Since a couple have been mentioned, what does everyone shoot?

Oneida Eagle compound, and while I have a couple choices I always reach for the .270 Win. for gun season.

Just last weekend I was hunting mule deer and blacktails in the sage and pines of the eastern Washington hills. Didn't get any. It's buck only and 3 point minimum (that's counted on one side only for you easterners).

The best part of it is getting outdoors in the wide open spaces during the day and drinking scotch around a huge fire at night. Having a trailer to sleep in helps too!

Hunting is almost required in Wyoming. I took my 10 year old with me on an antelope hunt this year and we got a respectable buck. Some friends and I just got back from hunting deer and elk but the weather was too warm. (Great camping weather though!) I hope I'll have time to try again in November or December.

I find it funny how people think it's just dandy to raise an animal in bad conditions just for food. Also I think to many people are effected by the chemicals used in raising the food for slaughter. I won't eat veal. The thought of how it is raised disturbs me. I guess to some ignoramuses leading the food to slaughter is so much more sporting than letting them live out and the wild and harvesting a few here and there. Also if these people that think that way live in the country they should donate their homes, and property to the animals and move back into the city.

    BTW SJ nice prong horn:)

Thanks for pressing your choice of food on the rest of us. What percentage of the US population is vegetarian? That's right next to none yet they have very big mouths and like to insult and call names. Sorry you don't like being a "man" off yourself and feed yourself to say a mountain lion, or a bear. Do this in the winter when they are very hungry and the food supply is limited.

That is just not true! There are many documented cases of most spices of higher mammals killing for apparently no other reason then entertainment (sport).
I had been for a long time conflicted about taking part in hunting. But after reading Michael Pollan's "The omnivore's dilemma," affirmed the ritual I take part in. And for me, it is a ritual. I connect with my food in a way that someone who has never killed their own meal can understand, but should!
I for one don't hunt for "sport." I use as much of the animal as possible. I choose to only hunt with bow and muzzle loader/black powder (one shot). And I also choose to not hunt for trophies, letting the best of the stock breed on (this also fills our role in the food chain in culling the heard, as it would be).
