going with your Polk analogy, but I'll take it and apply it better. If some Bose dong puffer came here saying how awesome Bose was and how much Polk sucks, what do you think the reaction would be?
It'd be great if you just loved your Apple stuff, but no...it's more than that. You gotta bag on everything else to piss people off. -

I like windows. I use a bunch of software for audio design that wouldn't work on MAC. Also when I build a machine I make a ghost. No more Fdisk reinstall do dah. Just pop in the disk and whammo I am running just like new with everything clean. If MAC was even close to PC price, and was actually truly compatible with Windows software I would consider running it. Stay away from **** and don't open every POC email forwarded by friends and family and you are OK. Vista was an embarrassment as is every other OS BG puts out. XP is solid, and 7 has been solid too. If everyone had Macs then the kids would write more viruses for them than PC's.
BenPlease. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
Thanks

Basically, yes, but I think the more correct term would be POSIX compliant.

One of the reason when I open up a Mac to troubleshoot it to for my computer illiterate friends, I do most of the time open up a terminal and run it from command line as I know my way around there.
