With the economic crisis in IL, why would they want to spend that much money. With Chicago politics I would worry were would the money really go.

Good Lord, NJ, it seems like you have been on a crusade to inject politics into almost every other thread recently, and that's when you're not actually starting threads on the topic. Do you feel like you need a hug, or something (not from me, I hasten to add ...)?

Just listen to your new gear some more and relax. Forget about Obama, or at least, leave him out of your posts on CP!

I'm actually very disappointed that Chicago did not win. I think it could have done a lot for the "feel good" factor in the U.S., helping to boost the local economy and the national mood. Boosting the U.S. economy usually boosts the World economy too, IMO.

It's not all that surprising, though, I suppose, since the games have never been to S.A. yet.

To the tune of trillions and trillions. Soon we will be harking back to the good ole Carter days when things were better.

I don't mean political! I mean economically- We've been broke and under red ink for so long that we need to borrow quite a large amount from China again if we win. Of coz, I was excited to win but our pockets said otherwise.

Leave Politics out of the pictures!

No politics intended. The Presidential election was indeed historic, but my comments were meant to be entirely sarcastic in nature. And no hug required as I get more than enough at home.;) Personally I would have liked the games as well, and regardless of their impact, at the very least the imediate boost in jobs, particularily in construction wound have been a huge boost for Illinois/Indiana. I am sorry that money will be spent elsewhere.

    Thank you H9!

Actually, I did not like this part in that article:
... Madrid’s surprising success in reaching the final round came after former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch made an unusual appeal for the Spanish capital, reminding the IOC members as he asked for their vote that, at age 89, “I am very near the end of my time.” ...

What? So being a old former IOC President can be a reason for selecting your native country? Spain is a terrific country, and Madrid is a wonderful place for the Olympics, but not for this reason ... and they've already had the Barcelona Olympics as recently as 1992.

As for the U.S. well, there was this comment in the article:
... The European-dominated IOC’s last two experiences in the United States were marred by controversy: the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics were sullied by a bribery scandal and logistical problems and a bombing hit the 1996 Games in Atlanta. ...

I still think the U.S. is more capable of making a huge event like this more successful for the whole World (not just the U.S.) than just about any other country. It really could have helped a lot more than just Chicago or just the U.S.A. IMO.

There has not been a Summer Olympics that has been a profitable venture for any city in quite some time. IIRC the LA Olympics were successful due to a lot of corporate donations/investment. I don't see that happening any time in the near future in the US. I know 2016 is a long time away (actually not THAT long) but investment in infrasturcture would need to start soon and I would much rather see that type of funding go to improve roads, bridges, National Parks/monuments etc... IE: long term investment in stuff for everyone rather that sports venues that don't lend themselves well to other activities for a single city.

I for one am not crushed that we didn't get it. It would have been nice...but not necessary...and we are probably better off in the long run. Of course this is JMO.

I think some it comes down to the need to play politics within the IOC and their influencers, and that would be true politics, versus the Chicago style of politics. I also don't think the Chicago team did that good of job of making their case locally, or nationally. It's just sad that money that could of made some small differences locally was spent on a less than well-planned and implemented bid for the Olympics. JMHO.

I wonder how many of you people have been to the Olympics. I have been lucky to go to the Montreal and Lake Placid Olympics and will never forget the experience. And yes the tickets and lodging were expensive but worth it. It's so rare to have an international experience in the US.

It's sad that we didn't get to have the Olympics here in the US.

I think any money that would have been spent on Olympics can go to teaching English to people. Holy crap, this looks like something translated through Babelfish or something.

I am glad we did not get it. No matter what side of politics you are on we have too many problems at home to deal with. Adding the Olympics to them won't help at all.

I'd rather watch the X-Games at this point. All the BS over swimming suits, doping athletes, female runners that aren't really female, pot smoking athletes, corruption and so on and so forth. The X-Games are way more interesting, much more accessible and there isn't an international bias against any one country. It's about as level of a playing field as you can get in today's world.

And yes, I've been to the X-Games. I was at the very first one and supported them throughout college. Mainly because the X-Games promoters gave use free tickets in college. But once that was not available to me, I still went and stood in sweltering parking lots in Philly to watch all kinds of neat stuff. And yes, it was just as international as the Olympics but without all the snobbery. I met people from all over Europe, Russia, Australia/New Zealand, Asia and even Iceland and Greenland. Yeah, the X-Games are alot of fun!

I disagree. Just a few short days/hour ago, some "news" websites were speculating that U.S. officials were tipped off that Chicago would win, and Obama was only going for political gain, since he already knew the decision of the judges. That obviously wasn't true at this point.

You can certainly argue whether or not hosting the Olympic Games is a good thing for the host country, or not, but it should totally be possible to discuss a sports event without adding politics, especially inflamatory political statements.

As far as the wisdom of sending the President, perhaps Tony Blair set the tone when his intervention was credited with winning the games for London, when Paris was thought to be the favorite (but it was always thought to be a very close race IIRC).

The Olympics are so much more than a sporting event.
Research Politics and the Olympics. 1936 was a classic.
Just google what Michelle Malkin has to say about the situation.
    Research Valerie Jarrett.
People seem to be very naive about what is going on in this great country.
The USA is not Great Britain or France or Brazil any other country. It is the greatest country in the world. It has a Constitution. I wonder if any one reads it any more.
