...Unions served a very real purpose in this country at one time. They were instrumental in improving working conditions and raising standards of living, but by nature they a socialist/communist tool for disrupting commerce and the American economy. When was the last time a union said ok to taking a pay cut to save jobs? Instead they say no thanks, a factory closes down and the jobs go elsewhere.

I like the Reagan school of contract negotiation. This country was in the midst of a nasty recession when PATCO, the union representing air traffic controllers went on strike for more money. Ronald Reagan gave them 48 hours to return to their jobs, or they would be fired and forever banned from working in the field again. At that time many of these guys were making more than 50k a year, when the average U.S. worker made less that 18k. They chose to not return, and the union was crushed in one shot. If business and government would follow Reagan's example, we would be much better off.

The role of Unions today is to serve their own agenda(socialism) rather than protecting jobs or the workers that need them.

The Olympics themselves have become a political event. These events usually cost the taxpayers a lot of money. I personally would rather not have them in the US. Let the other countries foot the bill.

Obviously, you don't know too much about Chicago. What happens elsewhere means diddly squat when it comes to this town.

Can't say as I do know a lot about Chicago, but one thing you could have bet the farm on: if it were held in Chicago, Aramark would have been there.

You get Aramark because you'll get Sysco.

We probably could have won it, if someone hadn't spent the past 9 months apologizing for us, and basically telling the whole world what a rotten place this is:rolleyes:

I think the Olympics should be held in one city (Athens comes to mind) every 4 years. Just like they were in ancient times. All participating nations can help to build and maintain the venues and infrastructure to support them. My 2 cents.

And an excellent .02 cents I might add. Certainty takes the political grandstanding out & gives the venue back to the masses. Plus, we can watch it on NBC in Digital surround.

Some comments here are not so far off, regardless of your politics. I am a union guy,for a long time, but when the union does stuff that is wrong,I'll be the first to admit it. They did have a place in society, still do,but their role has grown way past their purpose due to corruption and greed. Can I say this to union officials ? Hell no,not if I ever want to work again. See,when the union holds the power, they control your life, how much you make, when you work, how often you'll work, etc. In exchange for giving up that control, they offer you certain benefits, very good ones at that, that you and mostly your employer will pay. Sound familiar ? Sound like the current HC plan running around in congress ? If you disagree with them or challenge them on anything, suddenly your not working....hmmm,also sounds familiar. Once you've given up certain freedoms in exchange for a job or HC,you have given control over your life to someone else. For me,thats like someone saying your too stupid to find a job,or run your own life,so we will do it for you. Am I wrong in this assumption ? I don't think so. Looks like our government wants a gigantic union for HC. I sound pretty anti-union,don't I ? Maybe I am in my wiser old age,who knows. One thing is for sure though, the power over your own self must remain with you, regardless of the carrot waived infront of you. Ok,off the soap box, enough ramblings for a sunday morning.

Just for ****,the wife and I went to see Robin Williams last night, funny as all hell, catch his show if you get a chance.

Why? Because this Forum has such Liberal leanings? If anything, I would expect more high fives and **** slaps.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Most liberals are getting so far to the left that they're starting to come back around to the right!

Those of use solidly in the middle sure hope the far left and far right all move to France and help out that wonderful country.

+1. There's surprisingly little difference between the far left and far right. Their ideals may be at odds but the end result seems to be the same.

It must go with the job, since now Obama seems to be getting the blame for all those things too. At least you get to live in a nice house for a few years ... and the owner changes the drapes for you before you move in!

IMO, thats the problem. "The lesser of 2 evils" argument is still evil. And this is the argument the 2 party system doesn't mind. Every four years or so, people get "angry", but never realize the root cause problems, and the majorities in governement shift. And nothing gets accomplished. Vote 3rd party or independent....
