I consider myslef pretty open minded about alot of stuff, but 8 years old...and having the kid and family in the news like this will not make things any easier or more "normal". Almost sounds like a publicity stunt. I hope the child doesn't crawl into a hot air baloon and float away...

anyone consider that at the age of 4, children live off instinct and not "knowledge?" Going off instict alone, this child thought "I am a girl." Clearly this isn't a coming out of the closet matter, this is a mess up of the genetic makeup of this child. But with a group of adults who grew up in a much different era, boys are boys and girls are girls. People cannot be **** or they are wrong. To me, if someone is **** or literally thinks they're a girl with boy parts, so be it. yeah it's odd as I don't understand it but that doesn't mean it's wrong. It means my thinking is wrong. Guess what, some people hate tomatoes and others hate cilantro. What you like and don't like or feel and don't feel doesn't mean something is wrong or not. It just goes against someone else's opinions. Get over it; it's not your life to live.

Now I'm not saying the typical parents of today are anywhere near as good as the parents from 20 years ago but society has become a big stinky va-jay-jay about too many subject. But that is a different soap box.

Some people are transgendered. These people are usually never happy until they change sex, regardless of whether or not an operation is involved. This is the kind of thing that generally shows up very early in development, because it really is a case of some odd genetics -- not puberty or sexual development. If this was a severe case I think the parent's decision was fine.

I've thought about not chiming in my opinion so I won't. But I do have a friend that I worked closely with for 4 years go about the same inner conflict and she stated that she knew from the time that she can remember. It is a terrible struggle every day according to her (him) to deal with those feeling. Whether or not an 8 year old is capable of that type of thinking is not for me to decide.

Also, for what it's worth, this type of thing is not nearly as taboo in other countries / cultures as it is here in the US. Not saying that other societies accept it, but there is much more tolerance.

So tolerance is preached so much in society today.
How about what is right and wrong? Let him grow up and figure it out. 8 is way too young to know what is going on.

The fact that she has known since such a young age that she was a girl, before she learns about society's rights and wrongs proves that she knows something isn't right with her body.

And who are we to say it's wrong? Just cause some don't agree with it doesn't make it wrong.

    Ben,
Not saying I agree or disagree with your view here. However, what you consider right and wrong can be drastically different with what I / other people consider right or wrong. The point here, IMHO, is to tolerate the choices of others and accept that they are doing what they FEEL is the best for THEM, especially when they do not directly effect you. If it was my daughter, I can assure you that I would want every possible piece of information before making a decision - something that we cannot know occurred by reading a newspaper article. Would I support her decision? I would like to think not at that age, but every time we go to Target I end up spending 20 bucks on a toy that I swore I wouldn't get when we walked in.:D

I have a cousin (male) about my age who when we were growing up was "different". Always just a little feminine. He had a 2 years younger brother who was very "normal". By the time he was 20 he was a transvestite and made a living as a female impersonator. His mother and father totally rejected him. His brother did not. He has had serious emotional and phycological problems since coming out to his parents. I honestly think the rejection made his situation far worse than if they had chosen to love him regardless. Anyway, even at eight years old I knew he was very "girlish" and was not surprised when he chose the lifestyle he did. I honestly believe some people may be born with the "wrong" parts. Even though it makes me uncomfortable I can not pass judgement on this girl/boys parents when they obviously love and accept the way they do.

It didn't take long for the buzz words "tolerance" and "acceptance" to get bandied about in several posts, as if to say the child is being looked down upon by anyone who doesn't agree with the choices made by these parents.

I don't know if any of you who think this is right have kids, or at least nieces and nephews, but it might help in understanding that the choices these parents are making for this child have life long implications that they don't really have any business making. I'm about as strong an advocate for parental rights as you can be, but this does not fall into that category by any stretch of the imagination.

If they want to pretend their boy is a girl, I wouldn't agree with it, but it would be a lot better than changing this boy hormonally into a girl. They can raise this child without shaming him or making him feel like he's a freak.

If this child grows up to be an adult and decides he wants to be a woman rather than a man, so be it. It's not a decision a child should be making and it's certainly not a decision that should be made by the parents either.

Look on the bright side. When the child becomes an adult, the medical history could lead to a lucrative career in "adult entertainment"!

Urge, while I'm sure there are differing opinions amongst pediatricians and mental health care workers regarding treatment of transgender youth, I feel certain the parents have become educated advocates for their child. I'm sure they've had exhaustive counsel. Really, if the father is devastated over the loss of a child, don't you think he was dragged kicking and screaming to the point of agreeing to this treatment? And, how many homosexual or transgender people revert to heterosexual behaviour? I'd bet about none for homosexuals and even fewer for the hard-wired transgenders.

Isn't it best to allow the development of this girl to continue with female characteristics and identity, rather than attempt to re-wire her after society and her own confusion have had their way with her during her formative years?

I can't pretend to comment on behalf of the **** or transgendered community. There hasn't been a single comment that has led me to beleive that if any member here met this little girl, they wouldn't be tolerant or accepting, regardless of personal outlook on sexuality. I don't think that is ultimately the issue.
The issue comes down to the timing and age of making such a life altering change and at what age you are able to mentally and emotionally make choices about your physical person.

No, I get that... but legally speaking, when a boy becomes a girl, or vice versa, they can be called "he" and "she"...

And as much as we all have opinions about the right and wrong of sexual choice, I seriously doubt anyone who's posted, so far (I hope) would react violently toward what you so kindly refer to as "it".

And that's where a majority of the problem lies.
If my son came to me and said, "Papa... I think I'm a girl."
Well, I think I'd have a long talk with him. Things that are out of our control simply are. And while I would remain as unashamed as the father of a son, a male, a little guy born with a **** that plays with footballs and robots and laser guns... I would urge him to remain himself, whole, as a boy until he was old enough to legally make descisions on his own.

These aren't conversations that you can have with a typical 8 year old, though. When was the last time you could carry on a conversation as deep an meaningful as it sometimes needs to be with a child? And if a child cannot understand what society is and politics and things like romantic love, and unabashed hate... How can they really understand what it is to change a gender? I'm afraid that they can't. Not at 8.

The parents may think they are doing their child a favor. Hell, maybe they are. But I'm going to venture down the path that I wouldn't let my son (who isn't 8 yet) be responsible for choosing his own bedtime, nonetheless his own gender-role.

    My opinion only.
